Erik Ten Hag reportedly blocked a transfer approach from Manchester United to Aston Villa for goalkeeper Emi Martinez.

That’s according to recent reports, which claim the Dutch manager vetoed the club’s attempts to sign Martinez.
In need of a new number one following David De Gea’s decision to leave the club after 12 years in the summer, United ended up signing Andre Onana from Inter Milan.

However, Martinez was thought to be the club’s preferred choice before Ten Hag blocked any attempts to bring the 2022 World Cup winner to Old Trafford.

It is not known whether or not Villa would have accepted United’s offer, or even if the player would have agreed to the move, but it is certainly nice to know that your number one is so highly rated… That’s if you’re a Villa fan, of course.

Nottingham Forest have doubled their lead over Aston Villa in their Premier League clash at the City Ground and it came through a huge error from Emi Martinez. 

Steve Cooper’s side took the lead in the match after just five minutes as Ola Aina produced a beautiful strike from outside of the box and it didn’t take long in the second 45 for the home side to double their lead.

With 47 minutes on the clock, Orel Mangala hit a hopeful strike at the Aston Villa goal and a huge error from Martinez allowed the ball to drop over the line to make it 2-0 to Forest.

French fans have not forgotten the actions of Aston Villa star Emi Martinez following Argentina’s World Cup win over France last December. 

The goalkeeper held a baby doll with a picture of Mbappe’s face stuck to it during the World Cup winners parade in Argentina after the tournament and people in France made their feelings clear on the red carpet of the Ballon d’Or ceremony on Monday night in Paris.

As Martinez arrived, the Villa star had the name “Mbappe” chanted at him whilst others were heard booing.

The goalkeeper didn’t react to his reception as he took photos on his way into the ceremony.

Aston Villa came out as 1-0 winners against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge earlier today as Mauricio Pochettino’s continues to have a struggling start to his career with The Blues.

Gusto was sent off for a rash tackle early in the second half and Ollie Watkins scored with a brilliant finish in the 73rd minute to win it for Villa.

Aston Villa keeper Emi Martinez had a brilliant game in goal as he made 4 crucial saves to deny Chelsea.

The Argentinean who has built himself a reputation for winding up opposition players and fans was at it again during the game.

The goalkeeper was spotted time wasting on a number of occasions, which certainly managed to get under the home crowd’s skin. The Athletic reporter Tanswell shared it on X:

“Emi Martinez is winding up the Chelsea crowd, not that he cares. Every other free-kick he has taken ages. The moment Jackson stands in front of the ball, but with his back turned, Martinez smashes it against his legs. Jackson booked for stopping a quick free-kick. Artful.”

With Chelsea and Man United having recently agreed to a deal for Mason Mount to move to Old Trafford, the two Premier League giants are now set to battle it out for another big name star.

It’s all systems go at Chelsea as they look to rid themselves of a number of players in order that they can stay on the right side of Financial Fair Play.

What’s turned into a mass exodus from Stamford Bridge shows no signs of abating at this point in time.

The Red Devils on the other hand appear to be in something of a transfer no man’s land at present. Though they are able to get deals done, as they’ve shown with Mount, there doesn’t appear to be a figure that can be put on what money Erik ten Hag will have available.

For now, that probably means operating within their means until the Dutchman is told otherwise. Player sales will clearly therefore benefit the club as they go looking to secure new signings.

One of those could be Aston Villa’s World Cup winning goalkeeper, Emi Martinez.

It’s clear that Man United are wasting no time in the transfer market this summer as they look to make the purchases that will see the Red Devils continue the progress that Erik ten Hag has made during the short time he’s been at the club.

Although the Dutchman is being hamstrung somewhat by the takeover saga still not appearing to be close to a satisfactory conclusion, money for potential purchases can be raised by sales.

One area where it’s abundantly clear that United need to improve is between the posts. David de Gea has been poor for a while now, and even if the Spaniard decides to stay at the club – which isn’t clear – he can’t possibly expect to be the No.1 for much longer.

According to Football Insider sources, Aston Villa are bracing themselves for a bid from the Old Trafford outfit for their World Cup winning goalkeeper, Emi Martinez.

After winning the game’s top prize and having a sound season at club level, it’s no wonder that United would be considering his services.

Journalist Dean Jones thinks that Aston Villa could sell Emi Martinez for a world record goalkeeper fee should they receive interest in him this summer.

The stock of Martinez has risen dramatically this season, none more so than during the World Cup in the winter, where he was instrumental in Argentina’s road to glory as he also won the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award.

With rumours from Argentinian journalist Gaston Edul (via Birmingham Live) saying that Martinez is attracting interest from the likes of Tottenham and Chelsea, an exit for the 30-year old this summer cannot be ruled out.

Martinez spreads himself well to make a crucial save from Marcus Rashford’s effort

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Jones thinks that the Villains could make some serious money for Martinez as a result of his top form this season.

“Martinez has got a decision to make over his Aston Villa future and at the same time, Villa have got an opportunity to make a lot of money on him. I mean, he would become one of the most expensive goalkeepers ever if he was to leave in the next transfer window. So there’s a lot to be taken into account there.”
