As they look towards the January transfer window in order to be able to acquire a new striker, West Ham could be set to offload at least one player to free up space in the squad and the wage bill.

The Hammers haven’t had a poor season by any stretch at this stage, but they are teetering in mid-table after a bit of a blip, and the second half of the campaign really could go one of two ways, depending on how well they work the market in the new year.

A striker is an absolute priority for the team, someone who is a guarantee of goals. In order to help find and pay for just such an exponent, Thilo Kehrer could be one player that makes way.

Claret and Hugh are reporting that the Irons will let the 27-year-old German go for as little as £12m in January, which in the current climate is likely to prove to be a bargain that many clubs can’t refuse.

According to WhoScored, the player has only played for 361 minutes in total this season at West Ham, with just 18 of them coming in the Premier League.

It’s clearly in the player’s own interests to get a move away at the soonest opportunity too, though the east Londoners are prepared to wait until next summer to cash in if no offers arrive in the meantime.

There’s just over a month until the January transfer window opens for business, and West Ham United need to bring in a quality front man as soon as practicable.

The Irons have spread the goals around this season but it’s noticeable that their strikers haven’t been at the races where finding the net in 2023/24 is concerned.

David Moyes appeared to try once before to just go with what he had, rather than spending money for the sake of it and, as luck would have it, he seemed to get away with it. Not anymore.

If the Scot wants the Hammers up towards the top of the Premier League and challenging for honours, then a striker purchase in January is an absolutely necessity.

Not just any striker either, but one who is a guarantee of goals.

Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke might not be a household name as such, but he does have seven goals and one assist in 13 games in all competitions this season, per WhoScored, which is an impressive return in a team that’s struggling badly under Andoni Iraola.

You’d imagine that the Cherries would fight tooth and nail to keep a player with that sort of output, but it seems as though they won’t have to.

As Sky Sports report, Iraola has been quoted as saying that “he’s happy here,” in relation to the question from a reporter to the Bournemouth manager about Solanke’s links with West Ham.

That’s sure to disappoint the east Londoners who’ll likely have to look elsewhere for their new front man.

West Ham United striker Danny Ings may not have had the desired impact during his time at the London Stadium, but it seems he’s expected to get one final chance to prove himself at the club.

Ings, formerly of the likes of Southampton, Liverpool and Aston Villa, has always been a pretty reliable and prolific performer at this level, but for one reason or another it’s just not quite happened for him in his time with the Hammers.

However, it now looks like there will be a fresh opportunity for Ings to play more and show what he’s capable of, as David Moyes’ main man up front, Michail Antonio, is facing a spell on the side-lines due to an injury.

Discussing the situation with Give Me Sport, journalist Dean Jones said he felt this could be one last chance for Ings to work his way back into Moyes’ plans, so it’s clear this looks like being an important moment for him with the east London outfit.

Danny Ings in action for West Ham

Jones says it looks like Ings was surely heading for a January transfer, but “Maybe this is a late, last opportunity for him to prove that he can make this work out at West Ham.

“Certainly, he is going to get more opportunities now than he would have had before.

“But it’ll be interesting to see if that’s definitely the route that West Ham want to go down and how much they even trust Danny Ings.”

David Moyes should be looking to approach the January transfer window with confidence rather than trepidation, as long as his West Ham side don’t fall further down the Premier League table.

Their results of late haven’t been as positive as might be expected from one of the better squads in the division, and the way their season has started to pan out has echoes of 2022/23.

On that occasion the Hammers were on the slide until a late-season surge and the winning of the Europa Conference League turned their campaign into an unqualified success.

Though they’ve strengthened significantly since selling Declan Rice to London rivals, Arsenal, they’ve still struggled to gain some sort of momentum.

It’s perhaps with that in mind that they’re being linked to Roma’s brilliant Italian midfielder, Bryan Cristante.

TV Play suggest that the east Londoners are looking to gazump Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham, and it’s believed that an offer in the region of £26.3m, will be enough to tempt the Giallorossi to sell.

The 28-year-old has been a fixture for Jose Mourinho for much of the current season, so it’s unclear just how the ‘Special One’ will feel about losing his player to the Premier League.

With Mourinho previously being linked to the West Ham manager’s job, per La Roma 24, could a move for Cristante even be the pre-cursor to seeing the Portuguese back in the saddle in the English top-flight?

As the January transfer window comes into view, West Ham need to seriously consider how much they want to spend and who they need to buy in order to push them forward in the second half of the 2023/24 campaign.

The east Londoners, after a decent start to the season, seem to have gone a little off the boil of late, though the upcoming fixtures and festive programme does hand them a chance to claw themselves back up the table before any new additions are added.

One area where they’ve struggled is up front, with centre-forward, Michail Antonio, managing just two goals so far per WhoScored.

Whether the Jamaican international remains at the club beyond the next window is a moot point, but he was quite vocal on The Footballer’s Football Podcast about an “unreal” player that he’d love the Hammers to sign.

Antonio name checked Man City’s £150,000 per week (Capology) midfielder, Kalvin Phillips, and, as Tutto Juve now note, the Hammers appear to be in for him.

Kalvin Phillips in action

Given that it’s believed that the likes of Juventus and Newcastle are interested in the player’s services too, it would be a real coup if David Moyes could land Phillips in January.

From the player’s point of view, a move away from City has to appeal given the close proximity of the European Championship and the need for him to be visible and playing in order to get a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad.

West Ham United reportedly now fear that they’re going to be beaten to the signing of Marcos Leonardo by Newcastle United.

The talented 20-year-old has been linked with a number of top clubs, including the likes of Real Madrid, but it seems he’s now perhaps more likely to head to St James’ Park as his next destination.

West Ham had been hopeful over signing Leonardo, but it seems their hopes are now fading as they seem to anticipate their rivals moving into pole position for this particular deal.

Both West Ham and Newcastle are expected to be busy this January, and that will inevitably mean that they go in for some of the same players.

Leonardo was one who was on both agendas, but it looks like the Hammers will now need to explore alternatives.

West Ham United could reportedly go back in for the transfer of Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke after failing to sign him during the summer.

Solanke has shown some impressive form for the Cherries recently and it could earn him a big move in the near future, with the Daily Mirror suggesting he was a £40million target for the Hammers a few months ago.

West Ham have had an inconsistent start to the season, so could probably do well to bring in more fire-power in attack, with Solanke looking ideal for that role.

The 26-year-old had a difficult start to his career when he failed to make a breakthrough at big clubs like Chelsea and Liverpool, but he’s starting to show his worth in the Premier League now.

Dominic Solanke in action for Bournemouth

The former England international already has seven goals in all competitions this season, equalling his tally from last term despite playing 20 games fewer.

It’ll be interesting to see what kind of money is required for West Ham to sign Solanke this winter, with £40m previously apparently not quite enough.

There’s some potentially good news ahead for either West Ham or Newcastle United, after a striker linked with both clubs was said to be leaving their current employers in January.

For both the Magpies and the Hammers, the need for a striker is becoming more acute by the week.

Eddie Howe’s side have been devastated by injuries, and the 14 that they currently have (Premier Injuries) include front men Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak.

West Ham’s problem is completely different in that neither of their main two front men – Michail Antonio and Danny Ings – are injured, but they’ve only found the net twice this season, and both of those goals were scored by Antonio, per WhoScored.

Marcos Leonardo in action.

One of the brightest South American prospects is Santos’ 20-year-old Brazilian attacker, Marcos Leonardo.

South American football expert, Tim Vickery (via CaughtOffside), linked the east Londoners with the player, whilst Football Espana note the interest of Real Madrid, Sevilla, Newcastle and Roma.

Fabrizio Romano, speaking to CaughtOffside for his exclusive Daily Briefing column, has given hope to those clubs with his latest transfer update on the player.

“He will leave Santos in January and the price could be around €20m, but it’s a complicated package that could include add-ons, percentage on future sale etc,” he said.

“Roma wanted him last August but they had three bids rejected, and now it’s a very open race.”

At just €20m, Marcos Leonardo would almost certainly represent a bargain in today’s market, even if he happens to be a player for the longer rather than short term.

Things have really gone from bad to worse for Timo Werner at RB Leipzig, the former Chelsea forward enduring a nightmare in the 2023/24 season.

WhoScored note he has just two goals across the whole campaign so far, and his place at RB Leipzig this season has often been taken by the likes of Benjamin Sesko and even Xavi Simons.

The only realistic option for the former Chelsea flop, now 27 years of age, is a move away, and as 90Min note, he has apparently been offered to the Premier League and that Fulham, Crystal Palace and West Ham are interested in his services.

However, that information doesn’t tally with that of transfer expert and CaughtOffside columnist, Fabrizio Romano.

“Despite rumours, I have to say no, honestly, I didn’t hear that he’s being offered to other clubs,” he said when speaking to CaughtOffside for his exclusive Daily Briefing column.

“Some Premier League clubs have asked about his situation as it’s not an easy time for him at Leipzig, but I don’t have any confirmation yet on club names as it’s purely early stages, nothing concrete yet.”

Of course, things can and often do change, and if Werner wants to kick-start his fading career, then leaving Leipzig would appear to be the only option available to him at this moment.

Seemingly devoid of confidence in front of goal, the German international needs to find a club where his skill set is perfectly complimentary to that which said club already has in situ.

One of the most natural and feared goal scorers when he was at Leipzig first time around, things have gradually got worse for Werner.

However, he’s still got plenty of time to reverse the narrative.
