It’s often forgotten that elite football players are human beings too and sometimes the pressure gets too much, as it appears to have done in Lyle Foster’s case.

The Burnley ace will take an indefinite period of leave after a mental health episode, and the Clarets, to their immense credit, have taken the matter seriously and rallied round the player.

VIncent Kompany spoke to the club’s media regarding the matter, and Burnley also released a statement on behalf of the player and his family via the official club website.

With just one win from their 10 Premier League games so far, Burnley’s paltry four-point haul arguably isn’t what Vincent Kompany would’ve been expecting from a side that walked the Championship last season.

A next game away at Arsenal offers no respite for the Clarets, though there is a run of games afterwards – West Ham, Sheffield United and Wolves – where they could pick up some points.

One player that won’t be helping them move up the table, however, is on-loan striker, Wout Weghorst.

The Dutchman, who’d spent a previous loan spell at Man United, was farmed out again, this time to Bundesliga side, Hoffenheim, but as with his United sojourn, things haven’t gone well.

According to WhoScored, the 31-year-old has only managed a solitary goal all season and, as Turkish outlet, Star, report, Weghorst isn’t happy with his lot.

There’s a suggestion that Turkish giants, Galatasaray are interested in the player’s services and Weghorst himself isn’t averse to their approaches.

Having already played for Besiktas in the Super Lig, a period where he was prolific scoring eight goals and providing four assists in 16 games according to transfermarkt, the Dutchman understands exactly what it takes to be a success in the division.

If all parties are agreeable, there’s no reason why a deal can’t be agreed in January.

At present Burnley are struggling to get going in the 2023/24 Premier League season.

With just four points and one win from their nine games so far, Vincent Kompany will understand that his squad need to start getting points on the board quickly.

Their next game is against Bournemouth on Saturday in what could quite conceivably be seen as a relegation six-pointer even at this early stage of the season.

The Cherries find themselves in a slightly worse position than the Clarets, having not won any matches so far and just three draws to their name.

Whilst any result isn’t likely to be season-defining, it will certainly inspire confidence in whichever team ends up victorious.

In the meantime, one of Burnley’s players could end up signing for a Champions League side.

According to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, 24-year-old goalkeeper Arijanet Muric is being looked at by both Union Berlin and La Liga outfit, Sevilla, both of whom are in this season’s premier European football competition.

It would appear that he’s not happy with the amount of playing time he’s receiving currently, with WhoScored noting that he’s only made two appearances in 2023/24, both of which have come in the Carabao Cup.

To that end, a loan move in the upcoming window may suit all parties.

If there’s one way to describe Vincent Kompany as a player it’s ‘no nonsense.’

The former Man City captain took no prisoners when stationed in the centre of their defence, playing the fullest part in their recent successes before turning his hand to management.

It’s clear that the Belgian has always demanded the highest of standards, however, this season his Burnley side have been found wanting in many aspects, not least a leaky defence.

Kompany is unlikely to accept the status quo in his back four for too much longer. Heading into the international break, their 20 goals conceded is only better than bottom-placed Sheffield United’s 22 – and eight of those came in one game against Newcastle.

It’s perhaps with this in mind that the Clarets will be eagerly awaiting the opening of the January transfer window.

Until then Kompany will have to make do with what he has in situ, though once the first day of the new year comes around, don’t be surprised to see Burnley heavily involved in a deal or two.

According to reporter Alan Nixon, writing on his Patreon page (subscription required), Burnley are running the rule over Sunderland’s Dan Ballard, a 6ft 2in beast of a centre-back.

It’s unlikely that the Black Cats will be willing to let him leave without a fight, though the lure of the Premier League will surely be too hard for Ballard to resist.

He’s been around the block a bit having already turned out for Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle, Crystal Palace and Everton amongst others, and this summer a switch to Vincent Kompany’s Burnley was on the cards.

The 32-year-old had apparently been without a club after leaving the Toffees, a decision that was no doubt influenced by the ACL injury that the player suffered back in March 2022.

BBC Sport report that he had been on trial with the Clarets and had even participated in friendlies against Portuguese giants, Benfica, as well as Real Betis and Genk.

Not only that, the player had even got as far as agreeing terms with the club that find themselves joint bottom of the table without a win this season and only a point to their name.

Things had therefore been looking up until Kompany pulled the plug on the deal, something that Townsend himself has put down to his enforced 18-month hiatus.

“The situation is I’ve not played a competitive match for 18 months so because of my age and lack of minutes English clubs can’t take that risk,” he was quoted as saying.

“I looked abroad and thought clubs would be desperate to sign a player of my experience but it was the same again, lack of minutes.

“The ACL is a very complex injury and when players get it in the latter stages of their career they sometimes never fully recover to their previous selves, so that’s the worry.”

It’s a decision that has clearly hurt the player, after he admitted via BBC Sport that the snub reduced him to tears.

“It was probably one of the toughest conversations I’ve had in my career,” Townsend added.

“If I was bad and knew I wasn’t going to get a contract I could prepare myself. But to be looking at houses, looking at schools, talking about squad numbers and then to be told the contract is no longer on offer, it rocked my world.”

At present, the player has still been unable to find himself a club, and if he’s unable to do so before too long, the likelihood is that his career at the highest level is over.

Things haven’t been going so well for Vincent Kompany and Burnley this season, with the Clarets currently 19th in the Premier League table with just a point.

Only Luton Town are below them in the table indicating the harsh realities of life in the English top flight to the Belgian’s players.

There’s still a very long way to go in the 2023/24 season of course, and Kompany will likely be hoping that sooner or later something clicks, and they can start making their way up the table.

Their task might have been made easier if they had been able to sign 25-year-old marksman, Dodi Lukebakio, from Hertha Berlin in the summer.

A fellow Belgian, Sport BILD reported that Burnley had made a £9.5m bid for his services in the transfer window.

However, he ended up moving to La Liga outfit, Sevilla, and, according to an interview he gave to Spanish daily, MARCA, it seems to have been an easy decision.

“When a club like Sevilla show interest, of course you have to listen,” he was quoted as saying.

“We then talked a lot. You don’t have to think that much because they are a top club and that’s what I want, to play to show myself, to improve as a young player. It wasn’t difficult to choose Sevilla.

Given that the Andalusians were bottom of the Spanish top-flight until their win over Las Palmas at the weekend, a game in which Lukebakio played his first minutes for the club and scored the winner, he might’ve been forgiven for thinking that his initial choice had been ill advised at best.

Perhaps now he can kick-start his career in Spain, whilst Kompany will want his side to kick on too.
