Ex Chelsea defender Glen Johnson spoke to Squawka on Cole Palmers recent performances, calling him “the real deal”.

Johnson praised Palmer for his mentality “stepping up for penalties” and praised his performance against his former club Manchester City, where he scored a penalty in the 95th minute to equalise for Chelsea.

He then went on to speak about how calm he looks on the ball, before calling him “the real deal”. Chelsea fans would definitely agree, as he has become a key figure very quickly for the Blues this season.

Palmer has made 12 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions since joining the club, scoring four goals and providing four assists.

Chelsea currently sit 10th in the Premier League on 16 points, winning four, drawing four and losing four of their opening 12 games.

After a rocky start to the campaign with losses against West Ham, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa, Chelsea have managed to turn things around in recent weeks, beating Tottenham 4-1 and drawing 4-4 with league leaders Manchester City, as things are finally starting to click for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

England only managed a draw in their final game of EURO Qualifying, in a 1-1 draw with North Macedonia.

The attack for England was very flat on the day, struggling to create clear cut opportunities, and going behind in the first half, they managed to fight back and get a draw, but overall the performance wasn’t good enough from Gareth Southgate’s men.

Read on for our England player ratings, and who stood out for the Three Lions…

Jordan Pickford – 7 – Made two saves, including saving a penalty but the rebound was scored, not much else he could do.

Rico Lewis – 7 – Very unfortunate to give the penalty away, other than that thought he made a good account, making two tackles, making one key pass and completing 59/59 passes.

Harry Maguire – 6 – Completed five of his eleven long balls, and only had a pass completion of 84%, however he did win 5/6 aerial duels.

Marc Guehi – 6 – Made one tackle, won 2/3 ground duels and made two of his three long balls, but only won 1/5 aerial duels.

Kyle Walker – 7 – Recovered well when needed for England, making two interceptions, one tackle and one block, he also went forwards well, made one key pass, and completed both of his long balls attempted.

Declan Rice – 7.5 – Solid in the middle for England, made one key pass and kept it simple with a 96% pass accuracy. Also won 4/6 ground duels and made four tackles.

Trent Alexander-Arnold – 6 – Wasn’t at his best, only made one key pass and that is what he is in there for. Failed all three of his long ball attempts and only completed one of his five crosses.

Phil Foden – 7.5 – Was very involved, and looked the most dangerous for England going forward. Drifting around picking up the ball, completed two key passes, created one big chance and completed two of his three dribble attempts.

Jack Grealish – 7 – Was nice and direct when he got the ball on the flank, made two key passes and completed seven of his eight dribbles. Marginally offside for his goal which was correctly ruled out.

Ollie Watkins – 5 – Barely got involved in the game, only played 58 minutes and only managed 10 touches.

Bukayo Saka – 6 – Did make two key passes, but could’ve done more on that right hand side. Nearly had an assist for Grealish’s disallowed goal, but did fail both of his other cross attempts, and only completed one successful dribble out of three.

Subs: Harry Kane 7, Cole Palmer N/A, Marcus Rashford N/A, Kalvin Phillips N/A.

England have beaten Malta 2-0, on rather flat evening for the Three Lions. However an own goal and a Harry Kane goal earnt England a victory and three points.

Rice had one chalked off, which would have made it 3-0 England, but that would have been a rather flattering scoreline for the performance from the Three Lions.

Read on for our England player ratings, and who stood out for the Three Lions…

Jordan Pickford – 6 – Didn’t have to make a save, and only made the one punch, made 41/41 passes but was un tested so can’t be rated higher.

Fikayo Tomori – 6 – Taken off at half time, played in a slightly unfamiliar left back role, becoming a back three in possession. Made two tackles and completed four out five long balls.

Harry Maguire – 6.5 – Kept a clean sheet of course, and made two clearances and one block. Also completed 10/10 long balls, and won 7/7 aerial duels.

Marc Guehi – 6 – Not to much to do, made two interceptions and made 103/106 accurate passes, with 7/8 long balls.

Kieran Trippier – 6 – Managed two tackles, one clearance and one interception at right back, also making one key pass and completing 5/5 long balls.

Conor Gallagher – 5 – Subbed at half time to bring on the more attacking Bukayo Saka, worked hard and won some duels in midfield, however was a little sloppy in possession on a few occasions.

Jordan Henderson – 5 – Subbed after 61 minutes, played 2/2 long balls and won 2/4 ground duels. Didn’t offer enough in the middle of the park when playing out.

Trent Alexander-Arnold – 7 – Could have created more but did get forward in central midfield, getting four shots off (two on target) and making one key pass.

Marcus Rashford – 5 – Subbed after 61 minutes, struggled to get himself in the game, had one shot which was blocked and only completed 2/6 of his dribbles.

Harry Kane – 7.5 – Scored the goal to give England a 2-0 lead, and allow them breathing room. However wasn’t as involved as he could have been, only having 34 touches.

Phil Foden – 8 – Tried to make things happen whenever he got the ball, made three key passes, completed 4/4 dribbles and looked the most dangerous player on the pitch.

Subs: Bukayo Saka 7, Kyle Walker 6 , Cole Palmer 6 , Declan Rice 6

Cole Palmer has entered the pitch for England against Malta in the 61st minute for his senior England debut, having worked his way through the youth age groups to earn his spot.

Having played for the Under-15s, Under-16s, Under-17s, Under-18s, and the Under-21s, Palmer has been given his England debut by Gareth Southgate on his first call up, replacing Marcus Rashford against Malta.

The 21-year-old has been a fan favourite at Chelsea since joining from Manchester City in the summer, earning this call up after several England drop outs through injury.

Palmer has hit the ground running at Chelsea this campaign, making 12 appearances, scoring four goals and providing four assists.

He also scored two goals for Manchester City before making the move to Chelsea at the start of the season, scoring in the UEFA Super Cup to win City the game, and scoring in the Community Shield against Arsenal.

Palmer has made 15 appearances for England Under-21s, scoring five goals and being part of the winning UEFA European Under-21 Championship team in 2023.

This international break has given Palmer the chance to impress England boss Southgate, and attempt to force his way into the managers thinking ahead of EURO 2024.

Cole Palmer is not a fan of London’s congestion.

Speaking to reporters while away on international duty with England, Palmer, 20, who left Manchester City and joined Chelsea in the summer, said he is loving life in the country’s capital, but did admit he gets frustrated by the amount of traffic on the roads.

“The most annoying thing [about playing in London]? – The traffic,” the 20-year-old said.

“That’s the biggest thing for me, but everything else? – I am enjoying it, to be fair.”

After being called up for the first time, the Chelsea midfielder is in line to make his senior international debut when England play Malta on Friday night. The Three Lions’ second game of the current break is scheduled to be against North Macedonia next Monday.

This weekend sees another round of international matches, and with Chelsea’s Cole Palmer called up to the senior England squad by Gareth Southgate, the youngster is dreaming of making his debut.

Palmer has been in fine form for the Blues having made the difficult decision to leave Man City, a team whom he denied all three points at the weekend thanks to his coolly taken injury-time penalty which saw the Super Sunday match end 4-4.

During his press conference ahead of the Malta match on Friday, he sat down to speak to the media who asked him immediately how his Man City supporting mates were with him because of that late goal.

“Just mixed messages,” he said. “When I scored on Sunday the majority of them were happy for me.”

Growing up it seems that the 21-year-old had always dreamed of wearing the Three Lions at major tournaments and otherwise, though it was hard for him to visualise the dream coming true.

Cole Palmer in action
“I just thought it was a long way away when I was that age,” he added. “Obviously now I’m here I have thought about what if I do make my debut. It’s going to be an amazing moment for me and my family if it does happen. If it doesn’t happen, I’m just happy to be here and called up.”

Asked who his playing heroes were growing up, Palmer had no hesitation in naming three titans of the game: “Rooney, Ronaldo and Messi,” was the briefest of responses, and he’d surely be delighted with the international careers of any one of the three.

Man City have a hugely talented squad and that’s arguably the reason why Palmer decided to move on. With so many new players at Chelsea over the summer, he’d have been forgiven for thinking he’d gone from out of the frying pan into the fire.

He backed himself to succeed however.

“I looked at the squad and thought if I go there and show what I can do, I’ve got a chance of playing and thankfully it’s happened,” he noted.

“I think I’m a player that always wants the ball so I can help the team get out of difficult situations, create a chance…”

His former manager, Pep Guardiola, clearly harboured no hard feelings. “He just said congratulations and hope I’m enjoying it,” Palmer said.

A player that also made the trip from the Etihad Stadium to Stamford Bridge was Raheem Sterling, and though he’s not been called up on this occasion, he’s clearly been an influence on Palmer.

“When I was coming through at City, he just helped me a lot, told me bits of advice and stuff. When I went to Chelsea I spoke to him,” Palmer noted.

Chelsea’s Cole Palmer and Man City’s Rico Lewis are already fitting in amongst the England squad as the youngsters took part in an impressive rondo in training.

The Man City graduates were called up by Gareth Southgate for the Three Lions’ EURO 2024 qualifying matches with Malta and North Macedonia over the next few days as they have made impressive starts to their seasons.

The England manager will want to get a closer look at the two players during this international break and they showed that being coached by Pep Guardiola has paid off as they did not look out of place in a rondo.

In Garth Crooks BBC Team of the Week, we saw Cole Palmer feature after his performance against his former side, two Everton players for their win against Palace, and two Liverpool players after their 3-0 win against Brentford.

Palmer was included in Crooks Team of the Week, after his penalty rescued Chelsea a deserved point against his former side Manchester City.

Meanwhile the two Liverpool players included were from either end of the pitch, with Alisson taking the spot in net, and Mohamed Salah in the front three following his brace against Brentford.

Other inclusions were the likes of Dominic Solanke who scored a brace for Bournemouth in their big 2-0 win against Newcastle.

Soucek who scored a late winner for the Hammers against Nottingham Forest to win 3-2 at the London Stadium.

Two Everton players in Vitaliy Mykolenko and Abdoulaye Doucoure for their performances against Crystal Palace in a 3-2 victory for the Toffees.

Arsenal’s William Saliba and Manchester United’s Victor Lindelof both got on the score sheet for their sides, and managed victories to earn their spots in defence.

Whilst the midfield is completed with Pablo Sarabia of Wolves, and John McGinn of Aston Villa, both of which were on the scoresheet for their sides in victories against Tottenham and Fulham.

talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan has outlined why Cole Palmer deserved his England call up, and how he has excelled since joining Chelsea.

Jordan said Palmer deserves to be called up to the England senior squad, on the basis of “what Gareth Southgate supposedly selects on” regarding to form.

He went on to say if Palmer continues to have a full season performing how he currently is, it will be a good move from Southgate getting him in the mix early, ready for decisions on the EURO 2024 squad.

Since joining Chelsea from Manchester City, Palmer has made 11 appearances for the Blues, scoring four goals, and providing four assists.

He has taken the responsibility as Chelsea’s penalty taker in recent weeks, with all of his four goals coming from the spot in the Premier League, against the likes of Burnley, Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City.

Since earning his first start for Chelsea in the Carabao Cup against Brighton, Palmer has kept his spot, starting every game since. Pochettino clearly likes him and trusts him despite only being 21-years-old and being in his second proper season as a senior first team player.

In the 2022/23 campaign for Manchester City, Palmer made 25 appearances, scoring one goal and providing one assist, however many of these appearances were from the bench and he only totalled 850 minutes over those 25 games.
