If there’s one thing that Aston Villa fans will know by now about Unai Emery, it is the seriousness with which he takes his work.

Though he was ridiculed during his time at Arsenal for the way in which he addressed interviewers, it distracted from the good work he was doing with the Gunners.

Ultimately, that was a coaching job that didn’t work out for him, though his stay at Villa Park seems to be the perfect fit.

Joint top of their Europa Conference League group going into the final two matches and fifth in the Premier League at the time of writing is proof enough that Emery is doing something right.

However, his way of working clearly doesn’t chime with everyone, and according to Football Insider, one player in particular is proving to be a bit of a challenge.

The outlet note that Jhon Duran has clashed with the Spaniard on a number of occasions to date, and because of the nature of his behaviour, it may well lead to him being sold in the January window.

Given that he’s only managed to play for the Villains for 114 minutes to date this season, per WhoScored, he’s hardly likely to be missed by the Villa Park faithful.

The Spaniard has really got the Villains ticking over brilliantly, and their current fifth place in the English top-flight is fully deserved.

Just three points away from Man City in the top spot, and joint top of their Europa Conference League group, there’s every reason to believe that if Emery is able to ensure that results and performances continue in the same manner, then 2023/24 could be a really special season for the club.

Much of the success has to be down to how well Emery has the dressing room functioning, and for the most part it appears that his squad are fully behind him – perhaps with one possible exception.

According to Football Insider, young Jhon Duran is proving to be a disruptive influence behind the scenes and, as a result, the club will look to offload him at the first opportunity.

The outlet suggest that a loan move is most likely, though clubs will surely be reticent to take a chance on a player that, at 19 years of age, is still learning his trade and must also learn to wait his turn.

Now Noticias RCN are reporting a possible dispute between the 19-year-old and his manager, after the player removed any trace of Aston Villa from his Instagram account and instead replaced them with an image of the controversial Chicago Bulls basketball legend, Dennis Rodman.

Known as a real hardliner if he needs to be, it’s unlikely that Emery will have taken whatever message it was that Duran was trying to send to him lightly.

With a Europa Conference League match against AZ Alkmaar coming up on Thursday evening, should Duran not feature in that match day squad, it’s a fair bet that his Villa ‘career’ will be swiftly brought to an end by his manager.

Emery expects hard work and everyone to be pulling in the same direction, so for Duran to have pulled a stunt like this is ill advised at best.

Although Unai Emery has his Aston Villa side flying high in the Premier League, the Spaniard still has his fair share of problems at Villa Park.

For a start, Football Insider are reporting that summer signing from Leicester City, Youri Tielemans, already wants to leave the club because of a lack of first-team action.

Another player in Jhon Jader Duran could also be forgiven for thinking that Emery’s cold shoulder treatment would suggest the Colombian doesn’t really have a future at Villa Park either.

According to WhoScored, Duran, who signed for the club in January, has participated in 11 matches during 2023/24, but hasn’t played 90 minutes in any of them.

In fact, the sum total of the minutes that he’s played in those 11 games across all competitions is a measly 114 – less than one and a half full matches.

It’s perhaps with that in mind that Colombia coach, Nestor Lorenzo, has weighed in with his two penneth on the situation.

“When he plays on the right, he is a player you like because he plays inwards more than outwards. He is a player who can play in either position eventually,” he was quoted as saying by AS.

“At Aston Villa he has a lot of competition, a lot of players in his position and he is not playing as much as he deserves, I hope he becomes a starter soon.”

From Emery’s point of view, he can’t allow his stubbornness to get in the way of what could end up being a fantastic season for the Villains.

Even if their charge up the Premier League tails off, there’s every chance of a decent crack at the Europa Conference League, however, the manager will need all of his players onside if he wants to succeed.

Aston Villa came from a goal down to win 3-1 against Crystal Palace, and it was the goal from Jhon Duran that inspired the late comeback.

Edouard scored for Palace in the 47th minute to give the away side the lead  seemingly setting them on course for victory.

However, in the 87th minute, Duran scored a stunning volley to draw the score level. Digne found him with a floating cross which he brought down with a superb chest control before firing a left-footed volley straight into the top-left corner.

The Sun recently reported that both Manchester United and Liverpool were interested in signing Chicago Fire youngster Duran. The 19-year-old attacker has been impressive since bursting onto the scene in the MLS and was bound to eventually find himself being targeted by clubs in Europe.

At 18 years old, Duran was recently given his first international appearance for Colombia, making it easier for any interested club to secure a work permit for the young attacker.

Making the step from the MLS to the Premier League won’t be easy, but if Liverpool or Chelsea can bring him in at a young age and mould and develop him over a few years, he could turn out to be a bit of a bargain in the modern era.

Chelsea recently signed Gabriel Slonina from Chicago Fire for a similar price, so the American club may be happy to deal with them once again.
