Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly both on alert for the potential transfer of Everton midfielder Amadou Onana, who is seen as a sellable asset.

This is according to a report from talkSPORT, who state that Onana’s Everton future could be in some doubt due to the Toffees’ financial issues.

The Belgian midfielder has performed well in his time at Goodison Park and looks like he could surely do a job at a top club like Man Utd or Chelsea.

Erik ten Hag would certainly do well to bring in a long-term replacement for the ageing and out-of-form Casemiro, while Chelsea are perhaps less in need of a player of this profile after the recent signings of the likes of Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia.

Amadou Onana is being linked with Chelsea and Manchester United

Still, if Everton are forced to sell players to ease their financial woes this winter, it makes sense that top clubs like United and Chelsea would start to show an interest in a potential bargain.

Onana may well feel he’s good enough to make the next step up in his career soon, and he might not be the only one eager to get out of Everton as their recent points deduction puts them in serious danger of relegation this season.

Everton were rocked by a 10-point deduction this week which leaves them in the Premier League’s relegation zone and also with an uncertain future.

The Toffees have been in good form of late so survival shouldn’t be too much of a problem this season for the club as they set about appealing their deduction for breaching Financial Fair Play rules.

Their financial situation at present is unclear and the Sunday Express reports that if Everton need to sell players in January, Man United have their eye on Jarrad Branthwaite and Amadou Onana, who are two of the Merseyside club’s most important players.

Man United have been in the market for a centre-back and a midfielder and it is clear that the Everton stars are on their list for both roles.

The Toffees are unlikely to sell any of their players midseason unless they are forced to but either one, or both, would be good additions to Ten Hag’s squad.

Onana has been a key player for Everton ever since joining the club last season, while Branthwaite has been excellent under Sean Dyche during the current campaign.

The Everton boss has a harder job of keeping his side in the Premier League for next season following their points deduction and he will not want to make it tougher by losing important players.

Everton supporters are worried about the fitness of Amadou Onana after the midfielder withdrew from the Belgium national squad.

The 22-year-old has been one of Sean Dyche’s most reliable performers this season and given their current circumstances, an injury could be detrimental to their upcoming games.

Onana reportedly left the Belgium national team after picking up a calf injury and will not play a part in his team’s EURO 2024 Qualifier against Azerbaijan on Sunday.

The Everton midfielder was also not part of the matchday squad that won against Serbia on Wednesday night.

The severity of the injury is yet to be revealed and Evertonians will be praying that he will be fit enough to face Manchester United immediately after the international break.

The towering midfielder has had an issue with his calf already this season and was forced to miss his side’s last game against Brighton because of it.

Dyche revealed after the game that it was ‘a niggly calf that’s been annoying’ but that ‘it’s not a drastic one.’

Toffee fans will hope that it’s only a precaution as they need a fully fit squad now more than ever after being hit with a 10-point deduction by the Premier League.

With Sandro Tonali’s 10-month ban for illegal betting recently confirmed, Newcastle United’s priority is to get cover in midfield during the January transfer window.

Any move is going to have to be considered carefully given that the club have to keep within the bounds of Financial Fair Play, and it isn’t clear how much wiggle room the Magpies have in that regard.

Thus far, Eddie Howe and his backroom team have worked incredibly well alongside the Saudi Public Investment Fund and sporting director, Dan Ashworth, and there’s nothing to suggest that whomever replaces Tonali won’t again be a joint effort between the various areas of the business.

According to inews (subscription required), one of the players that is potentially under consideration is Everton’s dynamic 22-year-old Amadou Onana.

Though he may not be the favourite at this point in time, and there’s no indication that Everton would welcome an approach in any event, it does seem as though he is on the list.

He’s a player that would clearly get the thumbs up from former legend and arguably Newcastle’s greatest ever striker, Alan Shearer.

‘A real powerhouse performance. He led by example at the heart of Everton’s midfield,’ he wrote on the official Premier League website for his Team of the Week.

With two months still to go before the transfer window opens in any event, there’s plenty that can happen in the meantime, and Onana may move up or slip down the list dependant on a number of factors including injury and form.

In many respects the January transfer window can’t come soon enough for Newcastle United.

Sandro Tonali’s absence from the Magpies midfield would be expected to cause difficulties for the club, not to mention that, should the club still be in the Champions League and pushing hard in the Premier League, Eddie Howe would surely want to strengthen what he already has in squad terms.

It’s perhaps with that in mind that inews (subscription required) are reporting that the north east giants are considering Everton powerhouse midfielder, Amadou Onana, as a potential replacement for Tonali.

The Toffees are unlikely to take too kindly to any approach from one of their most hard-working players, but given their current predicament both on and off the pitch, there’s a strong likelihood that they wouldn’t be able to rebuff any reasonable offer if it came in.

Onana’s hire would certainly shake things up a bit in the Magpies midfield and give it even more drive and desire.

Always on the front foot and ready to press at any given moment from first minute to last, the 22-year-old Senegalese is precisely the type of player to execute the style of play that Howe desires.

Though any move is a long way from being concluded at this point, it’s certainly one to watch over the next couple of months.

So far, so good in the summer transfer window for Man United, Erik ten Hag landing all of his major targets thus far.

The Dutchman’s definitive stance over players he wants moved on and others brought in appears to have served the club well, though one or two more before the window slams shut on September 1 wouldn’t go amiss.

It’s believed that Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat could be the next one in through the doors at Old Trafford, though one other name has recently caught the attention.

Everton star, Amadou Onana, no relation to United keeper, Andre, has been linked with the Red Devils, but as the Liverpool ECHO note, Sean Dyche rates his player higher than Romeo Lavia who has agreed a £60m move from Southampton to Chelsea.

It’s not clear whether Old Trafford officials would sanction a deal at that price but in any event, the Liverpool ECHO understands that there has been no enquiry from Man United for the player at this stage.

With two and a half weeks to go until the end of the current transfer window, it’s entirely possible that a late window move could be made, though much is likely to depend on how well the Red Devils play over the next couple of games.

A win against Wolverhampton Wanderers in their opening Premier League fixture of 2023/24 wasn’t without its problems, and that may tempt the powers that be to accede to a bid should ten Hag decide Onana is worth pursuing.

Manchester United have reportedly approached Everton over the potential transfer of midfielder Amadou Onana.

The talented 21-year-old impressed at Goodison Park last season and is being eyed up by Erik ten Hag now as he seeks to add more height to his squad, according to the Guardian.

Onana could replace Scott McTominay at Old Trafford if this move goes through, as the report adds that United are asking for £45m to let the Scotland international leave this summer.

If MUFC do end up upgrading their midfield with Onana at a net cost of just £5m that would surely go down as great business for the club.

Amadou Onana to Manchester United?

While McTominay has done fairly well as a squad player for United down the years, it’s hard to imagine him really elevating his game much further, or taking this team to the next level.

Onana, by contrast, is still young enough to improve further and become a truly elite player in his position for years to come.

It would surely be a big blow for Everton to lose him, and one imagines they could possibly get a bit more than £50m for him if they really pushed for it.

Once Declan Rice’s move to Arsenal has been signed off West Ham can set about rebuilding their squad, and the east Londoners are going to target an England international currently plying his trade at Man United amongst others.

Getting in £100m for one player is sensational business by the east Londoners, and however important Rice has been for the club, if David Moyes can bring in the signings he wants, there’s no doubt that West Ham will be the better for it.

According to the Daily Mirror, Moyes is looking at bringing in Amadou Onana from Everton to shore up the midfield, but he isn’t the only star who could be making their way to the London Stadium this summer.

Harry Maguire

Man United’s defensive flop, Harry Maguire, is another who is on Moyes’ hit list, and a move down south will surely be of benefit for a player who needs to restore some confidence.

As he’s shown for England, Maguire isn’t a bad defender, far from it, he just doesn’t suit Erik ten Hag’s system at Old Trafford.

The Hammers might not even stop there, with the Daily Mirror also indicating that they could go after the likes of Kalvin Phillips, James Ward-Prowse, Joao Palhinha and Denis Zakaria.

Clearly, they won’t buy all of those mentioned, and their clubs may play hard ball with any sale fee knowing that West Ham have cash to burn, but it’s still a good position for the east Londoners to be in as they approach a season that will include another European sojourn.

Everton stayed in the Premier League by the skin of their teeth last season with a final day win, and Sean Dyche needs to be on alert ahead of the new season as it appears that Man United could be sniffing around one of his stars.

Both the Toffees and the Red Devils are in transition at the moment but for entirely different reasons.

Everton have had a switch around at board level but essentially much the same senior staff are being kept on to help the club move seamlessly into a new stadium near the Liverpool docks.

Man United are in limbo somewhat, as takeover talks that have been ongoing for more than seven months are still showing no sign of being completed.

That’s unlikely to stop Erik ten Hag at least enquiring as to the availability of certain players and, once there’s a confirmed transfer war chest available, discussions can progress.

According to Dean Jones, writing for Give Me Sport, Everton’s Amadou Onana, is the player of interest to United.

At this stage it seems that reports are being gathered on the player and no more according to Jones, however, the fact that the Old Trafford outfit are doing some digging would suggest that there’s a possibility the £100,000 per week (per Spotrac) star could swap Merseyside for Manchester in due course.

At one stage of the current Premier League campaign, West Ham appeared to be in danger of being relegated given that they couldn’t seem to buy a win from anywhere.

Fortunately for all concerned, David Moyes managed to ensure the team got the points they required thanks to a late season mini-revival.

The same can’t be said for Everton who have endured an horrific 2022/23 season.

With a new stadium being built in the Liverpool docks area, the Toffees really need to remain an English top-flight side, but they’ve looked anything but for long periods of the current campaign.

They go into the final game of the season knowing that their immediate future is in their own hands, though that’s also no guarantee of success.

Were Everton unable to beat Bournemouth and both Leeds United and Leicester City win their games against Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United respectively, they would fall through the trap door at the last possible moment with no hope of a reprieve.

Jordan Pickford to West Ham?

Should that precise situation occur, then it would be expected that a number of first-team stars would leave the Goodison Park outfit.

Two of those will interest the Hammers according to Ex-WHU Employee who was speaking on the West Ham Way podcast.

“There is also some interest in Jordan Pickford and Amadou Onana should Everton drop,” he said.

“As well as the likes of Ward-Prowse and Romeo Lavia from Southampton and Jack Harrison from Leeds.

”We are also looking at a few young players who are on the fringes of top clubs such as  Cole Palmer at Manchester City and Reiss Neilson of Arsenal.”

Sean Dyche’s men will almost certainly feel the pressure and Sunday will be the time for his charges to stand up and be counted.

The future of their club depends on one big performance.
