Eddie Howe has worked wonders at Newcastle United in a relatively short space of time, and the Toon Army would’ve been incandescent if the former Bournemouth man decided to throw his hat into the ring for the England manager’s job when Gareth Southgate vacates.

That’s expected to be as soon as the end of Euro 2024, unless the Three Lions win their first major title since the 1966 World Cup, in which case Southgate will surely find it much harder to walk away.

Fortunately for anyone of a Magpies persuasion, Howe is going nowhere according to The Telegraph (subscription required).

By effectively ruling himself out of that particular race, it only leaves two standout candidates.

One of those is Nottingham Forest’s 43-year-old manager, Steve Cooper, who worked successfully at various England youth levels between 2014 and 2019, before taking up his first club managerial post at Swansea – the pre-cursor to his appointment at Forest.

The other candidate named by The Telegraph is ex-Chelsea man, Graham Potter.

As he’s not taken up any role since he was sacked by the Blues during the season, any approach from the FA could be dealt with swiftly one way or the other.

That would surely be a preference for all concerned, as the last things Southgate would want is for anything to distract from the next stage of England’s eternal quest on the pitch.

It’s not unfair to suggest that Burnley manager, Vincent Kompany, knows a player when he sees one, and the former Man City ace did try to sign an enigmatic star during the summer for the Clarets.

Having breezed through the 2022/23 Championship season, Burnley did get a taste of life at the top level when being despatched from the FA Cup by Kompany’s former club, coincidentally their opponents for their 2023/24 season opener.

The outcome of that game was the same, and two more defeats, against Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur, have seen Burnley rooted to the bottom of the English top-flight.

Their only moment of joy in the current campaign so far is an EFL cup win against Nottingham Forest, who are their next Premier League opponents.

It is Forest’s former England international, and £75,000 p/w (Capology) star, Jonjo Shelvey, that Burnley registered an interest in during the summer, along with Leeds United and Sheffield United according to The Telegraph (subscription required).

The outlet also note that the 31-year-old has decided that he wants to try his luck in the Turkish Super Lig, and a move to emerging side, Rizespor.

Given the way in which Shelvey fell out with Forest manager, Steve Cooper, it’s believed over a decision to leave him as a sub when the Midlanders visited Anfield, Kompany has likely dodged a bullet.

With less than a week to go until the end of the summer transfer window it’s time for all clubs to tie up their loose ends and get their business over the line, and Tottenham have been handed a huge boost in their pursuit of Nottingham Forest star Brennan Johnson.

The 22-year-old is believed to be rated at about the £45m mark by the Midlanders, and whether or not Spurs are willing to pay that price, Football Insider report that there’s a very good chance the player ends up in north London for one specific reason.

Brennan Johnson to Tottenham?

Forest have been known as a good footballing side under Steve Cooper, and since Ange Postecoglou has taken over at Spurs, they too have been winning new plaudits for their more expansive style of play.

That was evidenced in their 2-0 win at Bournemouth in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off, whilst Forest can count themselves unlucky to lose by the odd goal in five at Old Trafford after giving up an early two-goal lead.

Johnson is an integral part of what Forest are about so it’s understandable why they would want to hold onto him, however, Football Insider sources say that he’s told his close friends that he wants to join the Postecoglou revolution.

As we get closer to the end of the window, that surely gives Spurs the upper hand in negotiations.

Nottingham Forest managed to secure their Premier League status by the skin of their teeth last season, and credit must go to Steve Cooper and his side for believing that it was possible right until the bitter end.

The City Ground was bouncing at times last season but the good times in England’s top division looked set to end until wins over Brighton, Southampton and Arsenal in their final few games saw them climb out of relegation trouble.

Retaining their top-flight status allows the club to continue to dream big, and that certainly appears to be what they’re doing with one particular transfer.

According to El Futbolero, the club are looking to do a deal to bring Alexis Sanchez back to the Premier League.

The Chilean was inspired as an Arsenal player, but after he made the move to Man United in a deal which took Henrikh Mkhitaryan to the Gunners, his reported £505,000 per week salary (per The Sun) appeared to weight heavy on his shoulders.

He was never close to being the same player at Old Trafford as he was at the Emirates Stadium, and it was no real surprise when he was moved on.

That he would consider moving back to England and to a club with no European football to speak of hints at how far this former Inter Milan and Barcelona star has fallen, with the greatest respect.

If Forest can pull off a one-year deal, however, Sanchez might just surprise us all.

The clear out at Chelsea is showing no signs of abating, and yet another star could soon be heading for the exit door.

With Mauricio Pochettino about to start his tenure in west London, Todd Boehly still hasn’t finished with his fire sale. There could potentially be even more outgoings before things settle down, though one or two welcome new signings could change the mood around Stamford Bridge.

The latest name being linked with a switch is Callum Hudson-Odoi. According to The Guardian (subscription required), Nottingham Forest could be willing to pay £15m for a player that the outlet note is likely to leave this summer.

At 22 years of age, Hudson-Odoi has been at Chelsea for his entire career, including as youth player, save for a season-long loan at Bayer Leverkusen which amounted to nothing in the end.

To move away from that will surely be a wrench for the player, however, the situation at Chelsea isn’t really a healthy one for youngsters that aren’t, realistically, going to be given a chance in the first-team anytime soon.

In today’s market £15m is a steal, and Forest could well be the beneficiaries.

Steve Cooper’s side stayed up in the Premier League thanks to a late-season surge, and landing someone of Hudson-Odoi’s quality will surely help the Midlands-based outfit from suffering a similar fate in 2023/24.

With West Ham looking likely to sell their captain, Declan Rice, this season as a bare minimum, David Moyes will need to strengthen his squad, and one of the Hammers targets could be sold because of his current club’s Financial Fair Play situation.

Having just won the Europa Conference League final and thereby earning automatic qualification into next season’s Europa League, Moyes certainly won’t want to change things too much.

However, the expected funds that a Rice sale would bring in – The Telegraph (subscription required) suggested a fee around the £92m mark – would allow significant rebuilding in certain areas of the squad.

According to The Athletic (subscription required), the Hammers face competition from Everton and Aston Villa for one of their targets.

Brennan Johnson to West Ham?

Steve Cooper would surely be loathe to lose the talents of Brennan Johnson, though it appears that FFP is going to start to bite every club hard, not just Nottingham Forest.

A reported £30m offer from Brentford clearly hasn’t interested the Midlands-based club, and it remains to be seen if the east Londoners or any other parties are willing to significantly up that amount in order to sign the exciting 22-year-old.

It’s also worth speculating on the dangerous game that Forest appear to be playing at this point.

Whilst it’s understandable that they wouldn’t want to lose one of their best players, if he’s priced out of the market and then FFP forces the club into a sale in any event, his resale value would be much less than it is at present.
