Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has claimed that Newcastle United deserved to feel a degree of hurt after getting it wrong with the summer transfer window signing of Sandro Tonali.

The Italy international joined Newcastle from AC Milan over the summer but played just eight Premier League games for the club before receiving a lengthy ban from playing, related to a gambling addiction.

Speaking in the video clip below, Carragher made it clear he had an issue with the idea of Newcastle now being able to replace Tonali with a loan signing like Ruben Neves this January, as they deserve to be punished for failing to do their due diligence on the player properly…

Newcastle will certainly feel they could have perhaps done more to find out about issues in Tonali’s private life, but at the same time it is surely reasonable for Eddie Howe to feel he now needs to strengthen his midfield.

The Magpies will perhaps argue that Tonali could just as easily have picked up a serious injury that might also have kept him out, and in that situation there would be a bit more sympathy if they were to sign someone as cover.

The former Liverpool defender doesn’t believe the 10-point deduction Everton has received is fair and highlighted the potential wrongdoings of other Premier League clubs.

The Toffee’s were hit with a 10-point deduction on Friday which puts them down into the relegation zone where they are currently tied on points with Burnley.

They were found guilty of breaching financial fair play rules after they reported losses of £371.8 million.

The point deduction is the heaviest sanction in Premier League history but boyhood Everton fan, Carragher, believes the punishment is too ‘excessive’ and pointed fingers at other clubs in the league.

But despite this huge setback, Sean Dyche’s men are only two points away from safety with 26 games left to play.

Everton has announced that they will appeal the points deduction and released a statement claiming they are “shocked and disappointed” by the decision.

The club also went on to label the sanctions from the Premier League’s Commission as “wholly disproportionate and unjust”.

Jamie Carragher still firmly believes that the treble winners will only get better as the season progresses.

Currently at the top of the table, Manchester City have had a tougher start to the season than expected with the title race looking a lot more competitive than in recent years.

Pep Guardiola’s side drew with Chelsea 4-4 at Stamford Bridge in an exciting yet unexpected game of football.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Carragher claimed that ‘City are still a level above’ their title contenders.

“I do think City are still a level above Liverpool and Arsenal right now. That might change over the next four or five months as those teams grow, certainly Liverpool, they’ve got a lot of new players.” he said on Sky Sports via the Daily Mail.

“But it feels like we haven’t seen the real City this season and they’re still top of the league. When you look at that league table, it’s a great league table. City haven’t moved away from everybody. In some ways, that was a really good result for the league. As the season goes on, the gaps will grow.

Manchester City draw 4-4 with Chelsea

The former Liverpool defender believes that his side can push Manchester City all the way to the because they have the experience to do so.

“Why shouldn’t Liverpool go to Man City and believe they are in this title race? They are the one team who have really pushed Man City over these last few years. It is a new Liverpool team but they could still be Man City’s biggest challengers because they’ve got players and a manager who has been there before.”

Jamie Carragher didn’t agree with Anthony Taylor’s decision to award Manchester City a penalty during the first half.

In what was arguably the game of the season, Chelsea fought back to draw 4-4 with Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.

Many expected the treble winners to steamroll the Blues and it looked like that prediction was about to come through after Erling Haaland went down in the area after a tussle with Marc Cucurella.

The referee immediately pointed to the spot with commentator Carragher disagreeing with his decision.

“I think that’s harsh for me, because it looks like half of one, half a dozen on the other between Haaland and Cucurella.” he said via the Daily Star.

Erling Haaland scores from the spot

“Cucurella initially is tight and aggressive with Haaland but Haaland also grabs hold of him. This is not the right decision because VAR wasn’t looking at the start of the tussle, he’s got hold of his shirt which allows him to get in front and then he goes down. That’s not right.

“It’s very harsh on Chelsea, VAR have only looked at the end of tussle. I think it’s harsh, I really do.”

The Norwegian stepped up to hammer home the penalty but Chelsea bit back straight away thanks to a Thiago Silva bullet header.

The game opened up from there on out with the final score a fair representation of the game state.

Newcastle United right-back Kieran Trippier has been singled out for criticism in the club’s defeat away to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League this week.

The Magpies are now up against it to qualify from their group after losing in Germany, and Carragher felt Trippier could’ve done better on the opening goal.

“Fullkrug scored this goal,” said Carragher. “But I was looking at Kieran Trippier in the lead-up to the goal.

“I always feel, when I see a player go on to the goal line, I never like it. Mark the opposition attackers in the box. The goalkeeper’s job is to save it on the line. And just a split second there put them 1-0 down.

“Then an unbelievable counter-attack to win the game.”

Newcastle had got off to a promising start in the Champions League with a draw away to AC Milan and a 4-1 win at home to Paris Saint-Germain, but back-to-back defeats to Dortmund have changed the situation and it will be interesting to see how they can bounce back.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher slammed the “ridiculous” challenge by Tottenham defender Destiny Udogie that led him to get a second yellow card and subsequent red against Chelsea last night.

The youngster’s dismissal meant Spurs ended up finishing the game with nine men, and it majorly handed the advantage to the away side, who scored three times late on to win 4-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

See below as Carragher analysed this important moment during Sky Sports’ coverage of the game…

It’s clear that Tottenham lost control from this point, and Nicolas Jackson ended up hitting a hat-trick in what will undoubtedly go down as a memorable day for him.

Although Tottenham lost their first game of the season in what appeared to be a comprehensive 4-1 defeat to Chelsea, the score line doesn’t really tell the story of the chaos which unfolded during the 90 minutes.

Disallowed goals aplenty, two sendings off for the hosts, and enough talking points for a whole show, Sky Sports pundit, Jamie Carragher, was delighted when analysing the match in the immediate aftermath.

In one particular clip, Tottenham appeared to be playing a back seven, and refused to drop deeper even if it meant that they could be exposed, as they eventually were, by the Blues.

Carragher described the sight of seven defenders and one midfielder as perhaps the most ‘favourite clip I’ve ever seen.’

Jamie Carragher was full of praise for Ange Postecoglou after his side’s 4-1 loss to Chelsea on Monday night.

Tottenham had an uphill battle for the majority of the game, first with Cristian Romero getting sent off before Destiny Udogie received a second yellow card.

Although his side was down to nine men, the Australian manager decided to play a very high line against Chelsea.

Speaking after the game, Postecoglou reiterated that he would not change his playing style no matter what, an attitude which Carragher thought was ‘brilliant’.

Jamie Carragher doesn’t believe that his old side can win the league until they bring in another defensive midfielder and defender.

Liverpool saved their blushes against Luton Town thanks to a late equaliser from the returning Luis Diaz.

Tahith Chong scored the opener for the home side just ten minutes prior, sending the home fans wild as they dreamed of an upset.

Although Jurgen Klopp’s side scored late on, he will view the game as points dropped instead of gained as they struggle to stay in touching distance of first place.

The Reds face defending champions Manchester City in a few weeks and will need to pull out a result if they have ambitions of winning the league this season.

Luis Diaz scores against Luton Town

But Jamie Carragher doesn’t believe that they can, at least not until they bring in a defensive midfielder and another defender.

“Liverpool still aren’t as good as Man City at stopping counter-attacks,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“Liverpool are a team who dominate possession, they have a lot of the ball, but they’re not quite as good as Man City off the ball so there are more turnovers and they lose the ball.

“Opponents do seem to find spaces a lot more to and attack and get in behind Liverpool. Luton didn’t have the quality to really punish them, except for the goal we saw.

“Liverpool in midfield are improved from what we saw last season, but they still haven’t got a top holding midfielder.

“(Alexis) MacAllister isn’t a top holding midfielder. He’s good on the ball in terms of receiving, but defensively, he finds it really tough and he lacks a bit of pace for that position.

“In the back four, Liverpool could do with not so much a player for a specific position, but just a great defender who can almost play in a couple of positions.”

Jamie Carragher called out a section of Luton supporters for offensive chants during their draw with Liverpool at Kenilworth Road.

Jurgen Klopp’s side fought back to equalise against the promoted side late on, thanks to a powerful header from Luis Diaz.

During a period of the second half, some Luton supporters could be heard chanting  ‘always the victim’  at the travelling Liverpool supporters.

Carragher, who was on commentary for Sky Sports, immediately pointed it out on the broadcast.

“At the start of the season, I was involved in something about tragedy chanting and supporters coming together,” said Carragher via the Liverpool Echo.

Luis Diaz scores against Luton Town

“I have just heard something a couple of times in this game. Supporters have got to have rivalry but we are better than that. A lot of clubs have been guilty of that over the years but football fans are better than that.”

Although Klopp’s side narrowly avoided defeat against Luton, it will feel like two points dropped rather than one point gained.

With the game against Manchester City peering over the horizon, a win was necessary to keep them engaged in the title race as we enter the busy Christmas period.
