Things have really gone from bad to worse for Timo Werner at RB Leipzig, the former Chelsea forward enduring a nightmare in the 2023/24 season.

WhoScored note he has just two goals across the whole campaign so far, and his place at RB Leipzig this season has often been taken by the likes of Benjamin Sesko and even Xavi Simons.

The only realistic option for the former Chelsea flop, now 27 years of age, is a move away, and as 90Min note, he has apparently been offered to the Premier League and that Fulham, Crystal Palace and West Ham are interested in his services.

However, that information doesn’t tally with that of transfer expert and CaughtOffside columnist, Fabrizio Romano.

“Despite rumours, I have to say no, honestly, I didn’t hear that he’s being offered to other clubs,” he said when speaking to CaughtOffside for his exclusive Daily Briefing column.

“Some Premier League clubs have asked about his situation as it’s not an easy time for him at Leipzig, but I don’t have any confirmation yet on club names as it’s purely early stages, nothing concrete yet.”

Of course, things can and often do change, and if Werner wants to kick-start his fading career, then leaving Leipzig would appear to be the only option available to him at this moment.

Seemingly devoid of confidence in front of goal, the German international needs to find a club where his skill set is perfectly complimentary to that which said club already has in situ.

One of the most natural and feared goal scorers when he was at Leipzig first time around, things have gradually got worse for Werner.

However, he’s still got plenty of time to reverse the narrative.

Ahead of the January transfer window, West Ham like many clubs across Europe will be assessing the options, and it appears that a former Chelsea flop could be of interest to the Irons.

One area where the Hammers have struggled this season is up front. Their total of 21 Premier League goals scored in 13 games is the second worst of the top 10 teams in the English top-flight.

Most of those goals have come from midfield as the club’s two main strikers, Michail Antonio and Danny Ings, have managed just two between them all season – both from Antonio – according to WhoScored.

Whether or not they make it to the knockout stages of the Europa League, it’s abundantly clear that David Moyes needs to bring in a striker with proven pedigree to help West Ham attack the second half of the campaign.

David Moyes needs a striker with a proven pedigree at West Ham

To that end, it makes no sense as to why they’ve a watching brief on Chelsea flop and current RB Leipzig man, Timo Werner.

The 27-year-old has managed a paltry two goals in 234 minutes of action this season per WhoScored – hardly likely to enthuse the London Stadium faithful.

90Min suggest that London rivals Crystal Palace and Fulham are both interested in a loan for a player that has, apparently, been hawked around to a number of Premier League sides.

West Ham’s interest hasn’t stretched that far – yet, though European football could swing any deal for them if and when Werner becomes available and assuming the east Londoners want to get a deal done.

Crystal Palace chairman, Steve Parish, and manager, Roy Hodgson, are unlikely to be too enamoured by learning that one of their strikers is looking at moving on from the club in the not too distant future.

The Eagles haven’t been soaring as high as they’d like of late, however, having secured the longer-term futures of both Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise recently, as well as having the likes of Marc Guehi and other highly-rated exponents in their ranks, they’ve lots to be thankful for.

A young and vibrant team, it’s difficult to see why players would be so keen to move on, though Odsonne Edouard has expressed a clear preference to leave Selhurst Park – via Paris Saint-Germain’s official website.

“I try to give the best version of myself every time I step onto a pitch,” he said.

“Making the supporters at Selhurst Park proud is my goal. It is by achieving successful performances that I could aspire to join one of the biggest European clubs.

“I strive to become a striker that matters on the European scene. It is therefore important to have a great season with the Eagles.”

The 25-year-old spent part of his youth at the French giants, and you’d be forgiven for thinking that he was giving PSG the old ‘come and get me’ plea.

Having his words reported by another club’s website rather than a national media outlet is hardly likely to endear him to his paymasters either, and may well signal the beginning of the end for Edouard’s career in south London.

With six goals in 12 total appearances this season per WhoScored, it’s obvious what he brings to the table, however, you simply can’t be hinting on another club’s website that you intend to leave your current club in future.

Crystal Palace will have been delighted to have tied down Eberechi Eze to a new contract after doing so with Michael Olise, and the Eagles now need to concentrate on getting Marc Guehi to do the same.

The England international defender appears to be coveted by a number of clubs, however, Palace chairman, Steve Parish, is doing his level best to really help build something special at Selhurst Park.

The south Londoners have some of the brightest young English talents in their squad, and whilst Roy Hodgson is still doing a remarkable job as manager, assuming this is his last season in football, whomever Parish brings in for 2024/25 could have an effect on the playing staff.

After all, it’s clear Palace don’t want to lose Guehi.

‘Guehi has always been appreciated by many top English clubs,’ CaughtOffside columnist, Fabrizio Romano, wrote in his exclusive Daily Briefing.

‘No concrete bids or talks are taking place at the moment, he’s a key player for Palace and of course they want to keep him.

‘It’s quiet now around Guehi, but with many PL clubs looking for a new centre-back, he could be a name to watch in 2024.’

Having so many homegrown players in their first-team squad and starting XI does Palace great credit.

Not only does it mean that they have a strong English core, but it offers those youngsters coming through at Palace’s academy a genuine belief that if they’re able to hit the heights required, that Crystal Palace will give them a crack at the big time.

That motivating factor will be a God send for Parish and his board, who appear keen to continue with the current business and playing status quo in the hope that the Eagles soar in the not too distant future.

With just 10 goals to their name this season, Crystal Palace are the third worst scorers in the Premier League in 2023/24.

Only Fulham, Bournemouth, Burnley and Sheffield United have a worst record, and three of those four are in the relegation places.

It’s therefore blindingly obvious as to where the Eagles problems lay.

With seven weeks to go until the January transfer window opens for business, it means that Palace have got to get through another nine games before they’ve any hope of acquiring a striker that might be able to plunder the goals that they need to haul themselves up the table.

One player that they are interested in according to 90Min is RB Salzburg’s Karim Konate. According to WhoScored, he already has eight goals in 13 Austrian Bundesliga games.

Perhaps that’s why Palace are likely to face stiff competition from many of their London rivals should the player become available for transfer.

90Min suggest that Tottenham, Arsenal and West Ham have all scouted him recently, so it’s clearly not going to be an easy negotiation for whichever club wants to secure his services.

Palace’s need is clearly the most acute, however, it isn’t clear at this stage whether Konate is open to their overtures or not.

Crystal Palace can consider themselves unlucky to have lost a tense London derby against Tottenham last time out, though it’s perhaps the inability to get across the line in the biggest games that has seen one their players signal an intent to leave the club.

At present, Roy Hodgson’s side find themselves in 13th place, amongst a clutch of clubs on 12 points.

They are only five points from sixth placed Newcastle United, and it’s the Magpies that are interested in wantaway defender, Joachim Andersen, according to TeamTalk.

Whilst it’s understandable that every player wants to better themselves, the Eagles have shown under Hodgson that, on their day, they are as capable as anyone else.

Perhaps Newcastle’s fast moving and upward trajectory is what is attracting the 28-year-old and, rather than let the train leave the station, he wants to hop aboard, even if he’s putting the ball in Palace’s court.

“It is clear that this summer I will be 28 years old. It is limited how much money clubs will spend on a 28-year-old, or, if it is for next year, a 29-year-old, so it will have to be soon if something is to happen,” the defender said to BOLD.

“Of course I would like to take a step up, but it is not up to me. I am doing my part to take a step up. All players want to play at the highest level possible and ultimately it is up to the sporting directors to make those choices. I can’t do that much. I’m happy to be at Palace and I have a big role, so that’s what I spend time on.

“The Champions League is always great. I played it in Lyon and got a taste for it. It’s clear that the Champions League is one of the coolest things.”

With rumours that defensive partner, Marc Guehi, could also be the target of other interested parties, it’s difficult to believe that Palace chairman, Steve Parish, would countenance allowing both players to leave.

There’s still plenty of time for the situation to change before the transfer window opens for business in the new year, and Andersen may yet be tempted to stay at Selhurst Park rather than follow Wilfried Zaha’s lead.

Crystal Palace manager, Roy Hodgson, has been torn off a strip by talkSPORT pundit, Gabby Agbonlahor, relating to the 76-year-old’s post-match interview after the Tottenham game at the weekend.

The Eagles were unable to stop Ange Postecoglou’s side from taking all three points and go five points clear ahead of the rest of the weekend’s matches, and Hodgson wasn’t impressed with his young substitutes.

“There was no disappointment today. Although, maybe the young substitutes — who we like to think we can believe in and help us to a different level — didn’t show that,” Hodgson had said, quoted by the Evening Standard.

“They didn’t do anything for us at all, really. We became much weaker when I made the substitutions.”

That clearly didn’t sit well with Agbonlahor who ranted about it and questioned Hodgson’s motivational tactics live on the radio.

“I don’t like it one bit. I was watching the game as well. I was watching Will Hughes and I’m seeing nothing. I was watching Edouard, who’s been decent this season, didn’t show anything,” he said.

“To hammer three young lads who have come on… they’re inexperienced. You can’t blame that result on those three young lads who come on. 17 appearances between them. They’re still new to this big time football.

“What about the players you had on? Your experienced players? They done nothing all game. Spurs found it easy for me. Roy Hodgson, it’s a major blunder hammering these three young lads.

“In this game now, you’ve got to support these young lads. He should apologise to all three. If I’m their agents, I’m going in to the owner Steve Parish and saying, what’s going on here? You don’t batter young players like that.”

Roy Hodgson took charge of his 500th game as a manager of an English side on Friday night, but any celebrations would’ve been cut short by Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 win at Selhurst Park.

The Eagles have been a revelation under the former England coach, the elder statesman amongst Premier League managers at 76 years of age.

It’s clear to anyone that Hodgson’s love of the game is still intact, as is his desire to continue working with talented, young players.

One of those is Eberechi Eze, who as the Evening Standard report, was the subject of a failed £60m bid from Man City in the summer.

Given that transfermarkt have pinned his value at €48m (£41m), that’s some game of brinksmanship being played by Steve Parish and the Palace board.

In any event, the report in the Evening Standard suggests that Palace are no confident that the player will sign a new deal with them.

As there are just a few small details to iron out, it’s possible that any deal could be announced in the near future.

That would surely be Hodgson’s hope as he looks to continue building a squad that the next manager can inherit and take forward.

With a number of international players in situ, Palace are in a great place at present and Hodgson has certainly played his part in that.

Though they’re having a reasonable 2023/24 campaign, Crystal Palace will, like their Premier League opponents, be looking to improve their squad in the January transfer window.

Some well thought out signings half way through a campaign can often be the difference for a team having a good season or a great one.

Roy Hodgson should be happy enough with the Eagles current ninth place showing.

The south Londoners are just a point and a position behind Saturday’s opponents, Newcastle United, and only five points off the top four.

If Palace can put a little run together, there’s no reason why European football should be beyond them next season.

Before then, keeping pace in the English top-flight will be the priority and, according to TeamTalk, Palace are one of a clutch of Premier League clubs that are looking to swoop for the Championship’s best player in September, Sunderland winger, Jack Clarke.

The outlet note that Clarke, who has represented England at U20 level, has already scored seven goals in 11 games and is the Championship’s joint top-scorer.

It’s therefore no wonder that Burnley, Brentford, Wolves and Bournemouth are also circling for the player’s services.

To that end, Palace may have a job on their hands to secure Clarke, however, owner Steve Parish will at least want to be in the conversation as and when Sunderland are ready to talk business.
