Shaw was crucial for ten Hag and Manchester United last season, making 47 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal, providing six assists, contributing to 20 clean sheets and totalling 3,643 minutes of football.

Not only did Shaw play as a left back last season, which is his natural position, but ten Hag also deployed him as a central defender at times last season, where many were impressed by his performances.

Manchester United duo withdrawn from international duty following injuries

Manchester United are facing additional injury setbacks as Rasmus Hojlund and Christian Eriksen have been withdrawn from the Denmark squad due to injuries, per Sky Sports.

Both players had to be substituted early in a 1-0 Premier League win over Luton at Old Trafford. Hojlund, the striker who was signed for £72 million in the summer, suffered a hamstring problem, while Eriksen sustained a knee injury during the match.

The injury woes for Manchester United are compounded by the absence of several first-team players, including Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia, Jonny Evans, and Amad Diallo due to injuries.

Additionally, Jadon Sancho is still excluded from the squad due to a disciplinary issue, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who had just returned from injury, missed the Saturday game due to illness.

And while both players have done a great job despite the pressures, fans know the importance of having an experienced head such as Shaw at the back. Ten Hag’s woes have also been made worse by Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s unavailability.

The former Crystal Palace defender is also ruled out through injury. His prognosis seems a little brighter than Shaw’s though.

Speaking to ManUtd about both full-backs ahead of Saturday’s league clash against Sheffield United, Ten Hag said: “Luke Shaw, I don’t expect him back in this block of games.

“For instance, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, I don’t think he’s too far away from returning into team training and so back in the team.”

United’s next five games include home and away Champions League group games against FC Copenhagen (24 Oct & 8 Nov), as well as games against Manchester City (29 Oct), Newcastle United (1 Nov) and Fulham (4 Nov).

As Man United ease towards a quarter of their Premier League season gone, it’s clear that they need to up their game massively if they want to be in contention at the top end of the table in a few months time.

Erik ten Hag’s side haven’t really got going in 2023/24, but they don’t want to allow the rot to set in.

There’s plenty of matches to be played over the coming months and one or two positive results is all that they need to bring the confidence flooding back.

The January transfer window is just around the corner of course, and with Sir Jim Ratcliffe likely to have a say in signings should his offer for 25% of the club be ratified in the coming days, it will be interesting to see which targets the club goes after.

Moreover, there’s the issue of whether Sir Jim’s idea of what makes a good signing for the club aligns with that of his manager.

In any event, Calciomercato have reported that both the Red Devils and Paris Saint-Germain are ready to do battle for Inter Milan’s €50m-rated left-back, Federico Dimarco.

Quite what that would mean longer-term for Luke Shaw isn’t clear, though it’s perfectly understandable why United might be running the rule over the 25-year-old Dimarco.

His marauding runs down Inter’s left and importance to them in their run to the Champions League final earned him a place in last season’s UEFA Champions League Team of the Season.

With a few days left of the current transfer window, there are surely plenty of last-minute deals that will be close to being agreed, though one Barcelona star won’t be getting what could be seen as a dream move to Man United.

The Red Devils have done most of their transfer business already, however, the injury to Luke Shaw has opened up the opportunity for a player to come in and make the left-back position at Old Trafford their own.

According to Fabrizio Romano, that is likely to be Chelsea star, Marc Cucurella, after the player agreed terms with United.

However, there still remains the significant issue of Man United getting the deal over the line with the Blues before Friday’s deadline.

Given that the Spaniard hasn’t formed part of Mauricio Pochettino’s plans in the opening few games of the 2023/24 Premier League season, it’s unlikely that any loan deal agreement would be a problem.

Even before the news of Cucurella’s impending switch became public knowledge, however, one former Chelsea star was apparently warned off of a move to Old Trafford.

According to Sport BILD’s Christian Falk, Barcelona manager, Xavi, has told Marcos Alonso that he isn’t allowed to leave the club for Man United.

Xavi clearly sees something in the player and wants to ensure he stays with the blaugranes, rather than taking his experience elsewhere and leaving the Catalans light in terms of strength in depth.

With only a few days left until the closure of the summer transfer window, any deals needing to be done have to be coming towards final agreement if they want to get over the line, and Chelsea appear more likely than most to be working right up until 11pm on Friday.

The Blues have had a spectacular if dramatic window again, breaking the British transfer record to bring in Moises Caicedo, signing other highly-rated stars such as Romeo Lavia, but selling more than a starting XI of players in order to balance the books for Financial Fair Play.

It would appear that there is still business to be done, and one deal in particular has come straight out of left field.

Marc Cucurella to Manchester United?

According to The Athletic (subscription required), Man United have enquired about taking Marc Cucurella on loan because of an injury to their first-choice left-back, Luke Shaw.

It’s thought that the England star could be out of action for a while, and the Spaniard is an attack-minded defender and should slot straight in to Erik ten Hag’s preferred set-up.

With a few days left, any agreement will have to be made quickly, with the player surely welcoming a move up north given that he hasn’t had a look in so far this season under Mauricio Pochettino.

Time will tell if both clubs can get this one over the line.

Despite finishing third in Erik ten Hag’s first season in charge, it’s clear that changes are still required if the club is to improve and put together a stronger title challenge next term, while they’ll also need to raise standards in a few areas if they are to avoid humiliation in the Champions League again as they have done on numerous occasions when they’ve been in the competition in recent years.

As per Fabrizio Romano in his exclusive column for CaughtOffside this morning, Mount has had his medical with Man Utd and an announcement shouldn’t be too far away now, with Ten Hag landing an ideal midfielder for his system.

In our line up below, Mount should play an advanced role in a midfield three, pairing up with Bruno Fernandes to provide support for the front players, while Casemiro should fulfil that defensive midfield role as usual…

Meanwhile, Romano also detailed in his Daily Briefing that the Red Devils have an interest in both Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana and Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund.

Neither deal is advanced at the moment, with Hojlund looking too expensive, while David de Gea’s situation also still needs to be clarified, according to Romano.
