Luton Town have stunned Liverpool at Kenilworth Road in their Premier League clash as former Man United star Tahith Chong scores his first goal in the English top flight. 

The Reds have struggled to break the home side down throughout the match with their best chances falling to Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota.

Luton have had chances of their own and eventually took the lead after 80 minutes when they caught Liverpool on the counter-attack, which was finished off by Chong.

The 23-year-old came through the Man United academy and spent three years at Old Trafford before leaving for Birmingham in 2022.

It’s sure to be an incredible season for Luton Town, promoted to the Premier League via a penalty shoot-out win over Coventry City in the Championship Play-Off final at Wembley Stadium.

At 40 years of age, Rob Edwards will be one of the younger managers in the English top-flight next season, and the Hatters will certainly have their work cut out against the more established Premier League clubs.

One can expect that Kenilworth Road will be packed to the rafters when the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Man United come calling too.

The Red Devils may even find themselves up against one of their old players if a potential transfer this summer goes through.

That’s because, according to sources speaking to Football Insider, former Man United star, Tahith Chong, is interesting the Hatters.

Now at Championship side, Birmingham City, the 23-year-old has impressed in the Midlands and Luton want to try and tie him down to a permanent deal.

Manchester United are expected to complete more summer transfer business before the window closes at the start of next month.

The Red Devils, led by new manager Erik ten Hag, have already made three new signings. Defensive duo Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia both joined for a combined cost of £64m (Transfermarkt) with former Spurs playmaker Christian Eriksen, who arrived on a free transfer, completing the trio of signings.

However, while the 20-time league winners try and continue their summer spending spree by convincing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong to swap Spain for England, according to leading transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the club could also see multiple players move the other way.

Although United still have a lot of work to do to offload players surplus to requirements, when it comes to younger players, loan moves are far more likely, and easier to conclude.

Discussing the possibility of United sanctioning three loan moves, Romano, who wrote in his CaughtOffside SubStack column, said: “I believe there’s a good chance Tahith Chong, Facundo Pellistri, and Amad Diallo will all go on loan this summer.”

All three wide-attackers spent last season out on loan and while none particularly impressed, the new 2022-23 season will give the trio another chance to convince ten Hag that they belong at Old Trafford.

After such a disappointing season, Erik ten Hag will be filtering through his squad, and offloading any deadwood this summer.

Manchester United have already brought in Christian Eriksen, Tyrell Malacia, and Lisandro Martinez as part of a rebuild, and as a result, as many as 15 players could leave Old Trafford this summer.

That’s according to the Mirror, who have listed all the players who could be out the door come the end of the transfer window.

Ronaldo is of course the most high-profile player, with the Portuguese star looking to leave this summer. The 37-year-old hasn’t been involved in Manchester United’s pre-season so far.

In terms of senior players, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Phil Jones, and Eric Bailly are all likely to be allowed to leave if the right offer comes in.

Shola Shoretire and Alvaro Fernandez, just like Ronaldo, are not part of United’s pre-season tour, with both players attracting loan interest as it stands.

Amad Diallo and Facundo Pellestri are unlikely to leave the club on a permanent deal, but the pair have recently returned from loan, and another temporary move could be in the pipeline.

Brandon Williams will be allowed to leave the club after returning from loan, with Teden Mengi, Tahith Chong, and Ethan Laird all available to be sent out on loan.

The three remaining players are Nathan Bishop, Matej Kovar, and Will Fish.

After failing to qualify for the Champions League last season, and finishing with zero trophies, Ten Hag will be in the market for several signings, and with a limit on squad size, the reality is some players will have to leave this summer.

Chong joined Manchester United from Feyenoord in 2016. After coming through the academy, Chong has only managed five league appearances in four seasons, and has been sent out on loan on multiple occasions.

Chong is unlikely to make the grade at Manchester United, and at 22, it’s probably time for him to leave the club to progress his career. Despite having a lack of options in wide positions, there’s no doubt Erik ten Hag will be looking to sign an elite winger this summer.

The girlfriend of Manchester United ace Tahith Chong has spoken about the trauma of being the victim of an armed burglary in their home.

Nightclub performer Rianna Taylor, 24, has opened up on the nightmarish incident in an interview with the Sun, admitting she feared for her life as masked burglars threatened to chop her and Chong up if they didn’t reveal where their most valuable belongings were.

Chong is currently out on loan at Birmingham City and hasn’t seen much playing time in the Man Utd first-team, but one can only imagine what an incident like this would do to a player’s well-being.

Taylor makes it sound like a terrifying moment in their lives, with Chong dragged out of bed by the masked gang, who stole some valuable belongings after breaking into their home.

“I started shaking uncontrollably and thought it was a nightmare. After a few minutes I realised it was real,” Taylor said.

“One of the men threatened us with a very large kitchen knife and another grabbed Tahith by the ankle and dragged him out of bed.

“Another was holding a baseball bat which he was waving in our faces. He was shouting, ‘Where are the watches?’.

“The blokes were terrifying and there was one in particular who was about 6ft 4ins who was menacing and seemed like the leader.

During his time on the Red Devils’ books, Chong has struggled. So far failing to cement a place down in the club’s senior first team, the 22-year-old has been left with no choice but to spend the last few years out on loan.

Although previously turning out for the likes of German side Werder Bremen and Belgian club Club Brugge, it has been without a doubt England’s second-tier that has proved to be the best location for the youngster’s development.

However, although the Blues seem keen to secure the winger for the 2022-23 season, United may have other ideas.

Speaking recently, as quoted by MEN, United technical director Darren Fletcher confirmed that the Red Devils would like to see Chong back at the club next season.

“We currently have 13 young players and academy products on loan and playing regularly in other divisions or leagues.

“Hopefully we’ll see players like Brandon Williams, Teden Mengi, Jimmy Garner, Ethan Laird, Tahiti Chong, and Amad Diallo reap the benefits of that.

“All of them are doing really well on loan and we’re excited to bring them back in preseason to see how they fare with our first team players.”

Having recently announced that they plan to tour Asia and Australia during pre-season, the summer break could see United use the time to assess Chong, as well as others, before making final decisions on where they will play their football next season.

Manchester United star Tahith Chong has had his contract extended until 2023, after it was due to expire in June.

The 22-year-old is currently on loan at Birmingham City, and Manchester United have reportedly triggered a clause in his contract to keep him for another year, according to Manchester Evening News.

Chong has made five league appearances for the Manchester club, but has spent most of his minutes on the pitch out on loan at Werder Bremen, Club Brugge, and Birmingham City.

Chong moved to Manchester United from Feyenoord in 2016 and will be hoping to eventually break into the United first-team regularly.

The Technical Director at Old Trafford, Darren Fletcher, listed multiple players out on loan who were the club were hoping to integrate into the first-team in pre-season.

“We currently have 13 young players and academy products on loan and playing regularly in other divisions or leagues. Hopefully, we’ll see players like Brandon Williams, Teden Mengi, Jimmy Garner, Ethan Laird, Tahiti Chong, and Amad Diallo reap the benefits of that,” said Fletcher, also reported by Manchester Evening News.

Chong has mostly been utilised on the wing in recent years, but can also operate in the number ten position. With Jesse Lingard and Paul Pogba set to leave the club due to their contracts expiring, Chong could be brought into the squad to add squad depth in attacking positions.

Sometimes it’s the freak injuries that are the worst, and one Manchester United loanee has found that out to his cost.

Tahith Chong had already enjoyed relatively successful loan spells at Club Brugge and Werder Bremen before heading to Birmingham City on a season-long deal.

However, the 21-year-old won’t now see any action until well into the new year after a bizarre training ground incident.

According to Birmingham Mail, Chong will be out for 16 weeks, but Birmingham manager, Lee Bowyer, hopes that the player will be allowed to return again once fit.

“Unfortunately he had to have an operation today,” he was quoted as saying.

“Something so small as well, the way it happened. Standing on the side of the pitch, a five yard pass into the pitch. No-one near him, no challenges or anything and he has damaged his groin area.

“It’s a massive loss, everyone knows what he has been like since he has been here, he has been a massive player for us.”

A ruptured thigh injury needs a period of complete rest and recuperation, and Chong would do well to accede to the medics advice.
