Fulham have long been linked with Stuttgart’s Serhou Guirassy but it could be fellow Premier League outfit Newcastle that win the race for his signature.

Christian Falk notes that the Magpies ‘are on the table’ for the Guinean with a release clause of £15.2m.

“Serhou Guirassy is already aware that he can make a move in January as he has a release clause of €17.5m that can be activated at this time,” the head of football at BILD wrote in his exclusive column with CaughtOffside.

“VFB Stuttgart is still fighting for him, but it’s not a lot of money! Not much for the Premier League certainly.

“In the summer, we already mentioned about his opportunity to go to the UK amid interest from Fulham but he didn’t, as he wanted a better opportunity. I’m not sure Fulham is the right club.

“Newcastle United are on the table and might be a more attractive option as a Champions League club.

“We’ll have to see if he’s still playing for Stuttgart until the summer or if he capitalises on his release clause in the winter. It’s just a question of the offer and Newcastle would be a fine deal for Guirassy.”

The 27-year-old has been in impeccable form this term, registering 18 goal contributions (16 goals, two assists) in 10 games this term.

For such a low release clause, one might imagine there may be a few takers in the English top-flight alone come the opening of the January window.

With Newcastle low on firepower – owing to injuries to Alexander Isak (groin), Harvey Barnes (foot) and Callum Wilson (hamstring) – one might imagine Eddie Howe will feel inclined to strengthen his forward department when possible.

In a battle with Marco Silva’s Fulham, it appears likely that the top four hopefuls’ Champions League stats could issue them with the upper hand.

Anthony Gordon was perhaps a disappointing signing for Newcastle fans following his switch from Everton, though may very well continue to benefit from strong support amongst the coaching staff.

The Athletic (via Geordie Boot Boys) now reports that the England U21s star impressed in training, with particular emphasis being placed on the player’s fitness.

Assuming that the 22-year-old can build on an extremely positive post-season, in which he played a key role in the national side lifting the U21s European Championship trophy, there’s no question that the player can start building a more positive relationship with the fanbase.

Newcastle are now in the frame when it comes to Youssoufa Moukoko’s next potential move.

The Magpies are understood to be open to the prospect of landing the highly-rated youngster (on 12 goal contributions so far this term) as a free agent in the summer should Borussia Dortmund fail to strike an agreement on fresh terms.

“Newcastle are, indeed, involved in the race and have shown Moukoko a plan for his future. They want to invest in young players and free agents,” Christian Falk exclusively revealed to CaughtOffside in his latest Substack briefing.

“The most important thing for Moukoko is playing time and he knows he can get it at Dortmund but he also sees an opportunity, in that respect, with Newcastle.

Chelsea and Christopher Vivell also represent a very nice opportunity but they’re also looking at another striker in Thuram. The chance to play there isn’t as promising as it is in Dortmund or Newcastle, so this could be an influential point as far as any potential decision is concerned. The door for Dortmund is slightly more open now, as the agents also want to earn some money.

He’s a very young player, he hasn’t seen much of the world, so changing leagues can seem a little daunting. In the end, however, it’s a question of money, so if the agent says the offer on the table isn’t respectful, that will also have an impact.”

It’s understood that Eddie Howe’s men are attempting to keep in line with financial fair play regulations, so a move for one of Europe’s hottest stars on a free transfer would certainly represent a phenomenal piece of business.

Newcastle do currently find themselves in the Champions League spots – and there’s no question how significant the availability of premier European football would be when it comes to attracting signings in the summer – though it remains to be seen whether their current form can be maintained into the second-half of the campaign.

For now, it seems Dortmund have the right of first refusal as far as contract negotiations are concerned and certainly have a fine catalogue of examples to showcase when it comes to enhancing a player’s pathway to the elite.

In England with the Toon, of course, one could reasonably guarantee that Moukoko would get all the playing time he desires, if a switch to the English top-flight doesn’t prove too intimidating at this stage of his career.

Marcus Thuram will not be joining Newcastle in the January transfer window, as has been exclusively revealed by Christian Falk in his exclusive column for CaughtOffside.

There is the possibility that Gladbach’s resolve could be tested, however, should a ‘big offer’ be supplied.

“Newcastle’s interest in Marcus Thuram was serious, that’s true. They decided already in this window that they won’t go to Newcastle,” the reporter said.

“Everyone has to see what happened with Newcastle, nobody knows if they’ll get Champions League football.

“From Thuram’s side, they made a plan and decided to stay at Gladbach for the moment. If there’s a big offer, it has to come from a very big club – United is one of them, Bayern is one, Inter Milan and PSG.

“These four clubs are in their head. If they bring a good offer and Gladbach says ‘okay, for this money we have to sell him because we’ll lose him anyway’ they will do it.

“He won’t sign now at Newcastle as he’ll have so many options in the summer. But if one of these four clubs is knocking on his door then things could progress quickly.”

Following Cristiano Ronaldo’s high-profile exit from Manchester United in the aftermath of a bridge-burning interview with Piers Morgan, Dean Jones told Give Me Sport that the Frenchman is viewed as a ‘feasible’ replacement for the now Al-Nassr star.

Newcastle’s takeover has granted them access to a higher-quality pool of talent, though it’s interesting to note that the third-placed outfit in the Premier League has been more than patient with its involvement in the transfer market.

Such an approach appears to have paid dividends for Eddie Howe’s men with the Englishman getting the best out of former perceived flop Joelinton whilst moves like the £40m transfer of Bruno Guimaraes have quietly bolstered the club.

Thuram could take the Magpies’ forward line to the next level, though it seems an unlikely move for the side as things currently stand.

Journalist Ross Gregory is worried that Newcastle United’s record-signing Alexander Isak injury is taking too long to recover from.

Isak, 23, joined the Toon in the summer but despite being their most expensive player after leaving Real Sociedad in a deal worth a whopping £65m, the Sweden international has barely featured.

After picking up a very unfortunate injury, the 23-year-old managed just three appearances before being sidelined. Injuring himself all the way back in October, Isak has missed a total of nine games, and Gregory feels this is a concern.

Speaking on the NUFC Matters YouTube channel, Gregory said: “The fact that he didn’t play in the friendly and did some training off by himself still, it’s just a little bit of a concern that it hasn’t cleared up quite as quickly as possible.

“The way Eddie Howe was speaking, it was along the lines of he might not be fit for Bournemouth, he might not be fit for the Leicester game on Boxing Day.

“I think they are going to ease him back in very, very slowly and make sure that he is absolutely 100% right, but there’s obviously something there that’s not quite progressed as well as what they’d hoped to, because it has a long spell that he’s been out, now.”

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has named the title contender for this season’s Premier League title campaign.

His side currently sit on top of the Premier League table after a last-gasp winner from Erling Haaland secured all three points against Fulham at the Etihad on Saturday.

However, a win from Arsenal, who face Chelsea at 12 pm on Sunday would  demote City to second place. The Gunners have lost only one game this season and picked up 31 points out of a possible 36.

Guardiola and his team are looking to claim their third consecutive Premier League title, a record that has only been achieved by their derby rivals Manchester United.

Guardiola names contenders

When speaking to Football Daily, Guardiola listed his biggest challengers in contention for the lucrative trophy. He said: “I would say Arsenal, Man City, Chelsea, Newcastle, Tottenham, United and I would say Liverpool as well. I think these teams can fight for the title.”

All eyes have been (and will likely continue to be) on Newcastle United and their potential transfer activity following PIF’s sensational takeover of the Tyneside-based outfit.

One player that has been linked with an early switch to the newly wealthy club has been Lyon’s Lucas Paquetá.

According to Foot Mercato (via Sport Witness), Eddie Howe’s side had been prepared to back up their interest with cold hard cash – specifically a salary of €850,000 per month to convince the Brazilian to trade France for the English top-flight.

A dejected Eddie Howe trudges off the Anfield pitch following a 3-1 defeat against Liverpool.

It’s a reality that money can only do so much to hide for potential targets, with the Premier League outfit set to learn a harsher lesson to the one previously faced by the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City – particularly in light of their threatened status.

Regardless, it will be difficult to tear the transfer spotlight away from St. James’ Park as the calendar tiptoes ever nearer to the opening of the January transfer window.

Signings remain a possibility for clubs as some begin to shake off the financial ramifications of the pandemic, though question marks will remain over Newcastle’s ability to strengthen from a position of weakness.

WOW – Newcastle have just 13 outfield players fit against Arsenal

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle boss John Carver has told club insiders that several of the first team squad will be allowed to leave as the club try to make room for a plethora of new signings in the summer.

31 year old Williamson, who joined the Toon from Portsmouth six years ago, has made 150 starts for the club during his spell on Tyneside. Despite that, he has often been targeted by supporters for poor performances and was directly at fault for Arsenal’s second last weekend.

It is thought Newcastle will look to 17 year old Charlton centre back Joe Gomez to replace him. Gomez is widely considered to be one of the best youngsters outside the top flight and has been a regular for the London-based club this season.
