Inside Spain is a weekly instalment brought to you by Football España, providing an insight into all of the major stories coming out of the rich and intense climes of La Liga and beyond.

The injury crisis across football took several victims during this international break, but the anterior cruciate ligament tear suffered by Gavi felt particularly cruel. The 19-year-old was having a monstruous season, starting for Barcelona and Spain, but will now miss the rest of the club season, the Euros and the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The question for Barcelona is whether they try to replace him. Sporting Director Deco has explained that that is ‘impossible’ on the market, but Barcelona can bring in a loan signing for up to 80% of Gavi’s wages until the end of the season without salary limit restrictions.

So far the debate is whether they should try and persuade Tottenham Hotspur to part with the almost unused Giovani Lo Celso on loan, or bring forward the transfer of Vitor Roque. The 18-year-old Brazilian striker will join for €30m plus €31m in variables next summer, but they don’t have a back up for the creaking legs of Robert Lewandowski.

Meanwhile Real Madrid have lost Vinicius Junior until February and Eduardo Camavinga until mid-January, to add to a long-term injury list already containing Eder Militao, Thibaut Courtois, Arda Guler and Aurelien Tchouameni.

Yet the talk about replacements in Madrid is quiet – at least for the players. Conflicting information continues to leak out about Carlo Ancelotti and the potential for him to take over the Brazil job next summer, but Los Blancos have contacted Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi about a potential vacancy. He is added to an impressive list of candidates already containing Xabi Alonso.

Elsewhere, Real Betis are negotiating with Leeds United for midifelder Marc Roca, who has been excellent since arriving. West Ham are interested in Celta Vigo defender Oscar Mingueza, and Sevilla are after Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi.

In less frivolous news, the public prosecutor has requested a sentence of nine years behind bars and a fine of €150k for Dani Alves if they get a guilty conviction against the Brazilian for rape. Meanwhile former Sevilla and Ajax midfielder Tarik Oulida will escape jail time entirely after sexually assaulting his own six-year-old daughter.

Carlo Ancelotti is expected to leave Real Madrid at the end of the season and reports in Spain state that the La Liga giants are interested in a surprise Premier League manager.

According to Sport, Real Madrid have reportedly made contact with Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi to explore the possibility of appointing him as Carlo Ancelotti’s successor for the 2024/25 season.

Initial discussions are said to have already taken place between Madrid and the Italian coach as they believe he is ready to take the next step in his career as the Brighton boss has done an incredible job in the Premier League since arriving.

De Zerbi’s Brighton side are one of the most exciting to watch in the English top flight and he has already been linked to many big clubs across Europe.

Roberto De Zerbi is liked by Real Madrid

A vacancy is expected to open up at the Bernabeu next summer when Ancelotti will take over as the Brazilian national team’s new manager.

It is still not 100 per cent certain if the legendary manager will take up this role but Real Madrid are preparing for that outcome.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso is seen as the favourite to replace the Madrid boss but De Zerbi could now be an outsider to take over at the biggest football club on the planet.

Ansu Fati has really been enjoying himself of late at Brighton and Hove Albion, and is beginning to recapture the form that made him a breakout star at Barcelona.

The youngster is really beginning to find his groove with the Seagulls, and as WhoScored note, he has three goals, an assist and a man-of-the-match award in his last six games.

If he continues finding the back of the net for the Premier League outfit, Roberto De Zerbi would surely be keen to make his loan arrangement from the Catalan giants more permanent.

Ever since he suffered a serious knee injury which really stunted his progress, it’s been a long, hard road back to fitness for Fati, though he’s playing with a smile on his face again and that’s important.

Brighton have helped him to get his mojo back, and it hindsight, it was probably the best decision that Ansu and his representatives could’ve made.

However, his south coast sojourn would seem to be fleeting at best.

That’s because, according to Sport, the player wants to return to Barcelona at the end of the current season and prove his worth at the club.

The outlet go on to say that Fati believes he’s a better option coming in from the left side than Xavi has there currently.

Given he could likely make Barca a pretty penny in transfer fees, it’ll be a strong negotiation between all parties at the end of 2023/24, if Barca’s views don’t align with those of Fati and his representatives.

Brighton & Hove Albion CEO Paul Barber has acknowledged the club’s preparedness for the potential departure of head coach Roberto De Zerbi.

Since taking over from Graham Potter in September last year, the Italian has significantly elevated the team’s performance, achieving a historic sixth-place finish in the Premier League last season and securing qualification for the Europa League.

While De Zerbi’s impact on the club has been substantial, the acknowledgement of preparedness suggests an awareness of the dynamic nature of managerial positions in football especially a team operating under a certain model like the Seagulls.

“Good players and good staff will always be looked at by competitors, and we’re prepared for that, we’re realistic about that and we try to plan for those eventualities,” Barber told talkSPORT.

Roberto De Zerbi has garnered significant praise for his accomplishments with Brighton, leading to speculation linking the 44-year-old head coach with top European clubs such as Real Madrid and Manchester United, according to a report from Football Insider.

His success in elevating Brighton’s standing and achieving historic milestones has attracted attention from prominent football institutions.

Roberto De Zerbi has been a big hit at Brighton

Brighton’s chief executive admitted to talkSPORT: “The biggest conundrum with our model is the better we do, the more vulnerable we become, because people look at what we’re doing, how we’re doing it, the people who are doing it for us, and they want them.”

In his tenure at Brighton, Roberto De Zerbi has secured 26 victories, drawn 12 matches, and suffered 18 defeats in the 56 games he has overseen.

The club presently holds the eighth position in the Premier League table, trailing Newcastle United in seventh by a single point and standing seven points away from the top four.

Although he appears to have settled well in Man United’s Champions League fixtures, Rasmus Hojlund can’t buy a goal for love nor money in the Premier League.

The highly-rated striker is going through one of those periods that strikers hate, where any little thing that can do wrong, does go wrong.

Clearly, everyone connected with the club will be hoping that it’s a blip that soon ends for the player, though that hasn’t stopped the club, apparently, going after another marksman.

Evan Ferguson celebrates a goal

According to Football Insider, even though Brighton and Hove Albion striker, Evan Ferguson, has only just signed a new contract with the Seagulls, that hasn’t apparently deterred the Red Devils from making it known that they’ll be keeping an eye on proceedings.

Moreover, the outlet note that United could make a move for the player in the near future.

That would suggest that the club aren’t too enamoured by the purchase of Hojlund after all, and it could be another huge decision from Sir Jim Ratcliffe as he sets his stall out at his new club.

Quite how such a move would be received by the Old Trafford faithful is anyone’s guess and would also hint at the issue of the powers that be not being overly impressed by Erik ten Hag’s manoeuvres in the transfer market.

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi expressed his irritation with the majority of Premier League referees, stating that he doesn’t like “80 percent” of them.

De Zerbi’s remarks come in the wake of recent criticism aimed at officials by high profile managers like Mikel Arteta.

In their most recent match, Brighton drew 1-1 with Sheffield United, extending their winless streak to six league games dating back to September 24. Brighton had a 1-0 lead before Mahmoud Dahoud received a red card for a reckless challenge on Ben Osborn in the second half, allowing the Blades to equalise with an Adam Webster own goal just five minutes later. The visitors almost snatched all three points when some intricate play saw Jayden Bogle drag his shot agonisingly wide.

While De Zerbi had no objections to Dahoud’s sending off, he raised concerns about the inconsistency of VAR in England

“I don’t like their behaviour on the pitch. How would I like to see them change? I only think about my players, it isn’t my job. I accept everything. Now I am working in England and speak only about English referees. England is the only country when there is VAR, you are not sure that the decision is right,” De Zerbi stated on Sky Sports.

After a promising start to the league campaign, Brighton now find themselves six points adrift of Aston Villa, who beat them 6-1 at Villa Park in the back end of September.

De Zerbi will hope to see better form after the international break as well as an improvement on the injury front with the likes of Pervis Estupinan, Danny Welbeck, Solly March and Evan Ferguson currently struggling with fitness following the hectic schedule.

Roberto De Zerbi went on a furious rant after the game claiming that he does not like most of the referees in the Premier League.

The game saw Brighton take a lead in the 6th minute through Simon Adringa but saw themselves reduced to 10 men in the 69th minute after Mahmoud Dahoud was given a straight red card for an ugly tackle on Ben Osborn.

Sheffield United capitalised on the extra men and equalised 6 minutes later with Adam Webster scoring an own goal for Brighton.

De Zerbi who was an animated figure for most of the game was booked for his furious tirade after the Sheffield equaliser.

After the game, the Italian manager went on an incredible rant and admitted that he does not like 80% of the English referees.

The Seagulls boss said:

“I am honest and clear. I don’t like 80 per cent of England’s referees.”

“It’s not a new thing. I don’t like them. I don’t like their behaviour on the pitch.”

And while he accepted the red-card decision, he criticised the the use of the VAR in the Premier League. He added:

“If I see the new rules it’s a red card, clear.

“But I was a player and the dynamic of the situation wasn’t a red card, but we have to accept (it). Dahoud knows the mistake.”

“England is the only country where, when there is VAR, you are not sure the decision is right.

“In other countries, you have to be sure the referee is 100 per cent right. In England no, I’m not able to understand (that).”

This is not the first time he has voiced his concerns about the referees and the officiating in the league.

Back in February, he was shown a red card by Darren England for taking out his frustration on him while going down the tunnel after the Fulham game.

He also rejected an apology from Howard Webb when his team were wrongly disallowed a goal against Crystal Palace.

Manchester United should sack Erik Ten Hag and replace him with Roberto De Zerbi.

That is the view of former Aston Villa and Liverpool striker Stan Collymore, who doesn’t think Ten Hag is the right man to lead the Red Devils despite the Dutchman lifting the 2022-23 Carabao Cup in his first season in charge.

Eighth in the Premier League table and on the verge of being dumped out of the Champions League at the group stage, United, who have already been eliminated from the Carabao Cup, are enduring a dreadful run.

And with Luton Town next up for Ten Hag’s struggling side, the pressure on the United boss could be turned up a notch. Failure to beat Rob Edwards’ relegation-threatened Hatters would lead to serious questions being asked over Ten Hag’s position in the Old Trafford dugout.

Irrespective of what happens at Old Trafford on Saturday though, Collymore thinks United should part ways with the former Ajax manager.

“Erik Ten Hag does not have the personality to carry Manchester United,” Collymore said in an exclusive interview.

“Being Manchester United manager comes with immense responsibility but whenever I look at Ten Hag on the sidelines, he just doesn’t fill me with confidence. It’s quite the opposite actually – he looks like a rabbit caught in headlights, especially whenever United fall behind.

“I know the club try not to sack their managers during a season but he has got to go. If the Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe decide to stick with Ten Hag for the time being, fine, but come the end of the season they must do everything in their power to get Roberto De Zerbi out of Brighton and Hove Albion.”

Going on to explain why De Zerbi would be his pick to succeed Ten Hag at Manchester United, Collymore believes the Italian makes for a better man-manager and coach.

“Let De Zerbi come in and ship out all the deadwood. He’s a beast, he wouldn’t mess around,” he added.

“Not only that, but he would almost certainly get the best out of their underperforming squad. He can mould a team to play the ‘Manchester United way’, and make no mistake if he took charge at United and was in a press conference following a defeat he’d make it known to the players that their performance wasn’t good enough. No ifs or buts, if De Zerbi said they must improve, they would have to improve or risk being let go.

“It’s really simple for me – Ten Hag should get sacked, and if Manchester United are serious about changing to this coaching philosophy and having a proper managerial presence around the place then De Zerbi is their man.”

Do you agree with Collymore? – Would De Zerbi do a good job at Manchester United? – Let us know in the comments.

Brighton and Hove Albion’s superb inter play resulted in a deserved second against Ajax in the Europa League, Simon Adingra putting the Seagulls in dreamland.

Ansu Fati had slid the visitors ahead before 15 minutes were on the clock, and another goal early in the second half has virtually ended the match as a contest.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side eased through the gears, and with the hosts defence at sixes and sevens, Adingra was the calmest man on the pitch to slot home.
