It’s a long running saga which has turned into a bit of an embarrassment for Liverpool Football Club.

Anfield has a rich history and has seen many great games played. From the great European nights of the 1970s right up to the 7-1 drubbing of Man United and everything in between, including that comeback against Barcelona.

As football has evolved and moved on, so has the famous old stadium. The Kop, despite being all seater, retains the charm that it’s always had, and even away supporters can’t fail to be moved when all four corners of the ground rise to sing ‘You’ll never walk alone,’ surely the greatest of football anthems.

Just recently, however, the Anfield Road end has remained a building site after the company that was supposed to fulfil the building obligations for a new upper tier, went into administration.

As each week has passed, so the status quo has remained, leaving the awful vista of a half finished stand for everyone to stare at.

However, there’s now some light at the end of the tunnel.

According to the Liverpool ECHO, there is optimism that half of the upper tier will be open for the visit of arch rivals, Man United, on December 17.

A test event needs to take place with 3000 people before a safety certificate can be granted. Assuming that is so, things can move forward and, with any luck, the entire upper tier can be in use early in the new year.

Merseyside Police arrested three supporters on suspicion of possessing of flares ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Manchester City.

The action on the pitch was as entertaining as expected on Sunday as Liverpool and City played out a 2-2 draw at Anfield.

The Reds thought they might have won it when Mohamed Salah scored a superb goal with around 15 minutes left, but a deflected Kevin de Bruyne effort meant they had to settle for a draw.

The result was not a disastrous one for Jurgen Klopp’s men, but there were some less desirable incidents off the pitch.

Merseyside Police have confirmed they made three arrests on the afternoon on suspicion of possessing flares.

The action on the pitch was enthralling

All three were taken into custody on suspicion of breaching rules which do not allow supporters to take pyrotechnics into football stadiums in the UK.

The statement read: “We can confirm that three men have been arrested on suspicion of possessing flares in Anfield before the game between Liverpool FC and Manchester City FC today, Sunday 3 October.

“At around 3.05pm, three men were identified by officers as having possession of flares in the Anfield Road area, one of which was thrown, causing no damage or injury.

“All were detained and have been arrested and taken into custody.

“A 38-year-old man from Liverpool City Centre was arrested on suspicion of an offence under the Fireworks Act after a flare was reportedly thrown in the road.

Liverpool is expanding its home Anfield stadium, which already has a capacity of 53,390, to incorporate an extra 7,000 fans.

This will make Anfield the fourth largest stadium in the Premier League, after Old Trafford, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium Lane and The Emirates, with the latter holding only a few hundred more seats than what the expanded Anfield will hold.

Work is set to be completed on the new upper tier by the start of the 2023/24 season.

German manager Klopp has been in charge of Liverpool since 2015 and has overseen a renaissance at the club.

Guiding them to back-to-back Champions League finals in 2018 and 2019, winning the latter and winning the club’s first-ever Premier League title and its first top division league title in almost 30 years.

Now that crowds are allowed back into stadiums again in what must seem like the longest 18 months in football supporting history, away fans will again get to delight in travelling up and down the country to watch their team in action.

That means heading to a variety of different stadia, some of which leave a lot to be desired, and others which are well worth the spend.

A recent YouGov survey, detailed via talkSPORT, ranked each stadium in the Premier League from the best to worst, and the results aren’t likely to surprise anyone.

MORE: Liverpool to rejoin Super League

Top of this particular table was Liverpool’s Anfield ground, closely followed by Man United’s Old Trafford and Tottenham’s futuristic new White Hart Lane.

Old Trafford came second in the list

Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge could only make seventh place, Man City’s Etihad was a disappointing sixth, with Newcastle’s St. James’ Park fifth and Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium in fourth.

Down at the bottom was Watford’s ageing Vicarage Road.

Ahead of this weekend’s double header against Athletic Club Bilbao and Osasuna, Liverpool have been hard at work updating parts of Anfield.

Work will continue after those two matches and should be completed before the first home match of the season, against Burnley on August 21.

According to the Liverpool ECHO, 1,800 rail seats have been placed at the back of The Kop, and they will be part of a season-long trial at the club.

A further 6,000 rail seats will also be placed in the Anfield Road stand, although the club have been at pains to point out that they are still not encouraging standing.

MORE: This Liverpool player still wants to leave

The idea is for them to be used at times of celebration, for example after a goal is scored, to stop a potential crush from behind causing injuries.

Rail seats will be on trial for the season at Anfield

The club do not expect those sitting in the rail seats to be using them as safe standing.

Their use is so that Liverpool can try to address the persistent issue of standing at home matches.

With Thomas Tuchel inspiring Chelsea to a 1-0 victory against compatriot Jurgen Klopp this evening, the Blues also dealt Liverpool the setting of a very unwanted feat.

Opta report that with Liverpool now losing five consecutive matches at their Anfield home, all of which coming in the Premier League, this is the first time it’s ever happened in the club’s illustrious history.

To make matters worse, it appears as though the Reds’ dire run on home soil as of late hasn’t even been matched in the past when all competitions are taken into account.

Liverpool may also see their status as a title-winning side come under question unfairly as this is also the first time a reigning top-flight champion in England has lost five home games in a row.

Liverpool held more of the possession (55%) over their opponents but really failed to make it count for anything, with a lack of chances and just one shot on target from the entire 90 minutes of action.

Klopp’s men have now slid to seventh in the table, with two sides in Spurs and Villa holding the games in hand that could see the Reds leapfrogged.

Thankfully, the Premier League season has been very tight, there’s only considerable gaps at the very top and bottom of the table, so the Reds can still mount a serious challenge for a Champions League spot if they turn things around in their final 11 matches of the campaign.

Sky Sports have just announced that Liverpool will not be allowed to travel to Germany to face RB Leipzig in their Champions League knockout tie on February 16.

This comes as a result of a ban from the German government regarding entry of people from countries affected by Covid-19 mutations, including the United Kingdom.

Germany have so far deemed that there will not be any exemptions for Liverpool, like the elite sports ones we’ve seen across the world so far.

UEFA have informed Sky Sports News that they are now in discussions with the German FA and the nation’s government regarding a solution.

UEFA tinkered with their rules due to the Covid-19 pandemic, allowing for ties to be switched around, but this would see Liverpool relinquish their home advantage in the decisive second-leg.

The first-leg is pencilled in for February 16 and the second-leg is due to take place on March 10 as things currently stand.

Switching the fixtures around could salvage the encounter, but there’s no telling how the Covid-19 mutations develop in the UK further, meaning Germany’s stance on travel could be the same come March, so perhaps a different solution is necessary.

Sky Sports News’ brilliant presenter adds that the ties could be played at a neutral venue, whilst the two-legged encounter could even be reduced to a single game like the summer’s restart saw.

It’s worth noting that even the match taking place on neutral ground would likely require authorisation from the German government, as this would still involve Leipzig mixing with a team of players and staff hailing from a nation being damaged by Covid-19 mutations.

Liverpool probably won’t want to relinquish being at Anfield for the second-leg, whilst if any leg takes place on neutral ground it would only be fair that both do, potentially losing the Reds the chance of playing at home completely.
