Sheffield United have officially had the worst start to a season in Premier League history.

Paul Heckingbottom’s side got thumped 5-0 by Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday afternoon despite Mikel Arteta making a number of significant changes to his squad.

This confirmed the Blades as the worst team in the Premier League ever after 10 games, they have only amassed one point.

The 5-0 defeat to the Gunners hasn’t even been their worst loss so far, they were thrashed 8-0 by Newcastle just a few weeks ago.

Takehiro Tomiyasu scores Arsenal’s fifth

However, although they sit at the bottom with one point, fans may feel like they were hard done by in some of their games.

They put up a good fight against Manchester City, conceded two injury-time goals to Tottenham and had an almost identical situation occur against Manchester United.

Only one other team in the history of the league had one point or fewer after ten games, the Sheffield United side of 2020/21.

They finished bottom of the table that season, 16 points off safety.

Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom has slammed the unacceptable way his players allowed Newcastle to out-run them in yesterday’s 8-0 demolition at Bramall Lane.

Eddie Howe’s men were on fire as they put eight past the Blades, giving them one of their finest performances of the Premier League era.

But for Sheffield United it was a miserable evening and their manager was understandably critical of his players afterwards.

“The first half we had to change the way we wanted to play, set up a bit differently,” said the 46-year-old. “We went in 3-0 down and that was purely down to our organisation.

“We made changes at half time to chase the game and regardless of mistakes, mistakes lead to goals. The things we have to put right are the bits off the ball.

“We understand the league we are in, we’ve lost three points regardless but as long as learn from the nature of the defeat and what went wrong then all we have lost is three points.

“You could see moments where Newcastle out-fought us and out-ran us. That is not acceptable. We want to compete. There is still a level of competition we expect. We know they have top class players but there is an expectation from us that we are here to compete.

“We prepare for moments like this, we prepare for coming up against top teams and we prepare for our performances not being good enough. Our season won’t be defined by this game so long as we take the things from it we need to and address things.”

Sheffield United are reportedly considering making a change of manager already after a poor start to life in the Premier League.

The Blades won promotion from the Championship last season, but have yet to win a single game back in the top flight, losing four of their opening five games of this season.

According to the Daily Mail, Sheffield United’s board now seem to be giving growing consideration to sacking Paul Heckingbottom and replacing him with their former manager Chris Wilder.

Wilder did fine work at Bramall Lane and it could be worth bringing back this experienced head to get them through what is sure to be a challenging season.

Sheffield United boss did not hold back in his post-match presser as he went on an incredible rant about the poor refereeing.

He saw his side come close to an away win only for Spurs to score two goals in two minutes in the 98th and 100th minute to complete a stunning comeback.

He accused the referee of threatening them to give goalkeeper a second yellow card for time wasting if he does not kick the ball long each time.

“Something needs to be done now. And this is not me moaning, I said it at half-time and when we were 1-0 up as well. The focus is on time-wasting, so the referees are dictating how we play.”

“We set up from the back, then Spurs push forward and then that dictates how we play. But no, we’re just told to ‘play long’. The answer back to me was ‘well kick long then’.”

“We work all week on how we want to play and the refs are dictating to us how we play the game. It can’t happen, but it’s happening. They’ve got obsessed about time-wasting and yellow cards.”

“Wes got a yellow card for handling outside the box and then got threatened with a sending off [for time-wasting]. You can’t do it, the officiating is appalling and it’s not about the football decisions, it’s just game management.”

“They just do not know what they’re doing. The people who are directing our game have not got a clue about our game. They don’t know football.”

“To sum it all up we get Ollie McBurnie sent off for telling the referee someone is pulling his shirt. We’ve just seen someone lead with an elbow into our goalkeeper who needs stitches and that’s the same offence. What’s going on, seriously what’s going on with our game?”

West Ham have a season-defining Europa Conference League final ahead of them this week before turning their attentions back to the summer transfer window, pre-season and then domestic duties for the 2023/24 campaign.

It’s not clear if David Moyes will still be in charge come next season, with reasons why he could both stay or go depending on next Wednesday’s result.

Should the Hammers win their first European final in 47 years, the Scot could bow out on a high, but equally, if they were beaten by Fiorentina, that could re-ignite the fire for Moyes to push ahead in 23/24 and turn things around just as he did when returning to the club second time around.

Premier League new boys Sheffield United’s only concern is being able to sign players that will keep them in the English top-flight, and to that end, one West Ham flop is apparently on their radar.

It hasn’t been that long since Turkish side, Besiktas, made Arthur Masuaku’s loan move from the Hammers permanent, but according to Takvim, the left-back is a target for Paul Heckingbottom.

Hammers supporters will surely have something to say about that given that Masuaku’s best moment in a West Ham shirt was a late, and slightly fortuitous winner against Chelsea.

Much of the remainder of his career at the London Stadium was uneventful, the player making only 49 total appearances (including as sub) in the three seasons he was at the club, per WhoScored.
