Despite trailing for over 90 minutes, Wolverhampton Wanderers have managed to beat Tottenham Hotspur.

Welcoming Ange Postecoglou’s Lilywhites to Molineux for Saturday afternoon’s early Premier League kick-off, Gary O’Neil would have known his side would need to be at their best.

Licking their wounds following a 4-1 defeat against Chelsea on Monday night and struggling with two key injuries to Mickey van de Ven and James Maddison, Spurs came into today’s game in desperate need of a win too.

And fans would have been forgiven for expecting to take all three points after Brennan Johnson fired the away team into the lead after just three minutes.

However, the London giants failed to hold onto their lead after Pablo Sarabia scored an emphatic volley equaliser just inside injury time.

And Spurs’ worst fears were then confirmed when midfielder Mario Lemina popped up with a 97th-minute winner.

Check out the moment the former Bournemouth man completed an incredible comeback below.

It’s no secret that Liverpool are after quality midfield players after the late window losses of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho added to the departures of James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita.

If further proof were needed of the urgency to plug a hole in the middle of the park, Liverpool’s second-half performance at Chelsea provided it.

Though the Reds left Stamford Bridge with a point, the way in which the Blues were able to cut through the midfield with relative ease will have set the alarm bells ringing.

Jurgen Klopp and his recruitment team have tried, and failed, to secure both Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia during the current window, Chelsea being the beneficiary in each case.

With a swashbuckling Newcastle side up after their Anfield opener against Bournemouth, the needs of the manager have become more acute, and the quicker that a decent midfield option can be found, the better.

According to Foot Mercato, that player could be Wolves’ 29-year-old Mario Lemina.

Aside from the Midlands-based outfit, Lemina has also played in the English top-flight for Southampton and Fulham, and has gained experience at Juventus, Marseille, Nice and Galatasaray after beginning his career at Lorient.

That type of top level experience would hold the player in good stead if Liverpool intend to follow up their initial interest.

They don’t have long to make their ultimate decision of course, as the window closes for business in a fortnight’s time.

Watch Mario Lemina dive in on Fabinho during tonight’s clash between Liverpool and Wolves but the decision goes against the Brazilian.

Lemina seemed to lose control of the ball during the early stages of the second half, with the Gabonese lunging in to try and retrieve possession, only for him to go in on Fabinho with his studs high which you would assume results in a booking.

Somehow, the Wolves man got away with his actions, purely because the referee spotted the Brazilian standing on Lemina’s leg, which looked like his attempt of getting out of the way of Lemina’s challenge.

Fabinho was the man booked in the end, as fans witness yet another bizarre refereeing decision in the Premier League, with the scrutiny increasing further on the standard of officiating in the league.

Newcastle United reportedly look to be edging closer to an agreement to sign Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina.

The Gabon international spent last season on loan at Fulham and showed some potential in his time at Craven Cottage, though he seemingly remains out of the first-team picture at Southampton.

Reports now claim Newcastle’s recruitment chief has persuaded owner Mike Ashley to splash out on a deal for Lemina this summer.

It looks as though the Magpies are nearing an agreement on the 27-year-old, who would command wages of around £40,000 a week to move to St James’ Park.

It remains to be seen if this will prove to be the right move, but NUFC do seem to be showing some ambition in this summer’s transfer market.

Newcastle United fans will be used to seeing managers working under a fairly constricted budget, so it means the squad often needs to be patched up with cheap players who are also versatile to cover any injury issues.

A report from the Chronicle has indicated that Matty Longstaff could leave this summer on loan, and Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina is being lined up as a replacement.

Lemina is out-of-favour at Southampton and played 28 times during a loan spell for Fulham last season, but their relegation means a permanent move can’t happen.

He has one year left on his deal down on the South Coast so this would be their last chance to collect a decent fee for him, and it’s believed that Steve Bruce is a fan.

He can play anywhere in the centre of midfield or as a right-back so that versatility would be useful, while he’ll also bring plenty of energy and running to the team.

Alarm bells are always ringing when you sign a player from a relegated side but he’s a solid Premier League midfielder, and he would make sense as a rotation option next season.

Ultimately, what that will mean is that more money should be available from Mike Ashley even if the chairman is still intent on trying to sell the club as soon as practicable.

There’s certainly a huge rebuilding job on the pitch that needs to be undertaken, and one surprise name has already emerged as a potential summer target.

Southampton star, Mario Lemina, currently on loan at top-flight strugglers, Fulham, is wanted by Bruce according to The Guardian, though they do face competition for the Gabon international’s signature from West Ham.

The report states that Southampton don’t see a future for the player at the club and a fee in the region of £7m is being touted which, in today’s market, represents something of a bargain.

In the 58th minute of this afternoon’s Premier League clash between Arsenal and Fulham, the Gunners conceded a penalty after a reckless decision from summer signing Gabriel Magalhaes.

A VAR review followed, which looked into both the foul incident on Mario Lemina and a possible offside in the build-up as Magalhaes initially cut out a pass intended for Chelsea academy graduate Ola Aina.

The way in which Magalhaes rushed in to hack down Lemina, however minimal the contact, was never going to be ignored, but the review into offside was very tight, and eventually waved off.

Josh Maja stepped up to the spot and fired the ball into the roof of the net to give the Cottagers the lead, offering them a late relegation escape lifeline after four consecutive defeats.

Although it’s taken a ridiculous interpretation of the handball ruling for the IFAB to finally see common sense in one of their rules, at least things are about to change.

Better late than never you might say.

MORE: ASTONISHING admission by ex-Arsenal star

During Fulham’s game against Tottenham, the Cottagers seemed to have a perfectly legitimate goal ruled out, despite Mario Lemina having his hand down by his side when the ball hit him.

If anything, it showed up the incompetence of the officials working the VAR, rather than a fault with the technology itself.

In light of that particular decision, IFAB (International Football Association Board) have amended the handball ruling.

“Accidental handball that leads to a team-mate scoring a goal or having a goal-scoring opportunity will no longer be considered an offence,” a statement on their website read.

They have also made changes regarding concussion substitutions, and to the amount of subs a team can use during a game.

“The members received an update on the early stages of the trials with concussion substitutes, approved at The IFAB Annual Business Meeting in 2020 (see The IFAB circular no. 21),” the statement continued.

“The IFAB confirmed that the decision to launch the concussion substitute trials was based on the strong recommendation of the Concussion Expert Group which consists of leading medical and football experts who closely examined the applicability of best practice in other sports to football.

“Regarding the temporary amendment to Law 3, which allows the option of permitting teams to use up to five substitutes in games in top-level competitions (for club competitions ending by 31 December 2021 and national-team competitions ending by 31 July 2022), the members agreed that the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on football should remain under review.”

One can only hope that all three revised rules are for the betterment of the game.

Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina is on the verge of joining Monaco, just one month after being strongly linked with Manchester United.

According to Metro Sport, the Red Devils identified Lemina as a transfer target earlier this summer, but the club ultimately decided against meeting the Saints’ £18 million asking price.

The 25-year-old joined Southampton from Juventus in 2017 and has since racked up 46 Premier League appearances for the club, while also attracting attention from Arsenal.

Lemina is now closing in on a switch to Ligue 1, having agreed on personal terms with Monaco after successful negotiations this week – as per RMC Sport.

The French publication states that Southampton have yet to sanction a prized asset’s departure, but the French club are aiming to secure the Gabon star’s services on a season-long loan with the option to buy.

This latest news may come as a blow to United, who could have launched a fresh approach for Lemina when the English transfer window reopens in the new year.

The ex-Juventus ace now looks set to undertake a new challenge in France, with a Monaco side who are in dire need of extra reinforcements after a poor start to the 2019-20 campaign.

Leonardo Jardim’s men have lost both their opening fixtures 3-0, against Lyon and Metz respectively, with another relegation battle on the cards if they don’t improve quickly.

Lemina has proved himself as a consistent performer in the Premier League and he could help shore up Monaco’s midfield if a deal can be finalised over the next few days.

United, meanwhile, will have to turn their attention to alternative targets in January, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to guide the club back into the Champions League.
