Fabrizio Romano has reported that Joao Palhinha is still on Bayern Munich’s list for January, with director Freund stating “of course he’s still on our radar!”.

Palhinha was targeted by Bayern in the summer, however a failed move on deadline day saw the midfielder return to Fulham, with the deal collapsing at the final hurdle.

Bayern Munich are currently 2nd in the Bundesliga with 29 points, two points behind 1st placed Bayer Leverkusen. Both clubs are unbeaten in the Bundesliga after 11 games, however Bayern Munich have won nine and drawn two, whilst Leverkusen have won 10 and only drawn one.

If the positions stay the same going into January, this could convince Bayern even more to dip into the market and acquire the midfielder they wanted this summer.

Palhinha has made 12 appearances for Fulham this season in all competitions, scoring two goals and totalling 1,005 minutes of football.

Fulham are currently 16th in the Premier League on 12 points, but do sit six points off of the drop, with Luton in 18th place on six points.

With Palhinha being a key player for Fulham, this could mean that his price tag rises in the January window due to his importance in survival in the Premier League, and having to replace him mid season.

Only Xabi Alonso’s epic start with Bayern Leverkusen this season is keeping Bayern Munich from riding high at the top of the Bundesliga table.

Even Harry Kane’s record-breaking scoring streak hasn’t been enough to see the Bavarians looking down at the rest of the German top-flight, such has been the brilliance of Leverkusen’s free-flowing football.

Bayern were always likely to strengthen mid-season in any event, and that their best hasn’t yet been good enough is even more of a reason to enter the market once it opens again for business.

On the final day of the summer transfer window, everything seemed in place for the Bavarians to acquire Fulham’s highly-rated midfielder, Joao Palhinha.

It’s even believed that the player had sorted official pictures of him in the Bayern kit, only for the deal to fall through at the 11th hour.

Palhinha noted how much it affected him, per O Jogo (h/t Sky Sports).

“I don’t know what will happen in the future. Obviously, it’s really affected me and my family, but that’s all in the past, I don’t want to think about it too much,” he said.

“It’s a great source of pride, you know what happened. In my life everything that has happened has been for a reason, I like to think of it like that.

“The future will tell me whether what happened was really what had to happen or not, but only the future will show me that.”

Fortunately for the player, it appears that all is not lost and the deal isn’t dead in the water.

“Of course, he is still on our radar. The club worked intensively with Palhinha in the summer,” Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund told BILD (h/t Sky Sports).

“I was there for the bit on the last, strange day of the transfer window, but you can’t say yet what will happen. We are generally exploring the market.”

Fulham appeared to have safeguarded their position with the offer of the new contract though it would appear unlikely that it will cause the move to fall through again, even if there may be a handful of extra hoops to jump through.

Thomas Tuchel ‘will have to be patient’ over potential incomings for Bayern Munich, Christian Falk reported.

The former Chelsea boss is known to desire a new holding midfielder from the January transfer window, though it appears doubts persist over reported targets in Joao Palhinha and Kalvin Phillips.

“Tuchel will have to be patient when it comes to transfers,” the German reporter wrote in his latest Fact Files column for CaughtOffside.

“There are still doubts about Joao Palhinha. The transfer fee of over €60m is too high for Munich.

“The same currently applies to Kalvin Philips. Manchester City are said to be demanding over €50m. That is also a sum that FC Bayern does not actually want to spend in the winter.”

The Bavarians currently find themselves second in the Bundesliga table behind surprise outfit Bayer Leverkusen.

Can Tuchel handle the pressure?

The dynamics at the Allianz Arena will no doubt feel a little strange to a coach who held most if not all the cards during his days at Chelsea.

It will be curious to see whether the Champions League winner can navigate this latest hurdle in convincing the powers that be over the importance of signing a new No.6.

Likewise, what might be the reaction of a player like Joshua Kimmich who has repeatedly insisted that he is capable of filing out in such a position?

Only time will tell whether increasing pressures prove too difficult to handle for Tuchel.

The latest Premier League team of the week is in, and it’s unsurprisingly dominated by Manchester City after they enjoyed a convincing 3-0 win away to rivals Manchester United in Sunday’s Manchester Derby.

The reigning champions were a level above Man Utd on the day, with Erling Haaland scoring twice and Phil Foden bagging the other, leading to Garth Crooks to naming as many as four players from Pep Guardiola’s side in his team of the week in his BBC Sport column.

Ederson, Haaland, Kyle Walker and Bernardo Silva are the four City players to make it in, and it’s hard to argue with that choice as they dominate the full XI, as you can see below…

Elsewhere, Arsenal’s hat-trick hero Eddie Nketiah is an obvious pick after a superb performance in the Gunners’ 5-0 thrashing of Sheffield United, while Micky van de Ven put in another fine display as Tottenham continued their superb recent form.

Elsewhere, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha were other big names to make Crooks’ line up.

If things had worked out differently, Bayern Munich would’ve made another signing from the Premier League during the summer window.

As it turned out only Harry Kane arrived from English shores, and what an impact the England captain has made so far.

The former Tottenham Hotspur talisman has 11 goals in 11 games for the Bavarians in all competitions so far according to WhoScored.

At one stage it appeared that Fulham’s Joao Palhinha would be Bundesliga bound, and despite it believed that the player had even posed for photos in a Bayern shirt, the deal wasn’t able to be concluded in time.

Now, as SportBILD note, the entire transfer could be in jeopardy, with Bayern seemingly worried about the combative midfielder’s knee problem.

Joao Palhinha

The outlet do hint at other concerns which has made the hierarchy at the Bavarian club think twice about concluding the deal in the upcoming January transfer window.

Not only will that be a huge blow to the player, who was perhaps looking forward to strutting his stuff in the Champions League and possibly winning the title, but financially for Fulham it’ll be a bitter pill to swallow.

Whatever the party line in public, the Cottagers would arguably benefit from having €65m/£55m (per SportBILD) deposited into club coffers.

Nothing is set in stone as yet and the move could still happen, however, it’s clear that Bayern are being much more cautious now.

Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha remains open to a transfer to Bayern Munich in January if the possibility should arise again.

The Portugal international has shone during his time at Craven Cottage, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he soon made the step up to playing for one of Europe’s elite.

Bayern still want a defensive midfielder this January, and Palhinha looks likely to be one of the names on their list again this winter, according to Fabrizio Romano in his exclusive Daily Briefing column.

Palhinha has also been linked with Liverpool in a recent report by Anfield Watch, with the Reds perhaps still requiring a bit of work in that area of the pitch after losing so many players in that position during the summer.

Liverpool ended up replacing Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain with Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai, but arguably still need more of a natural number 6 player in that department.

Romano didn’t comment on any possibility of a move to Liverpool, but it seems Bayern could be one to watch again.

He said: “Joao Palhinha – I’m still told that Bayern will insist for Joao Palhinha in January. They will sign a new DM this winter, for sure, and Palhinha remains one of the names on their list.

“The player would also be open to making this move happen, then it depends on Bayern-Fulham negotiations. We will see later this winter.”

Liverpool are reportedly monitoring Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha ahead of the January transfer window as his future still remains in doubt.

The 28-year-old has shone during his time at Craven Cottage, and it’s not been at all surprising to see big clubs trying to sign him, such as Bayern Munich.

According to Anfield Watch, Liverpool still also have an interest in Palhinha as they remain keen on strengthening their midfield, despite already making a flurry of new signings in that position during the summer.

Five key first-team players all left the club, with Jordan Henderson and Fabinho moving to Saudi Arabia, while James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all left on free transfers.

Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo ended up joining LFC, but it seems Palhinha is the next target in their sights.

The experienced Portugal international could be a good option to provide more of a natural replacement for Fabinho in a more defensive role than those other players are used to playing.

Anfield Watch’s report suggests £70m could be enough for Fulham to sell Palhinha.

Bayern Munich are still interested in the potential transfer of Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha, but are not yet working on a January deal, according to Fabrizio Romano in his exclusive CaughtOffside column.

The Portugal international has shone in his time in the Premier League and looks like he could be a fine signing for a number of top clubs, with Bayern coming close to bringing him in before the German transfer window deadline in the summer.

Fulham may now be in a stronger position on Palhinha now, according to Romano, though he also stressed that it’s still too far away until January for Bayern to be working again on signing the 28-year-old.

Bayern could probably still do with strengthening in midfield with a talent like Palhinha, who looks an ideal fit for Thomas Tuchel’s side after the late departure of Ryan Gravenberch to Liverpool.

“Joao Palhinha – Fulham are stronger on their position after contract extension, but the new deal was also done to give Joao a better salary until 2024,” Romano explained in today’s piece on Substack.

“Then we will see in January or June, it will depend on bids and more. Bayern are still interested after coming close to getting the deal done in the summer, but obviously they’re not working on it yet.”

It became one of the transfer sagas of the summer, and even though it was believed that Joao Palhinha had passed a medical at Bayern Munich, a move from Fulham collapsed on transfer deadline day.

That would surely have been music to the ears of fans of the Cottagers, even if it wouldn’t have pleased the player himself.

Now, just a couple of weeks after the closure of the summer window, the player has committed his future to the west London outfit until 2028, and he gave his reasons why in an interview with club media.

Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha was linked with a move away from the club during the summer transfer window.

Apparently, the 28-year-old Portuguese international has now informed the Premier League side that he wants to leave them in January and join the German club.

It will be interesting to see if Fulham are prepared to sanction his departure in January.

The move was expected to be completed during the summer transfer window, but it collapsed eventually and the player was left disappointed.

The opportunity to play for a club like Bayern Munich can be hard to turn down, and it is no surprise that the Portuguese international has his heart set on a move to Germany.

Losing a player of his quality midway through the season could prove to be a blow for Fulham and they will have to replace him adequately.

The 28-year-old has established himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in the league since joining the club and replacing him will not be an easy task for the London club, especially midway through the season.
