Thanksgiving weekend means that another week has passed where Sir Jim Ratcliffe hasn’t been able to take his place at Man United’s top table.

It’s unlikely to come as any surprise to supporters of the club who’ve been waiting for an age to see some type of takeover scenario come to fruition.

Until everything has been signed, sealed and delivered, fans would be forgiven for thinking that there could be an 11th hour hitch, although discussions do appear to be far enough down the line now for that not to be the case. It would simply seem to be a case of dotting the final i’s and crossing the t’s.

However, the longer term scenario for Sir Jim might not be as straightforward as he and everyone else was hoping for either.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe

“I assume he (Sir Jim) wouldn’t be coming in with 25 per cent and sporting control as the end goal,” David Ornstein said in a special Q&A for The Athletic (subscription required).

“That makes me think there will be a roadmap of sorts but, if so, I’m not sure if that will be formal, or not at this stage.

“The complexity and time it is taking to finalise the initial deal suggest any further steps will take way longer to put in place.”

Thoughts of any further business are, frankly, discussions that need to be had another time.

Sir Jim and his incoming team have a number of issues to concern themselves firstly, just in order to get the club back on an even keel in a sporting sense.

If they’re able to do so over the course of the next 12-18 months, then those discussions regarding a phased full takeover may be worthwhile.

Man United’s problems this season have been multiple and it’s difficult to dissect exactly where the problems lie, though The Athletic’s David Ornstein has attempted to do just that.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, the esteemed journalist suggested that a perfect storm around Old Trafford has contributed to their current malaise.

Ornstein didn’t point the finger at one thing in particular but instead noted that a mixture of overspending – which would’ve been sanctioned by the owners – as well as player identification and the acquiring of certain players have all played a part.

Mason Mount now reportedly looks highly likely to leave Chelsea this summer, with Manchester United showing the strongest interest in the potential transfer.

Man Utd currently seem to be Mount’s preferred destination as well, despite Liverpool and Arsenal also showing an interest in him in recent times as his future has continued to be thrown into major doubt.

See below as The Athletic journalist David Ornstein tells Sky Sports about the latest developments on Mount’s future, with the Blues widely expected to cash in on the England international now rather than risk losing him on a free when his contract expires next summer…

United could do with a younger alternative to Christian Eriksen, who has never looked likely to be a long-term option for Erik ten Hag’s side, so the Red Devils will no doubt hope they remain in a strong position here.

Mount has been a key player for Chelsea until his struggles this term, but MUFC might also need a little more clarity on their ownership situation before this ambitious deal can go ahead.

Journalist David Ornstein claims that Manchester United might have to sell to buy in the coming summer transfer window.

The Mirror recently reported that Man United could land a deal with interested suitor Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

With the Glazers looking to sell the club, this could potentially have an impact on their club’s summer business.

That’s what Ornstein claimed when he spoke on the FIVE YouTube channel.

He stated, “So right now, Manchester United to my knowledge are not able to move on much at all. You speak to people around the club and there seems to be quite a clear sense that they might have to sell before they can buy, while there’s uncertainty over the ownership situation. It could take departures to free up the funds for acquisitions.”

This stance presented by the Athletic journalist certainly seems similar to a recent story involving the Red Devils.

TEAMtalk broke a story recently that the club were considering offers for midfielder Fred. However, the club are not desperate to offload him.

It appears that this could be the stance for the club next month when the window opens. If any major or significant bids come in for players that aren’t classified as essential then they could sanction some sales should the price be right.

Liverpool’s loss could very much be Brighton and Hove Albion’s gain if the Seagulls are able to get a deal for one Reds stalwart over the line this summer.

Jurgen Klopp seems to be looking to rebuild parts of his squad after the end of the 2022/23 campaign, with some players coming to the end of their contracts and others clearly surplus to requirements.

The official Liverpool website reported on Roberto Firmino’s departure this summer, whilst Forza Roma note Jose Mourinho’s interest in Joel Matip.

The Athletic (subscription required) also say that Arthur Melo, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita will all leave Anfield, which leaves quite the hole in the spine of the team.

To add to that list, David Ornstein tweeted late on Friday that James Milner, whose contract expires this summer, is being courted by Brighton.

Often seemingly maligned, Milner has been a real stalwart for the club, always giving of his best and rarely letting either his team-mates or Jurgen Klopp down.

At 37 years of age, it’s clear that he doesn’t have the stamina or the energy to play the fullest part in matches these days, thought he has still proved to be a reliable presence when needed.

He’ll surely end up moving on with the best wishes of the club and their supporters behind him, and if he’s able to extend his career for a season or two at Brighton, it would be no more than his professionalism deserves.

David Ornstein has issued an update on the contract situation of Mason Mount who is yet to come to an agreement with Chelsea over an extension.

Mount has been linked with moves away to a host of top European clubs such as Liverpool and Manchester United, per Ornstein himself with the 24-year old’s deal at Stamford Bridge set to run out in 2024.

The midfielder is also currently out through injury and released an update via his Instagram yesterday that he has undergone surgery on the issue, reiterating that he hopes to be back in action before the end of the season.

This has given fans hope that he may extend his deal at the club, and Ornstein spoke recently on the Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE YouTube channel about the player’s situation, saying that conversations will have been had between the player and the hierarchy over his future.

“Mason Mount will have been a player that came across Pochettino’s intrays during the managerial talks, and despite the well-documented situation that’s been reported in recent months [no agreement on new contract and talks have been parked till the summer], you can still have dialogue and conversations, and I revealed last week that Todd Boely and Mount have had in-person conversations.

Can Boehly convince Mount to stay at Stamford Bridge?

What was said to Mount was how much the club value him and that they do want to renew him. It’s a massive decision for both parties. Chelsea’s stance is that they will either renew or sell, but let’s not forget, the new manager that comes into Chelsea will have a big say on this matter.”

Crucial times ahead for Chelsea and Mount and time will tell whether or not the two can indeed come to an agreement over a new deal amid the heavy interest the midfielder is receiving, and understandably so.

This Friday sees the third and final deadline for the potential new owners of Man United to submit any further information, with the Glazer family now askingthat any interested bidders of the club must prove their source of wealth.

According to Bloomberg, Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe will also need to disclose who the ultimate beneficial owner of the club will be.

It could be seen as another delaying tactic from the Glazer’s, but that may not be the only worry that Man United fans will have on their minds, as The Athletic’s David Ornstein has described a potential nightmare scenario that has ‘every chance’ of occurring.

Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents Five podcast, Ornstein noted that:

“A really important point to make in this is that when Manchester United were floated by the Glazers on the New York Stock Exchange, they inserted a clause – a mechanism – that stated the most important and powerful shares, which are called Class B shares, can only be owned by the family themselves.

“Those Class B shares have 10 times more voting rights than the other shares, which are called Class A shares. If any of the Class B shares are sold by the family to non-family members, such as Sheikh Jassim or Jim Ratcliffe, US investment vehicles, then they will convert into Class A shares – with 10 times less voting rights.

“So there’s every chance that members of the Glazer family will sell to Sir Jim Ratcliffe, or whoever, that will take that person over 50 per cent to become the majority shareholder – but not of the most powerful shares.

“That means that even if Joel and Avram Glazer stay with 20 per cent, then that 20 per cent of powerful Class B shares could make them more influential than the majority shareholder and in greater control.

“Unless that mechanism, that rule, that clause that was brought in when they floated the club on the Stock Exchange, is either revoked or changed.”

Manchester United’s transfer activity is largely up in the air at the moment, and while the future of some stars look set in stone, it may take a bit longer than planned to make it a reality.

The Athletic’s, David Ornstein is reporting that one such star, the man in question being Jesse Lingard, will now being staying at Manchester United in January and wants to fight for his place in Ralf Rangnick’s team.

This comes as Ornstein is also reporting a cooling of interest from one of Lingard’s chief pursuers, Newcastle United.

Following Newcastle’s Saudi-backed PIF takeover earlier in the season, The Magpies have been largely tipped to spend big in January in order to steer clear of the relegation zone that continues to loom over the club.

And Lingard, who in January will have six months left on his Man United contract, has widely been rumoured to be one such player the club were targeting.

However, The Athletic’s report now indicates that Newcastle do not intend to pursue the 29-year-old, instead opting to pursue alternative options.

Lingard’s value is estimated to be £22m by transfermark, but due to the attacking midfielder’s contract situation the likelihood is a deal for him will be far cheaper.

This may yet open the door for West Ham United to make a January move for him. Lingard was on loan with The Hammers last season and enjoyed a successful loan spell, scoring nine and assisting five in 16 league appearances.

Lingard’s cryptic message on Instagram in November

David Moyes and Lingard are known to have developed a good relationship, and a cryptic message from Lingard earlier in the season on his Instagram indicated that he may want the move to happen as well.

The first weekend of the 2021/22 Premier League season is upon us and, as yet, Harry Kane has still not made an intended switch to Tottenham’s opening day opponents, Manchester City.

It seems clear that the marksman sees his future away from White Hart Lane, though he’s stopped short of going on strike or trying to force his way out.

Pep Guardiola’s swashbucklers will surely be odds on for the title again with Kane in their ranks, but Daniel Levy is standing firm at this point.

Unless an offer in the region of £150m is forthcoming, then there’s little chance of Kane leaving north London.

Spurs fans who are worried about their striker’s commitment needn’t be so, however.

Daniel Levy and Harry Kane

“Harry Kane, we know, wants to go, and that desire remains undiminished as far as we know,” The Athletic’s David Ornstein said on Sky Sports News, cited by HITC.

“But if that transfer window closes without Harry Kane having moved, everybody I speak to says that he is so fixated on breaking Premier League goalscoring records, on playing for England in the World Cup qualifiers and getting to the 2022 World Cup, then he will knuckle down and he will continue to play well and score goals, however frustrated he is.”

With two weeks still to go until the transfer window officially shuts, there’s still time to do a deal, but it won’t leave Tottenham much time to replace their talisman.

It was a sour moment on an otherwise exhilarating night for English football fans.

As always seems to be the way, a minority attempt to spoil things for the majority, and when an England fan shone a laser pen in Kasper Schmeichel’s face as Harry Kane stepped up to take a penalty, it was a low point in the tournament.

The English FA might consider themselves very lucky if David Ornstein’s assumptions are accurate.

The Athletic’s correspondent was taking part in a discussion on Sky Sports News, and suggested that a fine was likely to be the sum total of any punishment rather than the Three Lions having to play behind closed doors.
