Both are young and will develop into even better players than they are now but the problem for Tottenham is the fact that clubs will not want to sell mid-season.

Everton’s financial situation makes the 21-year-old an easier signing but if Spurs want either of the two, they will have to fork out a large chunk of money.

Everton were rocked by a 10-point deduction this week which leaves them in the Premier League’s relegation zone and also with an uncertain future.

The Toffees have been in good form of late so survival shouldn’t be too much of a problem this season for the club as they set about appealing their deduction for breaching Financial Fair Play rules.

Their financial situation at present is unclear and the Sunday Express reports that if Everton need to sell players in January, Man United have their eye on Jarrad Branthwaite and Amadou Onana, who are two of the Merseyside club’s most important players.

Man United have been in the market for a centre-back and a midfielder and it is clear that the Everton stars are on their list for both roles.

The Toffees are unlikely to sell any of their players midseason unless they are forced to but either one, or both, would be good additions to Ten Hag’s squad.

Onana has been a key player for Everton ever since joining the club last season, while Branthwaite has been excellent under Sean Dyche during the current campaign.

That’s according to a recent report from Football Transfers, who claims Eddie Howe has made the Toffees’ centre-back his top defensive target ahead of the winter window.

Although a new midfielder is likely to be top of the Magpies’ agenda following Sandro Tonali’s 10-month suspension for illegal betting activity, a new defender is also needed at St. James’ Park.

Although Branthwaite has been on Everton’s books since 2019, after spending last season out on loan with Dutch side PSV, it has been this campaign that has seen the 21-year-old really breakthrough.

Jarrad Branthwaite has looked exceptional since joining the Toffees in the summer and manager Sean Dyche has hailed the young star.

Joining from Carlisle for just £1 million in 2020, the signing of Branthwaite is looking increasingly more like a bargain after every passing game.

The 21-year-old has formed a great partnership with veteran, James Tarkowski at the heart of Everton’s defence and is considered one of the best young talents in the league.

Branthwaite was pivotal in his side’s 1-1 draw against Brighton on Saturday as many consider him good enough to grab the attention of Gareth Southgate.

Dyche made sure to sing the praises of the English defender, highlighting his ‘assured character’ and physicality.

‘You can never define someone’s character, but even last season speaking to him on the phone a couple of times when I first got here, I could tell he was very level, he was enjoying the experience (on loan at PSV),’ Dyche said via the Daily Mail.

‘He seemed to be quite an assured character, quite a calm character. I like that in all players, but particularly in centre halves. His adaptation has been clear to the pace and the detail of Premier League football. He continues to improve, and physically he is a good specimen.

‘He is playing in front of a very good goalkeeper (Jordan Pickford) and a very good centre half next to him in James Tarkowski, which I think helps as well. Youngy was playing next to him too, an older head speaking to him all the time, so these are the things which improve you.

‘But a lot of credit to him for taking it on himself by the way. The main focus for him is keep doing what you’re doing. He’s enjoying it.’

The latest Premier League team of the week is in, and it’s unsurprisingly dominated by Manchester City after they enjoyed a convincing 3-0 win away to rivals Manchester United in Sunday’s Manchester Derby.

The reigning champions were a level above Man Utd on the day, with Erling Haaland scoring twice and Phil Foden bagging the other, leading to Garth Crooks to naming as many as four players from Pep Guardiola’s side in his team of the week in his BBC Sport column.

Ederson, Haaland, Kyle Walker and Bernardo Silva are the four City players to make it in, and it’s hard to argue with that choice as they dominate the full XI, as you can see below…

Elsewhere, Arsenal’s hat-trick hero Eddie Nketiah is an obvious pick after a superb performance in the Gunners’ 5-0 thrashing of Sheffield United, while Micky van de Ven put in another fine display as Tottenham continued their superb recent form.

John Aldridge believes Jurgen Klopp should try to sign Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

Liverpool faced off against their city rivals Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Klopp’s side looked the better team in the early stages of the game but Everton didn’t shy away from the challenge.

Unfortunately for the Toffee’s, Ashley Young received a second yellow card for a late tackle on Luis Diaz right before the second half.

It was mainly one-way traffic from that point on with Mohamed Salah clinching the victory with a late brace.

Speaking in his column with the Liverpool Echo, Aldridge highlighted Branthwaite as his stand-out player and urged his former side to sign him.

‘I don’t want to upset any Evertonians by saying this, and whether Liverpool would buy from Everton is another matter as it rarely happens, but I certainly think he has got the ability to go on and become a leading figure and a starter for England.

‘The fact Jurgen Klopp even talked him up before the game in his pre-match press conference was interesting.

‘He is likely to be on the radar of other teams as well, Manchester United have already been mentioned as a possible destination, but it’s up to Everton over what they do with him.

‘A left-sided centre-back is something we were in the market for during the summer transfer window, which we didn’t end up signing in the end. If we were to make a move for Branthwaite, he would probably cost a significant amount due to the English premium that we so often see in the game.’

Manchester United transfer rumours are often leading stories, but that doesn’t mean they’re always accurate, with Fabrizio Romano taking to his exclusive Daily Briefing column today to set the record straight on one player being linked with the Red Devils at the moment.

Having recently reported that Man Utd were likely to be in the market for a new centre-back in 2024, Romano insists it’s still the three players he previously mentioned who are likely to be on the club’s agenda, with no further updates since he named Antonio Silva, Edmond Tapsoba and Jean-Clair Todibo as being on the Red Devils’ radar.

However, there have also been stories about Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite being on United’s list of targets, with Romano shutting down those rumours in today’s column on Substack.

“Jarrad Branthwaite – The Everton defender has been the subject of rumours linking him with Manchester United, but while they want a CB in 2024 my understanding remains that the three main names being considered are Antonio Silva, Jean-Clair Todibo and Edmond Tapsoba,” Romano said.

And although Everton underperformed as a collective last time out and suffered a 2-1 defeat against Premier League new boys Luton Town, Branthwaite, prior to last weekend’s game, earned an above 7 out of 10 match rating on Sofa Score in all of his last three games, including against Mikel Arteta’s title-contending Arsenal last month.

Now eager to tie the 21-year-old down on new and improved terms, Everton are thought to be readying a contract extension offer in the hope of fending off mounting interest from some of the country’s biggest clubs, including Manchester United, who have a long-standing interest in the defender.

As it currently stands, Branthwaite has less than two years left on his deal but if Everton get their way the former PSV loanee will be sticking around Goodison Park for a lot longer than that.

AC Milan

AC Milan have scheduled new meeting with Olivier Giroud agents to extend the contract — current one expires in June.

Everton asked about Giroud on Deadline Day, MLS clubs also wanted him but there was no way to negotiate: he’s a crucial player for AC Milan.

Arsenal

Arsenal’s priority for the summer is Declan Rice and they look to be leading the race for his signature at the moment, as per Ben Jacobs’ exclusive column here.

Atlanta United

Official, confirmed: Atlanta United have signed Giorgios Giakoumakis as new striker on a permanent deal from Celtic. Three year deal with option confirmed, £4.3m fee to Celtic — deal hijacked as he was set to join Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds.

Bayern Munich

Joao Cancelo recently joined Bayern Munich on loan

Bayern director Hasan Salihamidzic: “We have received a Deadline bid for Pavard but we don’t want, can’t do without him. It was attractive financially, but sporting aspect comes first.”

My understanding is that the Benjamin Pavard proposal was NOT from Barcelona, as they want Pavard as a target for the summer.

FC Bayern have not paid any loan fee to Manchester City for Joao Cancelo. No money invested to sign him on loan in January, there’s just €70m buy option clause for June, which is not mandatory.

Chelsea

Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell is one of the players who has been appreciated by Manchester City for years. For sure he’s one of the LB to consider, but I’m told not the only one. They will have a shortlist of players in that position and will decide how to proceed together with Pep in May/June.

Chelsea are speaking to Lewis Hall representatives, new contract has been discussed. It’s not completed yet but it’s one of the new deal in talks alongside N’Golo Kante and especially Thiago Silva, main priority.

As for Conor Gallagher, I think the second part of the season will be crucial to determine his future, but nothing has been decided yet, with deals for the likes of Kante and Silva the club’s main priority at the moment.

My understanding is that Chelsea feel there will be no issues to get a work permit for Andrey Santos. The process is very advanced — as club remains confident to receive the green light soon. Chelsea’s plan has always been to include Andrey in the squad instead of loaning him out to Brazilian clubs.

AS Roma director Tiago Pinto: “Hakim Ziyech was one of our targets, we had talks with his agents and Chelsea but the deal collapsed.”

Galatasaray

It’s finally official – Nicolo Zaniolo has signed as new Galatasaray player, now confirmed by AS Roma statement. He’s signed a four-year contract with his new club, who paid an initial €16.5m fee with €13m potential add-ons. He also has a €35m release clause.

Hoffenheim

Official. Pellegrino Matarazzo has been appointed as new Hoffenheim head coach, return completed. Matarazzo signs until June 2025.

Despite rumours, I’m not aware of any contact or negotiation for Tammy Abraham on Manchester United side, at the moment. I think we will hear many names around Man Utd, every day we have Vlahovic, Kane, Sesko, Osimhen, Abraham… but the reality is that decision time will not be February or March.

I’ve been asked by fans about links with Everton youngster Jarrad Branthwaite, but I’m not aware of this at this stage. He’s doing great but Manchester United have different priorities, then scouts of top clubs are always around Europe and so it’s normal to have this kind of links.

Erik ten Hag: “I’m here to build a long-term project, not just for one year. I think our summer plans, we have an idea on the long-term plans. You will also look two-three windows ahead. But also, you have to revisit that plan because of developments.”
