talkSPORT pundit Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed that if Gareth Southgate fails to win EURO 2024, he has to go.

Agbonlahor believes all England fans would agree that failure to win EURO 2024 would see the end of Southgate’s tenure, saying that the “semi final is not enough”.

Speaking on possible replacements, Pep Guardiola was mentioned, with Agbonlahor making the point “how do we know that Pep hasn’t done everything he wants to do in club football”, after having successful stints with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and now Manchester City.

Southgate has managed to qualify for EURO 2024 unbeaten, topping their group on 20 points, with six wins and two draws in their eight matches played.

However all eyes are now on the tournament next summer, as many believe this to be England’s best chance at silverware in recent years.

Southgate since taking the England job in 2016, has led the Three Lions to a World Cup Semi-final in 2018, and the EURO’s final in 2021, but the next step is to go on and win something with this talented group.

If he fails to do so, questions will be asked as the timeframe closes for England to win a major honour with this golden generation group of players.

talkSPORT pundit Jamie O’Hara has called England’s latest performance a “bore fest”, after drawing 1-1 with North Macedonia in their final EURO Qualifying game.

O’Hara said this game against North Macedonia was “the most boring game I’ve watched this year” after England struggled to put more than one past their opponents.

He also went on to say he didn’t even watch Friday’s game against Malta where England won 2-0, saying “what’s the point” when speaking about it.

England have qualified as group winners for EURO 2024, as they would’ve been expected too. They won six and drew two of their eight games played, finishing on 20 points.

However these two recent games against Malta and North Macedonia have left a lot to be desired, especially in terms of performance.

After an early own goal against Malta, it then took the Three Lions until the 75th minute to secure the victory with a Harry Kane goal, as they struggled to create clear cut chances against their opposition.

This was evident again in the North Macedonia game, only scored one goal which came from an own goal, and only recording two shots on target despite having 75% possession.

BBC Sport have posted a stat, that England have gone their last two qualifying campaigns unbeaten, with 14 wins and four draws.

England topped their EURO 2024 Qualifying group, winning six and drawing two of their eight games played. This includes results such as a 7-0 win against North Macedonia, a 3-1 win against Italy and a 2-0 win against Ukraine.

The Three Lions also topped their World Cup 2022 Qualifying group, winning eight and drawing two of their 10 games played. This included a 2-1 win against second placed Poland, as well as 5-0 victories against both Albania and Andorra, and a 10-0 thrashing against San Marino.

Since taking over in September 2016, Southgate has led the Three Lions to a World Cup semi final in 2018, losing to Croatia in extra time, and a EURO’s final in 2021, losing on penalties to Italy.

Many are suggesting this could be Southgate’s last competition in charge of England, especially if he fails to deliver a major title by winning EURO 2024.

The belief is that England currently have a golden generation of footballers, and that this group has to win something of note, having failed at previous tournaments such as the EURO 2020 final, and losing in the 2022 World Cup to France despite being the better side.

Gareth Southgate has decided to rest England captain Harry Kane, giving Ollie Watkins the nod upfront, and handing Rico Lewis his Three Lions debut.

Southgate has decided to make six changes to his England XI that beat Malta 2-0 on Friday, with Kieran Trippier, Fikayo Tomori, Jordan Henderson, Conor Gallagher, Marcus Rashford and Harry Kane all making way.

Replacing them in the starting lineup to face North Macedonia are Kyle Walker (who captains the side), Rico Lewis, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Ollie Watkins and Jack Grealish.

This is a slightly more attacking lineup than the team that faced Malta on Friday, looking like we could see Phil Foden in the number 10 rather than out wide.

Lewis comes in at left back, who has the ability to invert into midfield and join Alexander-Arnold and Rice in midfield, giving Foden that license to stay further forward with the likes of Saka, Grealish and Watkins.

The defence is then made up of Walker, Maguire, Guehi and Lewis as previously mentioned, with Pickford between the sticks.

Though he’s yet to taste victory in a major tournament, Gareth Southgate has come as close as any manager of England since Sir Alf Ramsay back in 1966.

A devastating loss in the quarter final of the 2022 World Cup to eventual runners-up, France, followed on from losing the 2020 European Championship final to Italy and being knocked out by Croatia at the semi-final stage of the 2018 World Cup.

So near yet so far was never better evidenced, and yet Southgate’s unfinished business is clearly something that is still driving him on to ever greater heights.

So great, in fact, that it appears he won’t rest until the Three Lions are the best in the world.

Gareth Southgate

“If you’re going to be the top-ranked team, there’s no room for sloppiness or casualness,” he was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

“If we’re going to be a top team then the level of performance has got to be spot on every time.

“Am I driven by being ranked number one? Yes, because ultimately you achieve that through consistency and you’ve got to play well in the tournaments as well because the ranking points are higher in the tournaments.”

Under Southgate, there’s little doubt that England have improved as a football team.

That’s as much to do with the manager making good on his promise to promote the talent that is playing well rather than relying on the big names, albeit, of late, he has started to fall into that trap a little more.

Whether or not he carries on in the post through to the 2026 World Cup is unclear at this stage, and perhaps that question will be better able to be answered when Southgate and his backroom team can analyse and assess just how well – or not – things have gone for them in Germany next summer.

England manager Gareth Southgate has been blasted by pundit Graeme Souness for his decision regarding Raheem Sterling and Jack Grealish.

Graeme Souness, a former Premier League manager, has asserted that Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling is ‘more dangerous’ than his England teammate Jack Grealish, especially after being overlooked by England manager Gareth Southgate for the fifth consecutive time.

Despite Sterling’s stellar performances for Chelsea at the beginning of the season, he was once again omitted from the Three Lions squad. This exclusion means he will continue training at Cobham under manager Mauricio Pochettino to maintain his fitness during the international break, where England has started by defeating Malta 2-0.

Souness, in a piece for the Daily Mail, emphasised Sterling’s intimidating presence in international tournaments, suggesting that players facing him would prefer to play against Grealish, considering the fear factor Sterling brings.

“I read Simon Jordan’s comments regarding Raheem Sterling on these pages this week, and his belief that the Chelsea winger has justifiably been left out of the England squad on form.

“OK, let’s look at it a different way. If you’re a full back, would you rather play against Sterling or Jack Grealish? I think 10 out of 10 would rather play against Grealish. Sterling is more dangerous than him,” Souness stated to the Daily Mail.

Sterling has four goals and an assist in 12 league appearances this season. Meanwhile Grealish has only started three times in seven league appearances and in that time he’s managed just one assist.

The Manchester City winger is struggling to get into Pep Guardiola’s team ever since Jeremy Doku was introduced.

Gareth Southgate continues to call up players who are out of form for their club. That’s a formula the Three Lions mustn’t rely on in the summer when the Euro 2024 tournament gets underway.

Gareth Southgate is confident Marcus Rashford came away from England’s match against Malta unscathed.

The Manchester United winger, who started during the Three Lions 2-0 victory over Malta on Friday evening, was subbed off through injury in the second-half after colliding with teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Chelsea’s Cole Palmer replaced the United attacker for the game’s final 30 minutes but Southgate has eased concerns over the winger’s latest problem.

“I think he’s probably OK,” the England boss said, as quoted by Simon Peach.

“But we just thought given the nature of the collision it was a chance to get Cole (Palmer) into the game. I haven’t assessed too much but I think he was OK when he came off.”

Rashford’s injury would have undoubtedly caused concern with Erik Ten Hag, who is dangerously close to running out of options on the left wing.

Although the Dutchman has Jadon Sancho among his options, with the 23-year-old not expected to play for the club again following a public falling out, Ten Hag would not want to be in a situation where he is forced to rely solely on 19-year-old Alejandro Garnacho.

Therefore, suggestions that Rashford is likely to be fit and able to immediately return to action for his club once the season resumes next weekend will come as a minor boost to United in what has otherwise been a disappointing campaign.

The England starting lineup to face Malta in EURO Qualifying Group game is out, including Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden in attack, and Trent Alexander-Arnold starts in midfield.

Gareth Southgate has made five changes from the side that beat Italy 3-1 last month, with John Stones, Kyle Walker, Declan Rice, Kalvin Phillips and Jude Bellingham not in the side.

In their place, Marc Guehi, Fikayo Tomori, Conor Gallagher, Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold come in.

Harry Kane captains the Three Lions, in what looks to be a 4-3-3 with Alexander-Arnold in midfield, and possibly Marc Guehi filling in at right back, with Kieran Trippier on the left.

England sit top of EURO Qualifying Group C with 16 points, winning five and drawing one of their six games played so far.

A win tonight would secure England topping the group, giving them a better draw come the tournament.

England face North Macedonia on Monday in their final group game, where Southgate could give some youngsters a chance if the result is good tonight.
