Legendary forward Samuel Eto’o is poised for a meeting with West Ham’s striker target Hugo Ekitike, and this encounter could prove to be a significant turning point for the club, per Sports Zone.

The need for a striker at West Ham has become increasingly evident, especially with Michail Antonio’s recent struggles and injury. David Moyes has experimented with Jarrod Bowen as a striker, but the results have been mixed, emphasising the missed opportunity to replace Gianluca Scamacca.

The looming absence of key players like Mohammed Kudus, Said Benrahma, Maxwel Cornet, and Nayef Aguerd due to AFCON adds urgency to West Ham’s search for attacking reinforcements. Ekitike has been linked with the Hammers by Foot Mercato in a recent report.

Ekitike has registered a nine-minute substitute appearance in Ligue 1 this season, and that’s all, highlighting the 21-year-old being massively out of favour at Paris Saint-Germain. Which will please the Hammers as the January transfer window edges closer to opening.

In his previous appearances the striker has demonstrated his ability to offer variation at the top of the pitch, using his athleticism to chase balls in behind defences, similar to Antonio. And, he uses his technical ability to drop into pockets in front of the opposition back line and get involved in the chance creation phase.

Jarrod Bowen and Trent Alexander-Arnold are two players capable of making England’s starting lineup in next summer’s European Championship.

That is the view of former Aston Villa and Liverpool attacker Stan Collymore, who believes both players have a chance of forcing Southgate to reconsider his preferred England squad.

Having both been called up to represent the Three Lions during the current international break, Southgate, who is preparing to take on Malta and North Macedonia in his last two competitive games of the year, will be demanding to see a good display as England aim to top Group C.

And in addition to predicting both Bowen and Alexander-Arnold will start on Friday night at Wembley against Malta, Collymore has suggested that playing well over the next six months could be crucial in the pair’s bid to become starters in Germany’s Euros 2024.

“I’m expecting Jarrod Bowen to start on the right wing with Trent Alexander-Arnold playing in a midfield role,” Collymore said in an exclusive interview.

“I think if Bowen and Alexander-Arnold can play well from now until April time next year, they’re the two who could sneak into Gareth Southgate’s starting team for the Euros.”

In his exclusive column for CaughtOffside, former Liverpool attacker Stan Collymore discusses some of football’s biggest talking points, including Everton’s harsh Financial Fair Play punishment, why it’s time Sir Alex Ferguson let Manchester United go, and a look ahead to England vs. Malta, plus much more.

————————————————————————–

Everton’s punishment harsh but necessary…

My take on it is painfully simple. The Premier League are looking to shore up their defence against Manchester City. They know that City are going to be lawyered up to the hilt following 115 charges brought against them, so the Premier League need to make sure they come armed with an example and unfortunately for Everton, they’re it.

The fact the Premier League have gone straight in with a 10-point deduction probably tells you that they feel they have a very strong case against Manchester City. What they’ve basically done today with Everton is set the punishment’s baseline at a 10-point deduction.

In my opinion, to be deducted 10 points for a £20 million deficit is fairly harsh to one of English football’s founding fathers and I’m sure other clubs will sympathise with them.

From my perspective, it’s really simple though. I have absolutely no problem with Everton being docked points. I think 10 is a bit harsh, as I said above, but I wouldn’t have a problem with any team being docked points if they’d broken financial rules – and that includes Aston Villa, by the way. But if the Premier League are going in hard, then they need to go in hard on any club that breaks the rules. Points deduction is one thing, but at what point do we start considering voiding silverware? There has to be an incentive there for clubs not to break the rules.

What is the point in a club’s ownership group investing all that money if the end goal, which is to win silverware, gets taken away? – It’d have all been for nothing.

Manchester United can’t move forward…

It’s time for Sir Alex Ferguson to let Manchester United move into a new era. We all know what he is and what he did for, not only the Red Devils but the whole of football. The man is a living legend, but there comes a point when such powerful figures need to take a step back if something is to move forward.

I am intrigued to see the changes Sir Jim Ratcliffe makes at Old Trafford but for him to reportedly be ‘guided’ by Sir Alex is a strange one. What does Sir Alex know about how to rebuild a modern-day football club? – With the greatest of respect, I would argue none.

To be able to have Sir Alex at the end of a phone when you need advice and support is one thing, but to have him lead a total rebuild is another. I think if Sir Alex knew the answers to United’s problems, he’d have shared them by now — he’s been out of his management role for 10 years and the club have done nothing but go backwards ever since.

So for me, I think it’s really just about Sir Alex enjoying his ambassador duties now he’s retired and letting the club go so it can move in a new direction altogether.

England’s two outsiders with a chance of starting in next summer’s Euros…

The priority is to top the group and qualify for next summer’s European Championship, and I am expecting the boys to get it done.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Marc Guehi started at centre-back and I am also expecting Jarrod Bowen to start on the right wing with Trent Alexander-Arnold playing in a midfield role.

I think if Bowen and Alexander-Arnold can play well from now until April time next year, they’re the two who could sneak into Gareth Southgate’s starting team for the Euros.

Watch this space.

Jarrod Bowen has named the only club he would leave West Ham for.

Speaking to fans at a recent community event, the Hammers winger, who recently signed a bumper new contract, was put on the spot and asked which club he’d want to sign for if he left West Ham.

Jokingly, the former Hull City man said: “Real Madrid, I like Real Madrid.”

Obviously, it goes without saying that a move to the Santiago Bernabeu for the 26-year-old is unlikely to ever happen so Hammers fans can breathe a sigh of relief.

Also asked who his favourite West Ham teammate is, Bowen named Brazil’s Lucas Paqueta as the man he likes to play alongside most.

West Ham remain top of the Group A table ahead of their Europa League tie against Olympiacos and, unlike in the first match between the teams, David Moyes is taking no chances with his team selection.

The Scot opted to rotate a few players last time out, and it came back to bite him as the Hammers lost in Greece.

Though Thursday night’s match at the London Stadium isn’t necessarily a ‘must win,’ getting all three points will keep them in the box seat with two games left to play in the group stage.

Both main strikers, Danny Ings and Michail Antonio, have been left on the bench, with Jarrod Bowen again leading the line for the east Londoners.

It’s becoming a feature for the Irons and could spell the end of Antonio’s and Ings’ Hammers careers.

With Said Benrahma, Lucas Paqueta and Mohammed Kudus all starting too, it appears that Moyes has gone with all-out attack.

James Ward-Prowse will supply the bullets whilst Edson Alvarez will station himself in front of a back four that sees Dinos Mavropanos making another appearance.

Nayef Aguerd, Emerson, Vladimir Coufal and keeper, Lukasz Fabianski make up a strong starting XI and one that is perfectly capable of getting the win required on the night if each player sticks to their task.

It’s not been the best of seasons for West Ham United so far, which is a disappointment when you consider how well they finished the 2023/23 campaign.

The Hammers have begun to plummet down the Premier League in much the same way as they had done in the previous season before pulling themselves together and going on a brilliant run in the latter part of the campaign.

There’s nothing to say that a similar fate will befall them in 2023/24, however, the way they’re playing at the moment, something needs to change. Quickly.

One of their biggest problems is a lack of goals from their strikers.

Per WhoScored, Michail Antonio only has two, the last of which came in August, whilst Danny Ings hasn’t scored or assisted in any of the matches he’s played.

Ahead of the Brentford game at the weekend, it appeared that David Moyes was acknowledging that he knew something had to be done.

“I’m loathe to say he’s (Jarrod Bowen) suddenly a No9 because we might need him to play No7 and do the job that he’s doing there,” he was reported as saying by the Evening Standard.

“But in time I see it changing for Jarrod, I really do. Hopefully, people would have seen my thoughts over a few months. I actually think Freiburg was probably the night, he was terrific that night in Freiburg and I think that made me feel it.

“We had a bit of a blip after the international break but the game the other night got us back on track. And the performance, more importantly, from the likes of Mo and Jarrod and Paqueta got us thinking there are other solutions to what we’ve got here.”

Whether Bowen will now become the de-facto centre-forward and both Ings and Antonio will only be used as back-up isn’t clear, though given Antonio’s age (33), it’s a safe bet that his Hammers career is coming to an end.

With the January window just a couple of months away, easing out both strikers will free up some of the wage bill, and that will allow Moyes and Tim Steidten to be able to freshen the squad up just when it needs it.

West Ham striker, Jarrod Bowen, made Premier League history with his goal at Brentford on Saturday.

Scoring from an acute angle, Bowen has become the first player in Premier League history to score in his team’s opening six games of a campaign.

Brentford had bossed the game until Mohammed Kudus had equalised with a stunning finish, and he was involved again causing panic in the hosts backline.

Bowen was the sharpest tool in the box and as the Bees defence stood still, the Hammers front man delivered the coup de grace.

Who saw this one coming?

West Ham have added a third to their tally against Arsenal during Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup Fourth Round tie at the London Stadium.

The Hammers, despite being tonight’s huge underdogs, are putting on a show at home against Mikel Arteta’s Gunners.

The Hammers took an early lead following an own-goal from Ben White with Mohammed Kudus doubling their advantage in the second half before Jarrod Bowen added the side’s third.

Former West Ham captain, Nigel Reo-Coker, hasn’t held back in his condemnation of current manager, David Moyes.

The Scot took his squad all the way to European success last season in the Conference League, but it’s one of his decisions in this season’s Europa League which has irked Reo-Coker.

After winning their opening two games in Group A, the Hammers were flying high again, extending their English record of unbeaten matches in Europe.

However, they were quickly undone last time out against Olympiacos in a game which, had they won, West Ham would’ve been odds on favourites to qualify from the group with games to spare.

The loss now puts the east Londoners under pressure to deliver at home to the Greek league outfit in just over a week’s time.

For some reason, Moyes decided to rest some of his major stars for the trip out to Greece, and that’s why Reo-Coker has got a bee in his bonnet.

“Losing to Olympiacos in the Europa League is a big blow,” he said on the BBC’s Football Daily.

“The problem is sometimes when you get this, as much as I want David Moyes to do well, sometimes managers can be their own worst enemy.

“For me I look at that game and it’s always a difficult place to go and get a result.

“You start your top guys, start them, try and get a one or two-goal lead and then you can take them off.

“I think not starting Paqueta, Antonio and Bowen in that game was a huge mistake and then you lose that game and it just puts the magnifying glass on you as a manager and the decision you made.

“You lose to Everton at home and then you’ve put yourself in a much more difficult position because if they lose again against Arsenal, then it’s going to be the same noise that we heard last season.”

Certainly, the Hammers have hit a real bump in the road at this point and in order for the second half of the season not to be a real uphill struggle, Moyes has got to turn the corner sooner rather than later.
