It’s not often that there’s a heartwarming story to be told in football circles, but for one former Premier League defender, all of his dreams appear to have come true at the ripe old age of 38.

At one stage in his long career, which began in 2003 at Luton Town and still isn’t over in 2023 at Cheltenham Town, Curtis Davies would almost certainly have had aspirations to play for the England national team.

Unfortunately for the former West Brom, Aston Villa, Leicester City, Birmingham City, Hull City and Derby County centre-back, a call-up for the senior side never materialised, and three U21 caps were all that he had to show for his troubles.

The very last thing he could’ve expected was a call up in a season that’s expected to be one of his last in the game, but that’s exactly what’s happened.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Davies announced that he will be playing for Sierra Leone, the country of his father’s birth, in their upcoming friendly matches.

He’s able to do so because of having never appeared for the Three Lions at senior level. A similar situation occurred with Ryan Giggs who represented England at schoolboy level before changing his allegiances to Wales.

Even if these next games are the sum total of his international career, it’s clear from Davies’ posts just how proud he is.

Derby County have signed former Tottenham and England midfielder Tom Huddlestone from fellow Championship side Hull City in a deal worth £2M, as per Sky Sports.

Huddlestone, who made 31 league appearances for the Tigers last season as the club were relegated, has re-joined the club he left 12 years ago, with the midfielder signing a two-year contract with the Rams, according to Sky Sports.

The deal came about after Derby activated the player’s release clause, with his now former club Hull making a late offer to try and persuade the star to stay at the KC stadium, however as reported by Sky Sports, the club were too late.

Huddlestone came through the academy at Derby, making 88 appearances during his time at Pride Park before the midfielder left for Premier League Spurs in 2005.

With this signing of Huddlestone, as well as the confirmed signings of Curtis Davies and Andre Wisdom, it seems like the Rams are looking to build from the back this year as they seek a return to the promised land of the Premier League.

Reports in the Daily Mirror claim that the NHS boob job model believed Davies was the father of her unborn child. The 24-year-old, who is eight-and-a-half months pregnant, spoke of her “heartbreak” at finding out she had been ‘manipulated’ for 18 months by believing she was dating Davies.

The source explains that he met the man who claimed to be Curtis last April, and the pair started sleeping together before she discovered more than a year later that he was an imposter.

Davies told reporters that he was disappointed at being dragged into Josie’s drama: “I’m not going to give a non story legs by commenting,” Curtis began “I will say I’m disappointed… My life goes on as normal.”

Cunningham wrote on Twitter: “Almost 4am and I’m wide awake Feel so dirty, ashamed and devastated. Before I explain why I have no doubt that people will think I’m lying, but I’ll upload some proof that I have been completely manipulated by a man for the past 18 months pretending to be a premiership footballer.

“I feel physically sick having to admit I was fooled by him and had sex with someone who simply looked like and claimed to be someone he wasn’t. I’m so lucky to have such an amazing and supportive family. I’m sorry I didn’t believe you all when you said a footballer wouldn’t go near me.”

Former Aston Villa defender Curtis Davies is to be offered the chance of a Premier League return with both Southampton and Reading interested in signing him.

England under-21 international Davies previously starred in the top-flight at both West Brom and Aston Villa, and is now a permanent fixture at the heart of the Birmingham City defence in the Championship.

The 27-year-old, who once described himself as playing like a pub team player, is available for around £1.5million, according to the Daily Mirror, because he has just 18 months left on his current contract.

Southampton’s interest in Davies stems back to the summer transfer window, when they were also keen on signing him, although the sacking of Nigel Adkins and subsequent appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as manager put Reading in the driving seat.

Reading manager Brian McDermott has targeted defensive reinforcements in the transfer window and is trying to seal a deal to sign 23-year-old Zambian centre-back Stoppila Sunzu, who has been on trial at the Madejski Stadium, as well as Davies.

McDermott said: “We want to bring in two or three players who have played in the Premier League before.”

Aston Villa are out of the FA Cup after being beaten by Manchester United in the last round and the Midlands club are actually in Spain at the moment supposedly on a break to return to the Premiership refreshed and revitalized as the race to finish in the top six intensifies.

But Villa defender Curtis Davies that the players are not partying or holiday making in sunny Spain. Instead they are working. Davies says:

This is no jolly-up. We have been working hard. In fact, we have done a bit more than we do back home. It’s certainly no holiday. We are taking this European push seriously. Our main aim is to secure a Uefa Cup place, but as long as we are in with a chance of fourth then we’ll keep going for it.

Let’s see whether Martin O’Neill’s plan to take his team away from England for a short period of time actually works or not.
