The rise of Newcastle United under the ownership of the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) and the management of Eddie Howe can most notably be seen by the fact that the Magpies are now on a level playing field with any other club regarding transfers.

When European football’s hottest properties become available Newcastle are one of the teams in the conversation, and that’s something unlikely to have been the case even as recently as a couple of years ago.

According to Mais Futebol, the Magpies are now looking at the possibility of paying Goncalo Inacio’s €60m release clause in the upcoming transfer window.

The 22-year-old Sporting centre-back has also been linked to Man United and Liverpool, per The Hard Tackle.

Goncalo Inacio celebrates scoring against Arsenal

It’s obvious why all three Premier League outfits would be keen to acquire the Portuguese international.

Man United would appear to have question marks over the futures of both Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane, Liverpool wouldn’t be averse to having another high-quality exponent to play alongside Virgil van Dijk and Newcastle’s defensive injury woes are getting worse by the week.

Sporting aren’t likely to be too enamoured at potentially losing one of their best players, however, if any team meets the release clause, there’s little they can do.

It would then be purely down to the players own wishes as to where he wishes to further his career.

If Newcastle genuinely want to be considered a force in the Premier League, then they need to make sure that they’re not ‘one season wonders’ and drift away after a brilliant 2022/23.

They were close to breaking their silverware hoodoo but were beaten in the Carabao Cup final by Manchester United, the team that they recently knocked out in this season’s competition.

Alongside Liverpool, the Magpies have to be one of the favourites for the trophy, however, injuries are beginning to bite and affecting their Champions League chances and ability to move up the table.

At the time of writing, ahead of the Premier League fixture against Chelsea this weekend, Newcastle find themselves in seventh position, and eight points off leaders, Man City.

However, as Premier Injuries report, they also currently have 15 players out of action, which is the most in the English top-flight.

To that end, it’s understandable why they might be looking for reinforcements in the January window, and they should be doing so with one eye on Financial Fair Play.

SportBILD’s senior reporter and CaughtOffside columnist, Christian Falk, has noted the Magpies interest in Werder Bremen’s Marvin Ducksch.

It isn’t clear how much the striker will cost, though with five goals and three assists in 10 Bundesliga matches, per WhoScored, Newcastle would do well to not allow the player to slip through their fingers.

West Ham United reportedly now fear that they’re going to be beaten to the signing of Marcos Leonardo by Newcastle United.

The talented 20-year-old has been linked with a number of top clubs, including the likes of Real Madrid, but it seems he’s now perhaps more likely to head to St James’ Park as his next destination.

West Ham had been hopeful over signing Leonardo, but it seems their hopes are now fading as they seem to anticipate their rivals moving into pole position for this particular deal.

Both West Ham and Newcastle are expected to be busy this January, and that will inevitably mean that they go in for some of the same players.

Leonardo was one who was on both agendas, but it looks like the Hammers will now need to explore alternatives.

Newcastle United could reportedly turn to Roma manager Jose Mourinho in case they lose current manager Eddie Howe to the England national team at any point in the near future.

According to reports in Italy, Mourinho is on Newcastle’s radar as an option as Howe continues to be strongly tipped as a successor to Gareth Southgate.

Mourinho has a fine record from his time in the Premier League, having won the title three times in two spells in charge of Chelsea.

However, more recently he struggled in spells in charge of Manchester United and Tottenham.

Mourinho is, however, understood to be admired by Newcastle’s backers PIF.

Though they will need to keep within the bounds of Financial Fair Play, Newcastle’s lofty ambitions under the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) are clear.

The Magpies upward trajectory is continuing, though their immediate ambitions may have to be given a rain check as they currently have 14 players out injured (Premier Injuries) with some important Premier League and Champions League games on the horizon.

Whether or not they negotiate the games this side of Christmas successfully, it appears almost certain that they will enter the transfer market when it opens in January.

Eddie Howe continues to be backed in that regard by the owners, and PIF will understand that, injuries or not, Howe still needs to be given the right tools to do the job if they want him to bring the success they crave to St. James’ Park.

To that end, Portuguese outlets O Jogo and Record (h/t TeamTalk) are reporting that the Magpies could be looking to make a double swoop for Sporting pair, Goncalo Inacio and Ousmane Diomande.

TeamTalk note that their combined release clauses total €140m/£122m, so it would represent a huge outlay from the Newcastle board.

Unless they’re able to general significant income to balance out the spend, the likelihood is that buying both players will have to wait.

Injuries could still ensure that one of the pair has to be secured in January, with the other perhaps following in the summer.

There’s some potentially good news ahead for either West Ham or Newcastle United, after a striker linked with both clubs was said to be leaving their current employers in January.

For both the Magpies and the Hammers, the need for a striker is becoming more acute by the week.

Eddie Howe’s side have been devastated by injuries, and the 14 that they currently have (Premier Injuries) include front men Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak.

West Ham’s problem is completely different in that neither of their main two front men – Michail Antonio and Danny Ings – are injured, but they’ve only found the net twice this season, and both of those goals were scored by Antonio, per WhoScored.

Marcos Leonardo in action.

One of the brightest South American prospects is Santos’ 20-year-old Brazilian attacker, Marcos Leonardo.

South American football expert, Tim Vickery (via CaughtOffside), linked the east Londoners with the player, whilst Football Espana note the interest of Real Madrid, Sevilla, Newcastle and Roma.

Fabrizio Romano, speaking to CaughtOffside for his exclusive Daily Briefing column, has given hope to those clubs with his latest transfer update on the player.

“He will leave Santos in January and the price could be around €20m, but it’s a complicated package that could include add-ons, percentage on future sale etc,” he said.

“Roma wanted him last August but they had three bids rejected, and now it’s a very open race.”

At just €20m, Marcos Leonardo would almost certainly represent a bargain in today’s market, even if he happens to be a player for the longer rather than short term.

Despite a plethora of injuries at the club, Newcastle have no intention it would seem of extending any deal for one of their out of favour players.

Premier Injuries show that the Magpies currently have 14 players out of action, which is the worst in the English top-flight at present.

Many of those injuries will see players out until the new year at the earliest and that’s likely to mean Eddie Howe will need to scour the market for suitable, and perhaps short term, replacements.

One player he won’t be counting on is Ryan Fraser, who was sent out on loan after it was believed that he had fallen out with his manager.

Currently at Southampton, the 29-year-old has been ripping it up in the Championship and has been a major factor in why the Saints find themselves in fourth position at present.

Transfer expert, Dean Jones, doesn’t see a way back for him at St. James’ Park, telling Give Me Sport:

“I think if Southampton get the chance to sign Ryan Fraser then it’s something that they will be jumping at if he continues to be like this.

“Not just a player, but the character that he’s shown and the personality. Southampton were crying out for identity this season and they want to see a team that is playing a certain way but also has characters within it that match who they are and what they’ve been in the past.

“Ryan Fraser obviously had to make a big decision in terms of moving down to the Championship and he didn’t want to commit himself to being at that level, but I think he’s seeing signs that Southampton won’t be at that level very long and that they can get out of it.

“And I think, yeah, Southampton will definitely want to sign Ryan Fraser permanently. It’s just a case of proving to him that this is the place for him to be.”

Given how well Fraser has been playing down at St. Mary’s, it’s difficult to imagine that he would want to return to a place where he’s clearly not welcome in any event.

It’s not clear what any fee would look like should the two clubs wish to try and strike an agreement, but it certainly appears to be in everyone’s best interests to get a deal over the line.

It never rains but it pours for Eddie Howe and Newcastle United, with another injury practically forcing the club to enter the transfer market in January.

At the time of writing, the Magpies are the club worst hit by injuries.

After Callum Wilson was added to the list, it means that Howe now has 14 players out (per Premier Injuries) and unable to call upon them.

Ahead of the final group games in the Champions League and some important upcoming Premier League matches, that’s a bitter pill for the club to swallow.

With Alexander Isak also out, the January transfer window can’t come soon enough for Howe, as he seeks to recruit some extra firepower for the second half of the season.

According to 90Min, the club are likely to reignite their interest in 21-year-old marksman, Hugo Ekitike.

The player chose Paris Saint-Germain over the Magpies during a previous window but isn’t really getting a look in at the French giants. Indeed, the outlet note that he’s played just eight minutes in the 2023/24 campaign.

To that end, it would be sensible for him to reassess his options.

Any January move is likely to be a loan in the first instance, and 90min also note the interest of West Ham, who appear desperate for a striker of their own.

With Euro 2024 just around the corner, there’s every chance for players to hit a rich vain of form at just the right time to be able to force their way into their international side.

Though Gareth Southgate has the usual suspects to choose from for his England squad, he should always be open to integrating others of their form warrants it.

We’ve seen with Raheem Sterling’s continued omission since the World Cup, that even those players that appear to be dead certs when it comes to selection only need a dip in form to find their place won by someone else.

Southgate didn’t pick Newcastle’s in-form Anthony Gordon for the matches against Malta and Liechtenstein this weekend, but he has sent the player a message which he’d do well to heed.

“He is a good player. He was very good with our under-21s last year. He is very close (to the senior squad), I have to say,” he was quoted as saying by the Evening Standard.

“I like his attitude, I like the way he works so hard for the team. Of course, I am sure he was hoping for a call at this moment, but there are good players playing well in that position on the field.

“But I think, like a couple of others, they have always got to think a little bit further ahead as to opportunities that can come up. I think for somebody like Anthony that is eminently possible with us.”

The carrot that Southgate has dangled is an interesting one.

Gordon qualifies for Scotland by virtue of his grandparents, and there’s likely to be more chance of the 22-year-old breaking through quicker with them than with the Three Lions.

By leaving things open ended for now, Southgate has played a blinder for it gives Gordon some real food for thought and motivation for the second half of the season.

No decision either way has been made yet, and it will be interesting to see how Gordon reacts.
