Tottenham Hotspur need to be on their guard for an approach from Barcelona for one of their players in January.

The north Londoners could provide the key to unlocking the Catalan’s current issues, exacerbated by the recent injury to talented midfielder, Gavi.

The effervescent youngster won’t play again this season, and is likely to miss Euro 2024 as a result of the knee injury that he suffered in a meaningless qualifier – given that La Roja had already qualified from their group as champions.

If there is to be a saving grace, then it is that the next transfer window is just around the corner and, according to Mundo Deportivo, La Liga are giving the Catalan club some leeway in terms of new signings precisely because of what’s happened to Gavi.

The outlet note that it’s Spurs’ Gio Lo Celso that is at the top of Barcelona’s wish list once the window opens for business on January 1.

Giovani Lo Celso of Tottenham

He was favoured by Xavi in the summer, but the club’s financial situation conspired against them and the player never arrived.

It appears that they’ll push hard again in the new year, in the hope that the player’s will and Ange Postecoglou’s acquiescence sees the deal go through without too much trouble.

Inside Spain is a weekly instalment brought to you by Football España, providing an insight into all of the major stories coming out of the rich and intense climes of La Liga and beyond.

The injury crisis across football took several victims during this international break, but the anterior cruciate ligament tear suffered by Gavi felt particularly cruel. The 19-year-old was having a monstruous season, starting for Barcelona and Spain, but will now miss the rest of the club season, the Euros and the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The question for Barcelona is whether they try to replace him. Sporting Director Deco has explained that that is ‘impossible’ on the market, but Barcelona can bring in a loan signing for up to 80% of Gavi’s wages until the end of the season without salary limit restrictions.

So far the debate is whether they should try and persuade Tottenham Hotspur to part with the almost unused Giovani Lo Celso on loan, or bring forward the transfer of Vitor Roque. The 18-year-old Brazilian striker will join for €30m plus €31m in variables next summer, but they don’t have a back up for the creaking legs of Robert Lewandowski.

Meanwhile Real Madrid have lost Vinicius Junior until February and Eduardo Camavinga until mid-January, to add to a long-term injury list already containing Eder Militao, Thibaut Courtois, Arda Guler and Aurelien Tchouameni.

Yet the talk about replacements in Madrid is quiet – at least for the players. Conflicting information continues to leak out about Carlo Ancelotti and the potential for him to take over the Brazil job next summer, but Los Blancos have contacted Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi about a potential vacancy. He is added to an impressive list of candidates already containing Xabi Alonso.

Elsewhere, Real Betis are negotiating with Leeds United for midifelder Marc Roca, who has been excellent since arriving. West Ham are interested in Celta Vigo defender Oscar Mingueza, and Sevilla are after Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi.

In less frivolous news, the public prosecutor has requested a sentence of nine years behind bars and a fine of €150k for Dani Alves if they get a guilty conviction against the Brazilian for rape. Meanwhile former Sevilla and Ajax midfielder Tarik Oulida will escape jail time entirely after sexually assaulting his own six-year-old daughter.

Barcelona is interested in signing Tottenham midfielder Giovani Lo Celso in January after Gavi’s injury.

The 19-year-old suffered a devastating injury on Sunday evening when he tore his anterior cruciate ligament during Spain’s Euro qualifier against Georgia.

Barcelona confirmed that he will have to undergo surgery for the tear and will likely be ruled out for eight to ten months as he recovers.

He will not only miss the Olympics in Paris but will also miss Spain’s entire Euro 2024 campaign.

Gavi has been a rock for Barcelona over the past two seasons and his absence will be a real blow for Xavi’s side.

A replacement is badly needed and according to Mundo Deportivo, the club could make a loan mover for Tottenham’s Lo Celso.

The Catalan club were reportedly interested in the 27-year-old during the summer, but no move materialised in the end.

The Argentinian midfielder impressed during his loan spell at Villarreal last season but doesn’t seem to have a future in Ange Postecoglou’s setup.

However, this could change after the injury of James Maddison but with the English midfielder expected to be back in January, it could be the perfect opportunity for Xavi to get his man.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso has been linked with a move away from the club in recent weeks.

The 27-year-old was on loan at Villarreal last season and he was expected to leave the club permanently during the summer transfer window. However, he ended up staying after an impressive pre-season, but the 27-year-old has struggled for regular keep time so far.

There have been rumours that a player could be sold in January but a report via Fichajes claims that there has been a change of scenery and the player is now committed to the project at Tottenham.

Apparently, clubs like Barcelona are keeping tabs on the midfielder, but the player is not keen on an exit anytime soon.

The Argentine international wants to establish himself as a key player in the Premier League and Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has also expressed his desire to have the player in his squad.

Giovani Lo Celso with Tottenham

Lo Celso could add creativity and goals to the Tottenham attack and his versatility makes him an asset as well. The 27-year-old can operate as the central attacking midfielder as well as a winger.

He has proven himself in European football with a number of clubs and the South American will now look to make his mark in English football.

He has a contract with the North London club until the summer of 2025 and Tottenham will hope that he can be an important first-team player for them in the coming months.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou was keen to keep hold of Giovani Lo Celso this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano, but it could be that he’ll end up moving in January if he doesn’t play much between now and the winter window.

Writing in the Daily Briefing, Romano explained the situation surrounding Lo Celso, who hasn’t lived up to expectations during his time at Spurs, despite previously showing plenty of potential in his time in La Liga in spells with Real Betis and Villarreal.

According to Romano, Postecoglou was keen to keep Lo Celso around as an option for his squad, though it could still be that the Argentina international’s future will come into doubt when the transfer window opens again in the middle of the season.

It will be interesting to see if Lo Celso can get some playing time between now and January as he could end up being a useful option for THFC, but one imagines there’ll be plenty of interest in him if he does look for a move this January.

Giovani Lo Celso of Tottenham

“Giovani Lo Celso – Ange Postecoglou wanted to keep Lo Celso at the Tottenham, so I’d wait before mentioning any January move for Gio,” Romano said.

“For sure if he’s not going to play in the next weeks and months, that could be a possibility. But nothing has been decided yet.”

Ange Postecoglou has already become the Pied Piper on the blue and white half of north London, and one suspects that any decision he makes at this juncture will be welcomed by a fan base that have been fully won over by the straight-talking Australian.

Ahead of the north London derby on Sunday, Spurs find themselves in the enviable position of being able to look down on their fiercest rivals – albeit on goal difference only-, however, a win for the Gunners at home will see them leapfrog the Lilywhites.

One player that won’t be featuring for a revitalised Tottenham side is Giovani Lo Celso.

Giovani Lo Celso with Tottenham

The Argentinian might well have been sold in the summer but had been given a reprieve by Postecoglou.

Unfortunately, the form of James Maddison and Lo Celso’s subsequent injury has meant that there’s little chance of the Argentinian being able to get his place in the starting XI back.

According to Football Insider sources, the club could now decide to accept a January offer for him and cut their losses.

From the player’s own point of view, he would surely much prefer a scenario where he plays regularly, because even if he gets back to full fitness, Postecoglou is hardly likely to dump his side’s best player this season on the bench.

Tottenham defender Davinson Sanchez is closer than ever to completing a transfer to Galatasaray after failing to make Ange Postecoglou’s starting line up in the Premier League so far this season.

The Colombian defender has flopped in his time at Spurs and a departure is now on the cards, with sources close to the deal telling CaughtOffside that personal terms have already been agreed, with the two clubs now edging closer to a final agreement as well.

The transfer window has closed for clubs in the Premier League and most other leagues in Europe, but teams from Turkey are still able to make signings, so Sanchez could be one name on his way to Galatasaray fairly imminently.

Final details now need to be sorted out for the deal to go through, CaughtOffside understands, while two other names also face uncertain futures at Tottenham.

Tanguy Ndombele could also be an option for Galatasaray, though no concrete or advanced talks have taken place so far. The French midfielder spent last season on loan at Napoli and is out of Postecoglou’s technical project, so a solution is viewed as preferable for all parties in the coming weeks.

Although Ndombele has been offered to several European clubs, no concrete approach has taken place for him. Inter asked for information on the deal earlier in the summer, but the conditions of the possible deal weren’t considered suitable by the Nerazzurri, who favoured a move for Davy Klassen instead.

Tanguy Ndombele could still leave Tottenham

Some Saudi teams continue to show an interest in Ndombele, and if there won’t be time to positively close an agreement, Tottenham will work towards a possible farewell in January, given that they want to part ways with him at any cost.

Giovani Lo Celso is staying at Tottenham, despite interest from Real Betis in the summer. It remains the expectation that Lo Celso will struggle for regular playing time, especially after the signing of Brenan Johnson from Nottingham Forest.

Lo Celso will surely leave in January, even if a potential return to Betis during the winter window is almost impossible now: the Spanish club decided to complete a deal with Barca for Abde when they finally understood that Tottenham were not open to a loan with only buy option.

However, other Spanish clubs are also interested in Lo Celso and the Argentina international would be keen on a move back to La Liga if possible.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso has been linked with a move away from the club in recent weeks.

The 27-year-old Argentine international was on loan at Villarreal last season and he was linked with a number of Spanish clubs during the summer transfer window.

However, Tottenham did not agree on a deal to sell him before the Premier League transfer window closed.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Turkish outfit Galatasaray remain keen on signing the 27-year-old and they have been keeping tabs on him since July. However, the midfielder is still expected to stay at Tottenham because manager Ange Postecoglou wants to keep him at the club.

The 27-year-old reportedly impressed Postecoglou with his performances during pre-season and he could prove to be a useful option for the Australian manager.

Tottenham have employed a free-flowing attacking approach under their new manager this season and they have impressed with their performances so far. Lo Celso will add flair, technical ability and goals to the side in the final third.

He is versatile enough to operate as the central attacking midfielder as well as a winger. He could be an asset for Postecoglou in the coming months.

Tottenham signed James Maddison as their prime source of creativity earlier this summer but Postecoglou will need to rotate his squad in order to keep the players fresh throughout the season. Lo Celso could prove to be a quality understudy to the England international. He could also rotate with Dejan Kulusevski as the right-sided winger from time to time.

Although he might not be a regular starter, he could still be a very important squad player for Tottenham.

Ange Postecoglou has changed the mood around Tottenham in the short space of time he has been in North London and one Spurs star seems happy that the Australian has arrived.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the new Spurs manager is happy for Giovani Lo Celso to stay at the club and there has been positive feedback on the Argentine midfielder. The 27-year-old now looks set to stay in London for the season and it will only take a large bid for Spurs to change their stance on the player during the final week of the transfer window.

Lo Celso made his first appearance of the season on Saturday as he came off the bench in Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Bournemouth and there could be more to come over the coming months.

Antonio Conte sent Lo Celso out on loan twice during his time at the club, while his predecessors were not the biggest fans of the player either. Postecoglou looks set to give the Argentine a chance to prove himself as the midfielder has shown elsewhere the quality he possesses.

The 27-year-old has been at Tottenham for nearly four years now, so could this be the one where the Argentina international reaches his potential in a white shirt?
