Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly both on alert for the potential transfer of Everton midfielder Amadou Onana, who is seen as a sellable asset.

This is according to a report from talkSPORT, who state that Onana’s Everton future could be in some doubt due to the Toffees’ financial issues.

The Belgian midfielder has performed well in his time at Goodison Park and looks like he could surely do a job at a top club like Man Utd or Chelsea.

Erik ten Hag would certainly do well to bring in a long-term replacement for the ageing and out-of-form Casemiro, while Chelsea are perhaps less in need of a player of this profile after the recent signings of the likes of Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia.

Amadou Onana is being linked with Chelsea and Manchester United

Still, if Everton are forced to sell players to ease their financial woes this winter, it makes sense that top clubs like United and Chelsea would start to show an interest in a potential bargain.

Onana may well feel he’s good enough to make the next step up in his career soon, and he might not be the only one eager to get out of Everton as their recent points deduction puts them in serious danger of relegation this season.

Everton’s 10-point deduction has been the biggest story to emerge from the Premier League over the international break and Man United legend Gary Neville is not happy about the whole situation.

The Toffees were punished for breaking the league’s financial rules and were handed the biggest punishment ever dished out as a result, which many in the football community deem very unfair.

This comes amid Man City and Chelsea also being under investigation for financial rules breaches and Man United legend Gary Neville is not happy with the current state of the league, which includes the power the Big Six clubs have.

The Sky Sports pundit believes the trust in the league has evaporated and that the greed of the big clubs have turned them into bullies as they want to control the upper spots of the table and are happy to throw others under the bus to achieve it.

Everton are in the relegation zone after points deduction

Speaking on the latest episode of Stick To Football, Neville has stated that he’d be furious if he was an Everton fan and that the Premier League are scared of Man City.

“The trust and faith has gone completely (in the Premier League),” the Man United legend said on the show.

“The greed and selfishness is out of control it’s lawless. The Premier League is a defunct organisation.

“I’d be furious if I was an Everton fan. I’d feel like it is an absolute disgrace what you’ve done to my club. Big Six, they’re bullies.

With 115 charges hanging over their head, Neville believes that the Premier League are “frightened to death of Manchester City” and is evidently not happy about their situation either.

Football has been broken for a long time, evident in the amount of money being spent and the same teams have been seen winning all the time for a good number of years across Europe.

The sport is limited in the amount of fairytale stories being produced these days and the greed of organisations and big clubs continues to get worse and worse as the years pass by.

Tottenham are in the market for a new centre-back and the North London club have come out of their meeting this week having identified two Premier League stars.

Spurs lost Mickey Van de Ven to a hamstring injury during their defeat to Chelsea earlier this month and the Dutch defender has been ruled out of action until 2024.

Ange Postecoglou was already short in this area of the pitch as the Australian coach is not a fan of Eric Dier – who is expected to leave in January.

According to the Daily Mail, Spurs have identified Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi and Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite as potential targets for January; whilst alternatives come in the form of AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw, Morato of Benfica and Sporting Lisbon’s Goncalo Inacio.

Branthwaite is liked by Tottenham

Both Guehi and Branthwaite have been two standout defenders in the Premier League this season and either one would be a great addition to Postecoglou’s squad.

Both are young and will develop into even better players than they are now but the problem for Tottenham is the fact that clubs will not want to sell mid-season.

Everton’s financial situation makes the 21-year-old an easier signing but if Spurs want either of the two, they will have to fork out a large chunk of money.

The news of Everton’s 10-point deduction has sent shockwaves through football, with the co-creator of the Premier League, Jon Smith, suggesting that champions, Man City, must also be punished – but only if they’re found guilty.

It’s clear that Smith is taking a considered view of City’s alleged misdemeanours, and prefers to sit on the side of the fence that believes everyone is innocent until proven guilty.

In order for the club to be given a fair hearing, that is the viewpoint that everyone should adopt of course.

Sadly, in the social media age, trial by the mob seems to be something that many like to get on board with, without even bothering to digest a shred of evidence.

“With Manchester City I’d like to put on record that I love the advancement that City have put into the football club ownership in their group,” Smith said in his exclusive CaughtOffside column.

“However, if they have breached the regulations 114 or 115 times, then they should be punished, and I’m a little concerned that we’ve heard nothing about that. But if they’re innocent, they’re innocent. They shouldn’t be pilloried because they’re wealthy either.

“If the regulators have got any teeth in the future, they have to be seen to bite now, because now is the moment where everyone’s eyes are looking at it.”

The point Smith makes about the regulators baring their teeth is a salient one.

On far too many occasions in the past, clubs that have done wrong in some way, get a token punishment by the authorities, be that the Premier League, UEFA, FIFA or whomever, and it really isn’t a deterrent to them.

Perhaps that’s why the 10 points metered out to Everton feels different. Is different.

Even so, Smith still feels that points deductions aren’t enough of a deterrent for the punishments to be worthwhile.

“Lastly, the 10-point deduction affects Everton’s supporters as much as it affects the ownership,” he added.

“So I think if if the financial value of a club has been enhanced by you breaching the regulations, in other words, you financially benefited, then a sizeable percentage of the punishment should be financial. Points is part of it yes, because it hurts, but the penalties should also be financial.”

Alan Shearer has backed Everton to remain in the Premier League after they were hit with a points deduction last week.

The Toffees were found guilty of breaching financial fair play rules on Friday with the Premier League docking 10 points as punishment.

As a result, Sean Dyche’s side now sit deep in the relegation zone in 19th place, tied with Burnley on just two points.

Everton have narrowly avoided the drop in each of the past two seasons but many believe that they will stay up this year, despite the penalty.

Everton players celebrate a 3-2 win against Crystal Palace

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Shearer claimed that Dyche’s men have a ‘realistic chance’ of staying up.

“Because the standard at the bottom half this season is as bad as it has been for a long time. I think they can recover, I think they will get out of it.” he said.

“Even with this 10-point deficit, I think they will stay up, I think they will have enough, yeah.”

However, the Merseyside club could find themselves in even more difficulty as Burnley, Leeds and Leicester City are reportedly seeking to sue the club for £300 million.

The three clubs feel rightfully aggrieved as they were relegated and Everton were not.

You’d be hard pressed to find anyone that believes Everton’s 10-point deduction for financial irregularities is a proportionate penalty, and that includes Mayor of Liverpool, Steve Rotherham.

The Toffees have a week to put their appeal together and they will be backed by Mr. Rotherham.

He has already written to the Premier League on the club’s behalf to criticise their heavy-handedness with regards to the punishment metered out.

Whether this will have any effect on how the appeal is dealt with won’t be known for a while yet.

The wealth gap that clearly exists between the Premier League and the rest of the English football pyramid has been highlighted again with the deduction of points for Everton.

The Toffees have been hit with a record 10-point deduction which has immediately placed them as joint bottom of the English top-flight, and only off the bottom on goal difference.

What the ground-breaking decision has also done is brought the potential misdemeanours of Chelsea and Man City into sharper focus, with it felt that there’s a real possibility of one or both clubs being relegated from the Premier League if they are found guilty.

In any event, as The Telegraph (subscription required) note, the long-awaited £130 million pyramid rescue package has see the wealth-gap row reignited after the Everton chaos.

It would appear that the ‘Big Six’ clubs are being asked to contribute more money in order that the trickle down effect ensures other clubs don’t suffer financial hardship.

Quite what those clubs will make of this latest ‘demand’ is anyone’s guess, though with so much money coming into the game now at the very top end, there has to be a more forensic look at just how much money these clubs are making and whether or not they can put aside some extra for the benefit of the entire football family.

With Everton in the middle of building a new stadium too, relegation to the Championship would be a disaster.

Everton were rocked by a 10-point deduction this week which leaves them in the Premier League’s relegation zone and also with an uncertain future.

The Toffees have been in good form of late so survival shouldn’t be too much of a problem this season for the club as they set about appealing their deduction for breaching Financial Fair Play rules.

Their financial situation at present is unclear and the Sunday Express reports that if Everton need to sell players in January, Man United have their eye on Jarrad Branthwaite and Amadou Onana, who are two of the Merseyside club’s most important players.

Man United have been in the market for a centre-back and a midfielder and it is clear that the Everton stars are on their list for both roles.

The Toffees are unlikely to sell any of their players midseason unless they are forced to but either one, or both, would be good additions to Ten Hag’s squad.

Onana has been a key player for Everton ever since joining the club last season, while Branthwaite has been excellent under Sean Dyche during the current campaign.

The Everton boss has a harder job of keeping his side in the Premier League for next season following their points deduction and he will not want to make it tougher by losing important players.

Everton were handed a record 10-point deduction by the Premier League on Friday and things could potentially get worse for the Merseyside club.

The Toffees were punished with an instant 10-point deduction by the Premier League for breaches of the division’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, which leaves Sean Dyche’s side down in 19th place on four points.

According to the Daily Mail, things could get even worse for Everton as other English clubs are considering legal action against the Toffees.

Burnley, Leicester and Leeds – who have all been relegated from the Premier League in recent years – are understood to be preparing a legal claim for £100 million each, which is based on the loss of Premier League income as a result of Everton staying up ahead of them.

The clubs are unlikely to win their case but in a future where they do, Everton could face another deduction if they are unable to pay the sum of money asked for.

The automatic punishment for a Premier League club for entering administration is nine points, although it is unclear as to whether the Toffees would be placed in that position, the potential of this series of events playing out is there.
