Former Tottenham player and pundit Alan Hutton believes Eric Dier’s career at Spurs is now over. 

Eric Dier failed to impress Ange Postecoglou in the summer and has fallen down the pecking order since then.

Summer signing Micky van de Ven along with Cristian Romero have formed a formidable partnership at the back for the first 10 games with the duo among the best in the league.

Dier made his first appearance for the Spurs this season against Chelsea two weeks ago when he came on to replace Brennan Johnson following Romero’s red card.

And with Micky suffering a hamstring injury which will see him out of action for the foreseeable future, Dier got another chance against Wolves with the Spurs veteran starting his first game of the campaign. It ended in a 2-1 defeat with him being blamed for both the goals.

After his recent performances, Hutton has now claimed that his career with Spurs is practically over and the club will be looking to bring in a defensive reinforcement in January.

He told Football Insider:

“If I’m totally honest, I think Tottenham will want to bring someone else in.

“With van de Ven and Romero there, who have you got there that’s going to come in?

“There’s a lot of players that have been there for a number of years now and it’s not quite worked out. Dier’s been there for nine years now and you would think his Tottenham career is now over considering the last few weeks.

Levy reportedly wants to get rid of the 29-year-old in January in order to receive some transfer fee for him instead of risk losing him on a free in the summer.

And while it was initially suggested that Dier would prefer to stay until the end of the season and leave on a free to keep his options open, an interest from Bayern could sway his decision.

Any move away would of course depend on whether Spurs can sign a stand-in for the injured Dutch defender. Failure to sign an adequate centre-back in the upcoming transfer window would lead to Spurs keeping Dier for the rest of the season and losing him on a free.

Dier has been a loyal servant to Tottenham having been at the club since 9 years, making 362 appearances during that time, scoring 13 and assisting 12.

Bayern Munich need to add more depth to their squad and Dier would be a superb acquisition for the right price. His contract situation means that he will be available on a bargain and the German outfit must look to grab the opportunity and secure his signature.

As for the player, he will be hoping to compete for major trophies with a move to Bayern Munich. The German outfit have a proven track record of winning major trophies on a consistent basis. He would also get to reunite with his former teammate Harry Kane.

Who Tottenham sign as a short-term replacement for Van de Ven is unknown but a young defender would work best for the club in the long run.

As for Dier, the 29-year-old has been linked with a move to Roma but as mentioned above, that will come down to whether Tottenham can sign another centre-back or not during the winter window.

Former Spurs midfielder and pundit Jamie O’Hara launched a scathing critique of Tottenham defender Eric Dier for his performance against Wolves.

In a game where Tottenham initially took the lead through Brennan Johnson, they ended up conceding two stoppage time goals and losing.

Pablo Sarabia came off the bench to score one and assist another as Wolves completed the turn around.

O’Hara specifically pointed out Dier’s role in both goals conceded, describing the defender as being “in no man’s land” for each of them.

He also questioned why the defender remained at the club after the summer transfer window, suggesting that he should have been sold.

O’Hara told TalkSport:

“Eric Dier for me, two mistakes, in no man’s land for both goals.

“I don’t know where he is trying to go.

“He is back at the football club again. We should have got rid of him in the summer. No one wanted him, and he ended up back in the team.”

Aside from the loss last time out against Sheffield United, they’ve drawn with Newcastle and Aston Villa and beaten Man City, so they’ll be no pushovers.

Roma manager Jose Mourinho could reportedly raid the Premier League in this January’s transfer window as Arsenal’s Jakub Kiwior and Tottenham’s Eric Dier are linked with the Serie A giants.

Kiwior has not played regularly at Arsenal and Fabrizio Romano recently wrote in his Daily Briefing column that an unnamed Italian club came in for him during the summer.

Kiwior only joined Arsenal less than a year ago so might be more willing to wait for his chance to nail down a place in the Gunners’ starting XI, but it’s not looking easy for him with the presence of both William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, while Ben White can also fill in at centre-back.

The 29-year-old defender is not looking to push for a move away from the club in the winter despite not getting any first-team action so far. He is willing to run down his deal and walk away as a free agent.

Dier joined Spurs back in the summer of 2014 after coming through the ranks at Sporting CP. Since making the move to England, he has been a constant feature in the Spurs first team. The 29-year-old has been involved in over 350 matches for the club.

One complication to keep in mind is that it’s AFCON this year, so Tottenham might not be too keen to let Hojbjerg go when they can expect to be without Yves Bissouma. This makes the green light a bit more complicated, but Hojbjerg himself is open to a move, whether it’s January or next summer.

Also at Tottenham, Eric Dier is approaching the end of his contract and at the moment there are no talks over a new deal. A January move is a possibility for Dier, but it will depend on the proposals. Personally, I think the best way for both sides now is to try something new, Dier can certainly be a regular starter elsewhere, though I’m not currently aware of anything concrete with Roma, despite rumours.
