Despite enjoying a hugely successful season while out on loan with Nottingham Forest last season, Manchester United allowed midfielder James Garner to join Everton on a permanent deal during this summer’s transfer window.

The decision, which angered some fans, came as a surprise, especially considering how impressive the 21-year-old had been in the Championship last time out.

Having featured in 69 matches for Steve Copper’s Forest, across all competitions, Garner, who also has four under-21 England caps under his belt, directly contributed to a decent 18 goals.

However, despite returning to Old Trafford at the start of the summer, the Birkenhead-born defensive midfielder, who failed to make a competitive appearance for Erik ten Hag, was sold to Everton for around £15m.

In light of fans’ dismay at the decision, according to a recent report from The Athletic, ten Hag played an instrumental role in allowing the 21-year-old to move on.

It has been claimed that the 52-year-old Dutch tactician did not rate Garner highly enough to consider him a candidate for regular first-team football.

Although the deal is not yet sealed and the fact other clubs are in the hunt for the Birkenhead-born playmaker, the Toffees are believed to feel confident that they can lure the talented 21-year-old away from Old Trafford before the summer transfer window closes on Thursday night.

A lot of United fans will undoubtedly be frustrated by the club’s decision to sell Garner, but it makes sense.

Having enjoyed an impressive season on loan with Nottingham Forest last time out, Garner’s stock has risen immensely. After getting a taste of regular first-team football, the 21-year-old will be desperate to feature more often, and given the fact he is behind the likes of Scott McTominay, Fred and new signing Casemiro, United aren’t going to be able to offer the Englishman the playing time he deserves.

Therefore, considering the above, a move away is probably best for all parties, even if it means the Red Devils will miss out on developing a future star.

Garner played a pivotal role in helping Nottingham Forest get promoted to the Premier League, but the difference in difficulty between the two leagues is significant, and there is a chance he could struggle to adapt.

Manchester United defender Eric Bailly has said his goodbyes as he prepares to join Marseille on loan for the 2022/23 season.

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who adds in his exclusive CaughtOffside column that Aaron Wan-Bissaka and James Garner are likely to be the next two players out of the door.

Man Utd have made changes to their squad this summer, bringing in big names like Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, along with promising talents Lisandro Martinez and Tyrrell Malacia from the Eredivisie.

Still, it makes sense that next on Erik ten Hag’s agenda could be to trim down this squad by offloading backup players who are unlikely to feature much this season.

Bailly is heading for Marseille on loan, and Romano says the Ivory Coast international had also been targeted by Fulham and Roma, though he was keen for the move to Marseille in order to play Champions League football.

“Eric Bailly has said his goodbyes at Manchester United. He’ll be travelling to Marseille this morning to complete his loan move to the Ligue 1 giants by undergoing a medical and signing his contract. The deal will be completed in hours,” Romano said.

Done deal: Runar Alex Runarsson has completed his loan move to Antalyaspor. Further departures are also a priority for Arsenal, including terminating the contract of Hector Bellerin as he looks to return to Spain.

Atletico Madrid

Despite interest from Manchester United, Matheus Cunha is settled at Atletico Madrid, who won’t sell for the touted €50m asking price.

Barcelona

Barcelona manager Xavi is obsessed with signing Bernardo Silva from Manchester City, but the deal is complicated for a variety of reasons. No agreement yet.

Chelsea are not keen on paying Barca’s asking price for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, despite Thomas Tuchel being personally keen to work with his former player.

Marcos Alonso is one step away from completing his move to the Nou Camp, but that deal remains separate from Aubameyang for the moment.

Alex Collado has left Barcelona on loan, he has just signed the contract to join Elche until June 2023, no buy option included.

Celtic

There were clubs interested in Georgios Giakoumakis after his impressive form at Celtic. There have been approaches from Premier League clubs in the last few days, but he’s happy where he is and Celtic have absolutely no intention to sell him: he’s considered untouchable.

Chelsea are edging closer to signing Cesare Casadei. Personal terms have been agreed on a six-year deal, with potential moves to Nice and Sassuolo now off. Next official bid will be the right one to complete the deal for €15m plus add-ons. Chelsea are increasingly confident about this one.

West Ham are interested in Emerson Palmieri and he’d be open to joining, but Chelsea want more than the £10m the Hammers are preparing to offer. The Blues also turned down a loan offer from Nice earlier in the summer.

The 21-year-old has long been regarded as a big prospect at Man Utd, and also impressed last season during a loan spell with Nottingham Forest, helping them win promotion from the Championship to the Premier League.

It seems Forest are now keen on Garner again, while Tottenham also seem to be in the mix, but it’s Everton whose interest seems to be the most advanced as they make an approach for the £14-15m-rated player, according to Football Insider.

United fans might be a tad concerned about this, with Garner looking like he surely deserves a run in the first-team due to the lack of other options in that department.

Although the England Under-21 international may be inexperienced at the highest level, he surely can’t be much worse than the highly underwhelming pairing of Fred and Scott McTominay.

Tottenham could add to their impressive long list of summer signings in the coming days with reports stating that they have bid for Manchester United starlet James Garner after it emerged that the Old Trafford side could be willing to let him go if the price is right.

Garner was considered a youth prospect last year as he joined Nottingham Forest on loan for the second time under then-boss Chris Hughton. Making huge strides in his development under Steve Cooper, the Wirral-born star has been tipped to challenge United’s lack of midfield stars for a starting spot given their failure to buy stars such as Frenkie de Jong this summer.

But reports have creeped into the fold claiming that despite featuring for United just seven times in his career, they are willing to sell him for a fee of around £15m if the price is right.

And Alan Nixon, via his Patreon exclusive page, has claimed that Conte’s men have backed themselves to sign the star with an opening bid.

The report states that they plan to snatch him from under the eye of Nottingham Forest, who have made 15 signings so far this season and show no signs of slowing down.

Their opening bid was too low to be accepted by Erik ten Hag’s men, and he does wish to stay at the club he has been at since the age of eight – although if a midfielder such as de Jong is signed in the window, his stance may be altered.
