Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea are beginning to get themselves together after a slow start to their 2023/24 campaign.

Notwithstanding the recent home defeat against Brentford, the Blues have managed an epic 4-4 draw against Man City, a 2-2 against Arsenal and a 4-1 win at Tottenham to bring them up to 10th position in the Premier League, just five points behind sixth-placed Manchester United.

Given that they’ve eight injuries too – some to key players – according to Premier Injuries, it’s not the worst beginning to a campaign.

As the players start to return, theoretically, they’ll begin to move through the gears and ease themselves up the table.

There’s plenty of time to do so of course, and news that Wesley Fofana is back working on the grass at Chelsea’s Cobham training base will surely come as a real boost to the club and Pochettino.

Reliable journalist and CaughtOffside columnist, Fabrizio Romano, posted the good news on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday afternoon.

Whilst it isn’t clear how long it will be before Fofana can be considered for selection again, when he does return it will be like having a new signing for the club.

As Romano notes, he is a key man for Pochettino’s future plans for Chelsea and once he’s fit and firing, it’ll be one more piece of the jigsaw in place for the Argentinian, and a step nearer the outfit that he wants to oversee.

Chelsea manager, Mauricio Pochettino, could be forgiven for thinking it’s two steps forward after the Blues win against Tottenham Hotspur, and then one back because of their injury concerns.

The bigger clubs are seemingly able to cover the loss of their stars, and whilst Chelsea are steadily improving, they’re far from the finished article and need the players playing.

A decent showing against Pep Guardiola’s side this coming weekend would not only put the cat amongst the pigeons in terms of showing that Man City are beatable, but it would also strengthen Chelsea’s own aspirations as they look to climb the Premier League table.

They’ll have to try their luck without at least six of their players, however.

According to Premier Injuries, only Armando Broja appears likely to be able to make this weekend’s fixtures.

Definitely ruled out are Wesley Fofana, Ben Chilwell, Romeo Lavia, Christoper Nkunku, Trevoh Chalobah and Carney Chukwuemeka.

There’s still no date for a return for the latter two, whilst Nkunku will hope to be back in contention by the end of November.

Mauricio Pochettino will almost certainly be keen not to make excuses for another disappointing Chelsea performance, this time at Bournemouth, however, with a full XI out injured at present, he could be forgiven for at least acknowledging that he can’t get any sort of stability at present for precisely that reason.

The Blues again looked out of ideas and lethargic for the most part at the Vitality Stadium, and any initial optimism that the west Londoners could do some damage in the Premier League this season has surely evaporated.

Perhaps supporters shouldn’t be too hasty in their assessments, however.

According to talkSPORT, the Stamford Bridge outfit currently have a full XI out of action that’s worth a conservative £370m combined.

Marcus Bettinelli, Trevoh Chalobah, Benoit Badiashile, Wesley Fofana, Reece James, Romeo Lavia, Moises Caicedo, Carney Chukwuemeka, Christopher Nkunku, Armando Broja and Noni Madueke are all sidelined.

Whilst a few of those named might not get straight into the starting XI, it’s a fair bet that more than half of them would do.

Chelsea have reportedly reached an agreement with Monaco to sign defender Axel Disasi.

That’s according to a recent report from The Athletic’s David Ornstein, who has exclusively reported that the Blues have agreed to pay the Ligue 1 side £39 million (€45 million) for Disasi.

The 25-year-old French centre-back will act as a replacement for Wesley Fofana, who, as per the club’s official website, has undergone surgery on a ruptured cruciate ligament. He is expected to miss a large part of next season.

That famous saying of football being a funny old game certainly rings true for one Man United outcast this morning.

As often happens in the game, the trajectories of players can change in the blink of an eye and for a variety of reasons.

New Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has offered his support to defender Wesley Fofana after it was confirmed today that he will face months on the sidelines after suffering a devastating ACL injury.

The French star has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and has undergone surgery this week to begin the first part of his recovery.

This is the third knee injury Fofana has had since joining Chelsea last summer and it is another major one in his young career that will certainly have an impact on its longevity.

Speaking about the setback for Fofana, Pochettino said in a press conference on Tuesday: “Really sad, really bad news. We all feel so sad. All we can do is help him.

Chelsea have confirmed that defender Wesley Fofana will face months on the sidelines after suffering a devastating ACL injury.

The French star has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and has undergone surgery this week to begin the first part of his recovery.

The West London club put out a statement regarding Fofana’s injury on Tuesday and it read: “Defender Wesley Fofana has undergone anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery.

“The 22-year-old did not travel to America for the club’s pre-season tour due to specialist medical assessments, which unfortunately confirmed that an operation would be required.

“Wesley will now begin his recovery and work with the club’s medical department at Cobham during his rehabilitation phase.”

Chelsea will reportedly be ready to explore the market for a potential signing in central defence this summer in case the injury to Wesley Fofana proves serious and keeps him out for a long time.
