Mikel Arteta has confirmed that goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale will start for Arsenal against Brentford on Saturday, months after playing his last Premier League match.

The 25-year-old was a key member of the Gunners’ squad last season as the North London club challenged for the league title with Man City.

However, this season has seen the England goalkeeper drop to the bench following the arrival of David Raya from Brentford on loan.

The Spanish goalkeeper is unable to face his parent club on Saturday, therefore, that allows Ramsdale to step back between the sticks in a league match. Sky Sports reports that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has confirmed the 25-year-old will start the match and it would have been a huge worry if that was not the case.

Aaron Ramsdale will start for Arsenal on Saturday

Ramsdale has not started a Premier League match since Arsenal defeated Man United 3-1 at the start of September and it will only be his fourth appearance in the competition this season.

This is a huge chance for the goalkeeper to show what he is made of and it could possibly make or break his Arsenal career.

With just a few weeks until the opening of the January transfer window, Arsenal custodian, Aaron Ramsdale, needs to find a backbone and give Mikel Arteta a taste of his own medicine.

The England international has been treated appallingly by his manager, with Arteta’s suggestion that David Raya was being brought in as competition rather than as the new number one, per the official Arsenal website, already shown to be an out and out lie.

The former Brentford stopper was obviously brought to the club with the clear intention of being their main man in goal and the sooner that Ramsdale understands that the better.

France 24 also noted Arteta’s words as he attempts to keep hold of Ramsdale beyond January.

“We will always try to do our best to help them, but this is a team sport that needs 24 players that have to fulfil a role. And the role that you have in August, it might be very different from the one you have in March,” he said.

“So making early decisions, in my experience, is not something good at all and as well because the team has certain needs that have to be accomplished. And in order to do that you cannot do it with six, 10 or 14 players. It is impossible. So you need everyone and Aaron has a really important role in the team.”

No amount of guilt tripping should stop Ramsdale from essentially sticking two fingers up at Arteta and getting himself a No.1 position elsewhere in order that not only is he playing regular football again, but that he has a genuine chance to be part of Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad.

‘Looking after number one’ has never been a more accurate phrase. Ramsdale owes Arsenal nothing and he certainly doesn’t owe Arteta anything either.

It’s accepted that teams evolve and manager’s want different things, that’s always been part of football, but to go about things in such an underhand manner reflects incredibly badly on the club and its manager.

Ramsdale can do better than being a pawn in Arteta’s game.

talkSPORT pundit Gabby Agbonlahor has spoken on the opportunity for Newcastle to swoop for Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips and Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale in January.

Agbonlahor believes Newcastle will look at Phillips in January, saying Ruben Neves would be a good player for them, but Phillips would “make sense”.

They then went on to speak on Aaron Ramsdale who is currently being kept out of the Arsenal team by David Raya, and Agbonlahor believes he would also be a good addition for Newcastle.

Agbonlahor made the point that all the top clubs have a goalkeeper that can play out from the back, but he believes Nick Pope is a “top shot stopper but can’t play with his feet”.

Phillips has only made eight appearances for Manchester City this campaign, only totalling 215 minutes of football across those eight games.

Meanwhile Ramsdale has also struggled for minutes since the arrival of Raya in the summer, making seven appearances for the Gunners this campaign, keeping two clean sheets and totalling 630 minutes of football.

With both of these players struggling for minutes this season, the opportunity could be there for clubs to come knocking in January, whether that be Newcastle or another club.

Aaron Ramsdale is set to start for the Gunners in the Premier League for the first time since the September international break this weekend.

The English goalkeeper was quickly pushed out of the starting eleven after the signing of David Raya in the summer.

The Spaniard arrived on loan from Brentford but due to the Premier League rules, he is not eligible to play against his former side on Saturday evening.

This has opened the door ever so slightly for Ramsdale to try and impress Mikel Arteta with former goalkeeping legend, David Seaman, stating that he needs to consistently play to be in contention for England.

“If he’s not playing [for Arsenal], it’s going to affect his [England] chances,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Aaron Ramsdale after conceding against West Ham

“Going into next summer, where Aaron is really pushing to become England goalkeeper – he needs to be playing.

“Aaron’s too good to be a number two, that is for sure.”

The 25-year-old’s last start for the Gunners came in his side’s 3-1 loss to West Ham in the Carabao Cup last month.

Although Arteta has spoken about rotating goalkeepers, he has yet to back this up with action as speculation grows over a potential January move for Ramsdale.

Thoughts on those Aaron Ramsdale comments and updates on other Arsenal targets

Comments made by Aaron Ramsdale’s father on the Highbury Squad podcast have attracted a lot of attention. Nick Ramsdale made it clear his son has lost his smile since being replaced with David Raya by Mikel Arteta, but I think this is a normal response from the player’s father – it’s not his agent, it’s not something that points towards any negotiations or efforts to leave Arsenal.

He obviously wants to see Aaron happy but right now it’s a difficult moment. Still, my understanding remains the same as earlier this week – Ramsdale wants to fight for his place at Arsenal, at the moment there are no negotiations with any other club – also because the goalkeepers market is very quiet, with big goalkeeper moves often relying on a domino effect which is not as active in the middle of the season.

Elsewhere with Arsenal, we’re seeing some surprise links with a loan move for Ruben Neves at Al Hilal. He’s mainly been linked with Newcastle, who appreciate the player, but there is also historical interest from Mikel Arteta – he has always liked Neves, but there are no negotiations at the moment.

Some of you have also been asking me about other Arsenal transfer rumours we’ve seen – Julian Brandt has been linked again and I’m aware that they had some interest in him two years ago, but I’ve heard nothing since then. Ferdi Kadioglu is another name doing the rounds, but again I’m afraid I’m not aware of anything concrete happening there, even if he’s a very good talent who looks ready for important clubs.

Strange situation surrounding Nico Williams

We saw some interesting words from the agent of Nico Williams. The Athletic Bilbao star is one of the most talented wingers around Europe with his pace and his ability to score and assist, and we’ve unsurprisingly seen him linked with some big clubs because I think he’s a really underrated talent with big potential.

So what’s the situation? His agent Felix Tainta has made it clear that his client doesn’t want to leave on a free transfer, but at the moment they are yet to receive a contract proposal from Athletic Bilbao.

Williams himself has also spoken about his situation, and said that if you’re being linked with clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona then it means you’re doing something right, but he wants to continue with his current club. It’s important to mention two things, though, because from what I’m hearing Real Madrid and Barcelona have sent their scouts to follow the player, but as of yet no one has sent a formal proposal – they know his priority is to stay at Athletic, so let’s see what happens there.

Chelsea also had Williams on their list in the summer – their priority target was Cole Palmer, but when he was not yet available and not yet given the green light from Manchester City, Williams was one of the players they secretly considered at the club. Then nothing happened because Chelsea wanted to go for Palmer and they are very happy.

Aston Villa could be another name to watch – Unai Emery would love to have him, but in the summer it was impossible to make it happen. Let’s see if his contract situation means it’s a different story next summer, but it is important to remember that he doesn’t want to betray Athletic by leaving on a free. So it’s up to the club and their proposal now.

Joao Neves scouted by Manchester United and other top clubs

Benfica are always producing talents and Joao Neves is another one – born in 2004, the midfielder is doing fantastic for them right now, particularly against Sporting Lisbon in their last game. He’s already a crucial player for them and a top talent, and we’ve seen him linked with top clubs in recent months.

What I can mention today is that Manchester United sent their scouts to watch Neves in the game against Sporting. They want to keep an eye on his progress and development, so this could be one to watch for the future. Many clubs are keeping an eye on him, but I can confirm that Man United are one of them.

What will happen next will depend on several factors like the ownership, the manager, the directors who are likely to change in the next weeks with Sir Jim Ratcliffe incoming … many changes are likely at United, but the scouting department are keeping a close eye on Neves.

Staying with Man United, I’ve had some fans asking me about reports linking them with an interest in a winger and a right-back this January, but that’s not the information I have. As I recently said, I’m told their priority for 2024 is a centre-back, and in my opinion they’re already well covered at right-back with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot.

In other news…

Walter Mazzarri – We’ve had a big change in Italian football and also one that could have an impact in the Champions League as Napoli have fired Rudi Garcia as manager and brought Walter Mazzarri back to the club. After ten years, and spells with clubs like Inter Milan and Watford, Mazzarri is back at Napoli in a role until the end of the season.

Samuel Iling-Junior – I’m aware there have been some links with Tottenham and Samuel Iling-Junior. My understanding is that there are many English clubs monitoring Samuel, but it’s just about scouting and nothing else so far. It will depend on Juventus’ decision and they’ve not made any internal decision on his future yet.

Jadon Sancho to Juventus exclusive update

I want to start today’s column with an exclusive update on the future of Jadon Sancho. As we know, the situation has been really complicated for the last two months – between Sancho and Manchester United, the people at the club, the coaching staff and obviously Erik ten Hag.

I can confirm again, as I’ve said in recent weeks, that Sancho is expected to leave Manchester United in the January transfer window – that’s the idea. There have been many rumours about clubs, but now I can tell you that Juventus made contact in recent days to be informed on the Sancho situation.

Juve appreciate the player and think he could be a good opportunity on the market, but because of their financial situation, the only way to make it happen is a loan deal. The salary is an important one, so Juventus would need United to cover part of that salary.

To be clear, at the moment it’s not even a negotiation, just Juventus asking for information on the situation Sancho, so let’s see what happens because for United the best thing to do is to wait and see if other clubs join the race. We’ve had many rumours about a return to Borussia Dortmund, and interest from Saudi clubs, and for United it makes sense to sell the player rather than loan him out. Still, in case they can’t do that, keep an eye on a loan deal and keep an eye on Juventus.

Juve director Cristiano Giuntoli was in London almost two weeks ago, and there have been rumours about players like Kalvin Phillips and Thomas Partey, but from what I understand these players are not a priority. Sancho, however, is an opportunity, and they’ve had initial conversations, but it will depend on United, on the salary coverage, and if they’re open to a loan deal or not.

From my perspective, I think Juventus would be a very good move for Sancho. They can offer space, new motivation, and a chance to fight for the title as they’re doing very well in Italy this season. Sancho certainly needs to leave and play regular football, so this looks a good option for him, but at the same time I think United will wait for permanent deal proposals, so that’s a potential issue.

Aaron Ramsdale’s exit a possibility, but Chelsea aren’t in for him

I think it’s a possibility that Aaron Ramsdale could leave Arsenal in January because he’s not playing, but it’s not something guaranteed at all. When I speak to my sources on this situation, I’m always told that the goalkeeper market is not easy at all, because it’s kind of a domino effect – at the moment we’re not seeing this kind of effect because clubs don’t tend to change their goalkeeper in the middle of the season.

At the moment the situation is really quiet, but perhaps things could change if there’s an injury somewhere or something like that. For sure Ramsdale wants to play more, but he’s also prepared to fight for his place at Arsenal in case he stays there. I can also guarantee that Ramsdale is not a target for Chelsea, and they’re not going to sign a goalkeeper in January, despite some speculation and links with Ramsdale.

The latest on Manchester United’s CB situation

As previously reported, the message on Raphael Varane remains very clear – it’s a tactical decision for him not to start games for Manchester United at the moment. Erik ten Hag is very happy with Harry Maguire at the moment, with how he’s playing, with his mentality, and also Jonny Evans has partnered him well.

Still, with Evans now injured I’m sure we’ll see Varane getting more playing time. It’s about rotation, though of course if they receive an important proposal in January the situation could change for Varane. At the moment I’m not aware of any negotiation, but if something happens it could be an open situation in January.

We know that in 2024 a top priority for United is a new centre-back, but whether it’ll be January or the summer will depend on opportunities. Many of the names I’ve mentioned on here multiple times like Edmond Tapsoba and Jean-Clair Todibo are important players for their clubs, so are unlikely to move in the middle of the season. If there are other opportunities, we will see, but otherwise it will be in the summer that we see an important defender targeted for United.

Santiago Gimenez to Tottenham or Chelsea?

Chelsea know the situation well, that Gimenez could be available for around €45m in January, but at the moment nothing concrete is ongoing, but I’ll keep you posted if the situation changes. It’s also important to say that Tottenham keep following the player, so that could be one to watch as it looks like Gimenez could be an important player on the market in the near future.

Also on Spurs, we know they have some injuries in defence at the moment, but they are not desperate to sign cover. It will depend on opportunities. They’ve been unlucky because they’ve had a lot of injuries at the same time, but I’m told they won’t panic because they know most of these players will be back at the end of December, so they’ll assess the situation then.

Overall, I don’t see Tottenham spending crazy money in January, that’s not the plan at the moment. They’re happy with the balance in the squad right now, but of course the recovery process of some key players will be important, so perhaps they could look for opportunities towards the end of the January window.

Alphonso Davies and Real Madrid’s transfer plans

Alphonso Davies to Real Madrid is a possibility. It’s worth remembering that his situation is quite special because he was very close to signing a new long-term deal at Bayern, it was almost done back in March/April, but then everything at Bayern changed – Julian Nagelsmann was out, as well as key members of the board such as Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic.

So with a new manager, new director and new CEO, Bayern had to re-start the conversations with Davies. From what I’m hearing at the moment the conversations have not been that positive, so there is a concrete chance for Bayern to sell the player in the summer, because he’s out of contract in 2025 and they don’t want to lose him on a free.

I don’t see anything happening in January, but in the summer it could be different, and for sure Real Madrid appreciate the player. They feel they need a new left-back, and so Davies is on Madrid’s list for the summer.

The private and public message is that Real Madrid won’t sign anyone in January. This is usually how they work – they don’t like to go for signings in the January window unless they really have to because of injuries and so on. They’re happy with their squad, so if the situation remains like this and they don’t have injuries then they won’t do anything in January.

Real Madrid are already planning for the summer – they want Davies, and also Endrick is on his way, so let’s see if they also have other targets for summer 2024.

Ruben Neves wants Premier League return amid Newcastle interest

Newcastle United are not optimistic about their chances of signing Ruben Neves, as it looks like it’s going to be really complicated. Of course I think it’s important to clarify the situation surrounding co-ownership of clubs, and hopefully that’s what this meeting on the 21st will do.

Still, we know Newcastle need a midfielder to cover for the suspended Sandro Tonali. They are still waiting to see what happens on the 21st and what clubs will decide, but they are looking on the midfielder market in any case, though it’s also still important for them to know if they’ll still be in the Champions League, or the Europa League, or even out of Europe altogether.

Newcastle will need to decide what kind of midfielder they want, and how much they’re ready to spend, but Kalvin Phillips could be another option for them. It’s not a negotiation as of today, but it could be an opportunity.

Neves remains a player they really appreciate, Eddie Howe is a big fan, and he has experience in the Premier League. They really like him, and Neves would be open to return to the Premier League, so let’s see what happens. At the moment all parties are waiting.

Transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano has had his say on the current situation involving Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale amid something of an outburst from the player’s father.

Speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside for his Daily Briefing column, Romano stated that Ramsdale’s father expressing concern for his son during a podcast is not necessarily something that points to any change in the player’s situation.

Ramsdale’s dad Nick admitted he’s seen his son lose his smile after losing his place to David Raya in the Gunners starting line up, and Romano has also said that this is a difficult moment for the England international.

Ramsdale was the clear first choice for Arsenal last season and mostly performed quite well, so some fans and pundits will have been surprised when Raya was signed on loan from Brentford, almost immediately overtaking Ramsdale as first choice.

Aaron Ramsdale is enduring a difficult time at Arsenal

Still, it seems Ramsdale remains determined to fight for his place at Arsenal, according to the latest information from Romano.

“I think this is a normal response from the player’s father – it’s not his agent, it’s not something that points towards any negotiations or efforts to leave Arsenal,” Romano explained.

“He obviously wants to see Aaron happy but right now it’s a difficult moment. Still, my understanding remains the same as earlier this week – Ramsdale wants to fight for his place at Arsenal, at the moment there are no negotiations with any other club.”

One imagines Ramsdale could be a starter for many other clubs in the Premier League and around Europe, but it could also be the case that he has it in him to win his place back from Raya.

Despite seeming to be the undisputed number one for now, Raya hasn’t always looked that convincing since coming into the team, so Ramsdale might do well to stay patient and wait for an opportunity to play regularly again.

The way that Aaron Ramsdale has been treated by Mikel Arteta at Arsenal hasn’t gone down at all well with the goalkeeper’s dad.

Nick Ramsdale joined former Arsenal striker, Kevin Campbell, and presenter, Sophie Nicolaou, to discuss a multitude of things that were Gunners related, with particular emphasis on how Aaron losing his place to David Raya had affected the entire family.

He had a fairly strong message to send to Arteta too:

“When I spoke to Mr Arteta on the phone before he signed Aaron, he said he wanted Aaron.

“But now, you know, David Raya’s back on the market and he’s had David Raya. Aaron is going to be the cup goalkeeper, and David Raya is going to be the main man unless something happens, an injury or a sending-off.

“Aaron’s got to live with that and he is living with that even though he’s not been told it. By anybody. You’ve got to give the guy a chance for God’s sake. Even though the way it’s been done, in my eyes, it’s been wrong and we can talk about that but it’s the decision.”

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale could be open to leaving the club in the January transfer window, according to Fabrizio Romano, speaking on the Debrief Podcast.

The Gunners signed David Raya on loan from Brentford during the summer and he’s quickly established himself as Mikel Arteta’s number one, leaving Ramsdale’s future in some doubt.

It now remains to be seen if the England international will stay put at the Emirates Stadium, with Romano now admitting he could be one to watch in January, as he wants to play more.

Still, the transfer news expert denied links with Chelsea, insisting that the Blues are not currently looking for a new signing in that position, which perhaps makes sense as they have Robert Sanchez, who they brought in from Brighton during the summer.

Aaron Ramsdale to leave Arsenal?

Ramsdale would surely be a tempting option for a number of big clubs, however, so it will be interesting to see what opportunities arise for him, and if Arsenal are ready to lose their backup ‘keeper.

When asked about Ramsdale by host Angus Scott, Romano said: “I think it’s a possibility because he’s not playing but it’s not guaranteed as well.

“It’s not easy … goalkeepers usually move when there’s a domino effect and at the moment we’re not seeing that effect, and in the January transfer window clubs are not usually changing their goalkeeper.

“Ramsdale wants to play more but from what I’m heard he’s also prepared to fight for his place. I can also guarantee that he’s not a target for Chelsea and they’re not going to sign a goalkeeper in January.”

Ever since David Raya joined Arsenal, Aaron Ramsdale has been cast aside by Mikel Arteta, however, it appears that the Gunners former number one will soon clarify his situation.

During his press conference ahead of Arsenal’s match this weekend against Burnley, Arteta warned the England international (per BBC) not to be too hasty regarding his career, perhaps hinting that all is not well with Ramsdale behind the scenes and he’s considering a move away.

With London rivals Chelsea having been heavily linked to the custodian in the past, there appears to have been a belief that Ramsdale will pitch up at Stamford Bridge and challenge Robert Sanchez for the keeper’s jersey.

Aaron Ramsdale training with England

‘Ramsdale is focused on Arsenal at the moment then in January he will discuss his situation with his camp, but at the moment there are no negotiations at all,’ CaughtOffside columnist, Fabrizio Romano, wrote in his exclusive Daily Briefing.

‘Also links with Chelsea are not true. I’m told they have no interest and are not looking at a new goalkeeper now.’

Given that Euro2024 is just over six months away, one can understand Ramsdale’s frustrations at not being able to play week in and week out for the Gunners.

Arteta’s very clever mind games could well ensure that the keeper doesn’t look elsewhere during the January transfer window.

However, if he still doesn’t get a look in at the Emirates Stadium before season’s end, he has no chance whatsoever of dislodging Jordan Pickford for the tournament, unless the Everton man gets injured.

Even then there’ll be no guarantee Gareth Southgate would pick Ramsdale if he’s not seen any significant match action.
