Liverpool legend Luis Suarez has heaped praise onto current Reds forward Darwin Nunez after playing with him for the Uruguay national team.

Suarez himself was a star performer for Liverpool around ten years ago, before he continued his dazzling displays in a highly successful spell at Barcelona between 2014 and 2020.

Now Nunez is one of Liverpool’s main attacking outlets, and while the jury may be out about how well he’s done in his time at Anfield so far, it seems Suarez is a big fan of his fellow countryman, describing him as one of the best in the world in his position.

Nunez impressed a lot during his Benfica days, and he’s perhaps starting to show a little more consistency in a Liverpool shirt this season, but time will tell if he can ever truly be one of the elite strikers in the game.

Suarez may be a little biased after playing with him at international level, but then again such a great player also knows a thing or two about being a top striker at the highest level.

“I have one of the best No.9s in the world in front of me today, which is Darwin,” Suarez said, as quoted by the Metro, when discussing his place in the Uruguay squad.

Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez hit a lovely brace in Uruguay 3-0 victory over Bolivia, leaving Bielsa’s men just two points from top in World Cup Qualification standings.

His first goal comes from a lovely cutback from Facundo Pellistri, which Nunez smartly finishes first time into the far left corner, putting Uruguay 1-0 up inside 15 minutes.

The second for Nunez came in the 71st minute, giving Uruguay a 3-0 lead, after a lovely weighted ball towards the back post from Federico Valverde found Nicolas de la Cruz who headed it back across goal for Nunez to nod home.

Lionel Messi has praised Darwin Nunez and Uruguay in a recent interview.

Uruguay ended Argentina’s unbeaten run when they beat them 2-0 on Friday.

Araujo scored the opener before Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez sealed the win with an great strike past Emi Martinez.

Speaking to TyC Sports, the legend himself praised the Uruguayan team for being great at counters.

He also named Darwin Nunez as he proceed to explain that it’s possible due to excellent players like him.

He said:

Liverpool FC writer Neil Jones has written about the club’s backing of Darwin Nunez in the latest edition of his Daily Briefing column.

The Reds spent big money to bring Nunez to Anfield from Benfica last season, but the Uruguay international has not entirely won over his critics just yet, as he has become known for producing moments of great quality one minute before missing an easy chance the next.

Nunez looked a hugely impressive talent during his time at Benfica and one imagines he still has it in him to have a fine career in the Premier League, with Jones explaining in his column precisely why Liverpool chose to sign him over other attacking options in the summer of 2022.

According to Jones, it seems LFC still expect Nunez can develop into a 30-goal-a-season striker, with the club impressed by his ability to find space and get into scoring positions.

Darwin Nunez in action for Liverpool

Jones adds, though, that Liverpool are also working on Nunez’s finishing.

“If nothing else, Darwin Nunez seems determined to ensure that those who have strong opinions on him, good or bad, will always have plenty to talk about!” Jones wrote.

“The Uruguayan was the hero against Bournemouth with his stunning winning goal, but he was back to zero at Luton, taking nine shots and failing to get on the scoresheet despite a string of good chances. The miss in front of an open goal late on is one that will be remembered for some time, I’m sure.

“Those who doubt Nunez will point to it as further evidence of his lack of quality, but I have a different view on him. I think he is this close to being one of the best forwards around, and what we are talking about now are the minor tweaks which will allow him to truly silence his critics.

“Let’s not forget that Nunez, despite clear issues, scored 15 goals in all competitions for Liverpool last season. He is virtually halfway to that target already this season, where he is averaging a goal contribution every 60 minutes, and where he is looking infinitely more in turn with the demands of his team and his manager.

“Nunez’s attributes are vast. He is lightning quick, good in the air, strong and has fantastic movement in and around the penalty area. I know that his ability to find and manufacture space in the final third, and to get himself into scoring positions, was one of the key reasons the Reds wanted to buy him from Benfica, as opposed to other attacking players that were looked at. They believe he has the instinct, and the technical tools, to be a 30 goal a season striker.

“What he does need to develop is variation in his finishing. It is clear from watching him that he can lack subtlety and composure at times, choosing to lash at the ball as opposed to converting calmly. He almost looks more comfortable with difficult chances, striking the ball hard, first-time or on the volley, than he does when given time to choose his best option.

“If you were to compare him to someone like, for example, Harry Kane, there are clear areas you would like to see him improve. Kane has his preferred finish – hard and low from right to left – but he has developed the full range, bringing in side-foots, drives, dinks, deft touches, curlers and just about everything else in between. If Nunez can start to do something similar, his numbers will sky rocket. He already has a rock-solid mentality, in that missed chances do not seem to adversely affect him.

“The trick now is to add real consistency. I know that Liverpool have worked a lot with him on his finishing, and that the general feeling within the club is that they are seeing progress. The key is that he continues that progress, and that he stays fit and available. If he does, then he’ll hit 20+ goals easily this season.”

The ability of Darwin Nunez to score from various positions and distances for Liverpool is evident, but it’s frustrating to see him miss open goals. 

The Uruguayan international found the back of the net nine times in last season’s Premier League campaign, and he already has four this term having featured mainly as a substitute. However, he registered a staggering 20 big chances missed in 2022/23 across 29 appearances, and those missed big chances still haunt him, recording 10 misses this time around. 

His recent miss left Mohamed Salah visibly frustrated, and it ultimately proved costly for Liverpool against Luton Town on Sunday. 

Despite Liverpool’s overall performance falling short of expectations, they still had numerous opportunities to win the match. Nunez had a significant share of these chances, and his finishing, including hitting the crossbar in the first half, was far from ideal.

Jurgen Klopp’s men created six great goalscoring opportunities at Kenilworth Road, with three of them falling to 24-year-old Nunez who ultimately made a hash of all them.

Should Liverpool get shut of Darwin Nunez?

There is no doubt that he has the capability to perform much better. If he can start converting the easy chances in addition to the challenging ones, Liverpool would have a formidable force. 

The Uruguayan has match-winning moments in him. Unfortunately for Liverpool fans he also has the tendency to miss clear-cut opportunities, which could cost them in big moments in the future. This is a huge concern and needs to be addressed.

Darwin Nunez has just missed an absolute sitter for Liverpool.

Liverpool have found it difficult to break the Luton defense so far but they had the golden chance to break the deadlock in the 70th minute.

Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered an excellent cross to Salah, and his headed effort fell to Nunez, who had the simple task to tap the ball into an empty net. However, somehow Nunez ended up lashing the ball into the stands, leaving everyone in disbelief.

Nunez has missed some goals since joining Liverpool but this is up there with the worst of them all.

Darwin Nunez has doubled the lead for Liverpool but the goal was all about the incredible Mo Salah pass to Szoboszlai.

Diogo Jota switched the ball from the left to the Hungarian who played a pass to Mo Salah on the right and continued his run.

Liverpool have added a fourth goal in their Europa League clash with Toulouse courtesy of Ryan Gravenberch but that came after a miss of the season contender from Darwin Nunez. 

The first half saw plenty of goals as the Reds went in 3-1 ahead thanks to goals from Diogo Jota, Wataru Endo and Darwin Nunez.

The three points are now confirmed for Jurgen Klopp’s team as Ryan Gravenberch added a fourth after Nunez produced a miss-of-the-season contender after some impressive work.

Wataru Endo has scored his first goal for Liverpool in their Europa League clash with Toulouse and the Reds added another shortly after as Darwin Nunez smashed the ball into the net to make it 3-1.

Diogo Jota gave the home side the lead within the first ten minutes of the game before the French side drew level just seven minutes later.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are in full control at present as Endo headed in his first goal for his new club before Darwin Nunez smashed home a third in front of the Anfield Road End.
