Wilfried Gnonto’s move away from Leeds United is a possibility this January, according to Fabrizio Romano as he spoke exclusively to CaughtOffside for his Daily Briefing column.

Gnonto looked hugely impressive at points last season, though he couldn’t help Leeds escape relegation from the Premier League, so one imagines there’ll be a fair amount of interest in bringing the 20-year-old back to the top flight in the near future.

It seems Romano believes there is a chance that something like that could happen this January, though he also played down talk of Tottenham trying to sign Gnonto, who has been linked by some outlets as a potential target for Spurs this winter.

Romano has not heard anything about that yet, but THFC supporters may still be interested to know that there is a chance of Gnonto moving this January, meaning there could be a race on for the signature of the talented young Italy international.

Discussing this in his latest Daily Briefing column, Romano said: “Wilfried Gnonto – His departure from Leeds could be a possibility this January.

“He could leave but depends on the proposal and also negotiating with Leeds is never easy. Despite rumours, I have no confirmation of Tottenham links at this stage.”

Tottenham reportedly want Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto as he looks set to become available this January.

The highly-rated young Italian is not currently happy with life at Leeds after their relegation to the Championship, and it seems he wants out of the club this January.

Wilfried Gnonto could be one name that leaves Leeds in January as the winger is wanted by several clubs after making it clear over the summer that he wants to leave the Championship side. 

The Italian star handed in a transfer request during the summer transfer window following the Yorkshire club’s relegation to the Championship and the pursuit of Everton.

However, the move never materialised and Gnonto stayed but is not a key figure for Daniel Farke. The Italy international’s game-time has been limited so far this season at Elland Road, with featuring only 10 times for Leeds and bagging one goal.

Everton will likely be back in for Gnonto in January and Lazio are another club recently reported to be interested in the 20-year-old.

Should he leave Leeds, the Whites will go after a player they have had a long-term interest in. TeamTalk states that the Yorkshire club are keeping tabs on Fenerbahce winger Ryan Kent, who is expected to be made available for loan in January.

The outlet also claims that Bournemouth are set to battle it out with Leeds for the 27-year-old’s signature but the Championship side’s interest all depends on what happened with Gnonto.

Wilfried Gnonto is still looking for a way out of Leeds after the drama that surrounded the player over the summer and Lazio may be the club that offers him an exit. 

According to CalcioStyle, Lazio are evaluating making an offer to sign the Leeds winger in January with a loan-to-buy deal on the cards.

Maurizio Sarri is believed to still be keen on bolstering his attack during the January transfer window and Gnonto is deemed gettable.

The Italian star wanted to leave Elland Road over the summer with Everton one club pursuing the player.

That is unlikely to have changed heading into January and Lazio could appeal to the youngster.

The report states that Lazio could look to table an expensive loan deal with the right to make it permanent for £13.1m during the summer of 2024.

It is uncertain whether Leeds would accept this but it does not help to have an unhappy player around when the Yorkshire club are pushing for promotion.

With seven weeks left until the January transfer window opens for business, Leeds United could be forgiven for sweating over the future of one of their players.

Last summer was the busiest of times for new manager, Daniel Farke, and with the window still open three weeks after the season began, the all whites didn’t really have a settled side until after a number of matches had been played.

That’s arguably why the club spent the early part of the 2023/24 campaign in the lower reaches of the Championship, but as they’ve settled down and built up a head of steam, so they’ve climbed up the table and into their current third position.

Farke will, clearly, not want a repeat of the upheaval from the beginning of his tenure, however, he could have a sticky situation to deal with – again – with regards to Willy Gnonto.

The youngster clearly has talent but going on strike to try and force through a summer move wasn’t the best course of action.

Now Phil Hay has suggested things aren’t really going well in terms of contract talks with the player.

‘There was a quiet hope at Elland Road that, after Gnonto’s agitating in the hope of a move back to the top flight with Everton in August, the young winger might smooth the waters by committing to a new contract,’ he wrote in The Athletic (subscription required).

‘But, that possibility has not got off the ground yet and Gnonto’s modest amount of minutes this season are part of the reason transfer channels are already chattering about him and his options.’

Whether Leeds cut their losses at the beginning of the window and spend the money elsewhere, or insist on keeping him until season’s end remains to be seen.

Despite playing in the Championship with Leeds, the 20-year-old has not been shy in his eagerness to return to top-flight football, and of course, with Arsenal among the top clubs in England at the moment, the teenager would almost definitely jump at the chance to move to the Emirates.

During his time at Leeds, Gnonto, who signed from FC Zurich in 2022, has directly contributed to 10 goals in 38 games in all competitions.

Leeds United star Wilfried Gnonto is now reportedly ‘ready to say goodbye’ to the Championship club with his recent lack of game time an issue.

That is according to Tutto Mercato Web, who reports that Gnonto has asked to leave Elland Road with contact already having been made between Leeds and Lazio over a potential deal.

The Italian star is not a regular for Daniel Farke and only received one minute of action against Leicester City on Friday night.

The 20-year-old is wanted by several clubs such as Everton, Roma and the aforementioned Lazio.

However, Leeds‘ asking price is once again set to provide a stumbling block in any deal, with a fee well in excess of £20 million set to be demanded heading into the January transfer window.

Everton made a move for Gnonto during the summer and the player refused to play for Leeds and handed in a transfer request as a result.

The player wants to leave in January and it will be interesting to see how a transfer develops from here.

However, manager, Enzo Maresca, is taking nothing for granted and has admitted that there are three players in particular that he’s worried about.

“We know they are good in transition, but they are not only good in transition,” he said at his pre-match press conference.

“Summerville, James, Gnonto, they are very quick, we need to be careful. More than ever, we need many passes before we attack. If we attack quick, they will attack quick. We don’t want that.”

The youngster dug his heels in and threatened to never play for the club again after not being granted a transfer in the summer, and as Calciomercato now report, his agent is in direct contract with representatives from Serie A giant, Lazio.

Those developments would suggest that Gnonto is keen to return to his homeland, and whilst Leeds may not stand in his way for a second successive transfer window, there’s a likelihood that they’ll want a significant fee for his services.

From Farke’s perspective, he’ll surely want everything to be cleared up well before January, so he can foresee any other issues and plan accordingly.

Gnonto could be a big loss for the club, but if his heart isn’t in it, he’s better off being allowed to move on as Leeds can’t allow any passengers to derail their promotion push.

According to TeamTalk, 19-year-old, Willy Gnonto, who famously went on strike at the beginning of the 2023/24 Championship campaign, is still hoping for a move away, with Everton likely to rival any moves from clubs in Serie A.

There are still two months to go until the January window opens for business, and plenty can happen between now and then, though it sounds as if something significant needs to happen in order for the player to even think about changing his mind.

A fee of over £20m is likely to be needed in order to secure Gnonto’s services, and with a potential points deduction hanging over Everton’s heads, it’s doubtful that the Toffees would be able to persuade a player that seemingly doesn’t want to play in the Championship, to come to a club that could end up being sent there by season’s end.
