Watch former Hull City striker Abel Hernandez score a superb last-minute overhead kick winner for his club side Penarol in Uruguay.

Hernandez joined Penarol in his native Uruguay in January and this was by far and away his best goal yet.

Against Plaza Colonia in the 97th minute, Penarol looked to be heading for a 1-1 draw, but with the last kick of the game, former Hull City striker Hernadez popped up with a stunner to seal the win for his side.

The strike sent the Plaza crowd silent as the win for Penarol further tightened their grip at the top of the Uruguayan Primera Division.

Liverpool’s performance was summed up by an incident in the 76th minute of this game when James Milner smashed a square pass into the head of teammate Jordan Henderson.

Just moments earlier, Milner’s decision to shoot from 25 yards, when many better options were available, led to a mini civil war on the pitch.

Milner, who made more touches of the ball than any other play on the field, was not the reason why Liverpool lost 2-0 to Hull, but he provided two fine examples of what was wrong with Jurgen Klopp’s Reds.

Communication was awful, while composure was severely lacking. Liverpool were allowed to monopolise ball possession, but they weren’t cool enough to make it count.

Philippe Coutinho tried to play the role of chief creator, coming deep to start attacks, but the Brazilian suffered nosebleeds when he got to the business end of the pitch. His shooting was dreadful, firing all five of his attempts off target.

But, of course, this game was not all about Liverpool.

Hull were brilliant at the back. They maintained their defensive shape and demanded that Liverpool produced something special to break them down. They didn’t.

Tigers goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic had an impressive game, making four saves, most of which were pretty straightforward. The Hull stopper did make one spectacular intervention late in the game though, nailing a superb diving save to deny Henderson from long range.

Jakupovic’s opposite number, Simon Mignolet, was at fault for Hull’s first goal as a handling error allowed Alfred N’Diaye to bundle home from the third phase of a corner kick, which Liverpool’s defence had made a pig’s ear of dealing with.

Alfred N'Diaye

Hull’s second was the result of a long ball over the top, which Oumar Niasse raced onto before holding off two defenders and sliding cooly under Mignolet.

Tom Huddlestone, who started in midfield and ended up playing at the heart of a back five, won the Hull fans’ vote for man of the match. He was indeed excellent, getting his huge frame in the way when necessary, as well as linking up the play under pressure from Liverpool’s high press when the hosts had the ball.

This result means that Hull have now taken seven points from their last four Premier League games, despite facing Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool during that period.

Hull player ratings

Eldin Jakupovic 7, Omar Elabdellaoui 7, Andrea Ranocchia 9, Harry Maguire 7, Andrew Robertson 7, Alfred N’Diaye 8, Tom Huddlestone 9, Kamil Grosicki 7, Evandro 6, Sam Clucas 6, Abel Hernandez 6.

Aston Villa’s summer spending appears to be far from over as the club have reportedly submitted a £20m for Hull City striker Abel Hernandez.

It’s been a busy summer at Villa Park, with new owner Tony Xia and manager Roberto Di Matteo bringing in seven new faces after their relegation from the Premier League last season.

As they rebuild, identify and address weaknesses in the squad, it appears as though they have one last role to fill and and according to Sky Sports, Hernandez is the man to fill it.

The Uruguayan international was key for the Tigers last season, as he scored 22 goals in the Championship to fire them to promotion.

Although the club are naturally keen to keep him, they could now be tempted into using the funds from his sale to bolster the squad overall with moves for Will Keane and Jonathan Kodija being touted by Sky Sports.

Further, they could also look to strengthen their midfield with the signings of Jeff Hendrick and Ryan Mason, and if that is all true, then they’ll need finances from somewhere to fund that recruitment drive.

That might now come courtesy of Villa, who have already signed Pierluigi Gollini, James Chester, Tommy Elphick, Ritchie De Laet, Aaron Tshibola, Mile Jedinak and Ross McCormack this summer.

It hasn’t been the most positive of starts for the West Midlands giants though, as they have picked up just one win from their opening five Championship games.

One of the problems behind that is a lack of a prolific striker up front to take the chances being created by the team. Hernandez would certainly address that issue, but now it remains to be seen as to whether or not Villa’s sizeable offer is accepted by Hull and talks can then proceed.

Di Matteo and Xia have received plenty of praise for their moves in the transfer market this summer, and although it’s a huge fee, they’re evidently looking at players familiar with the Championship and with experience of being successful in the second tier to ensure that they seal immediate promotion back to the Premier League.

Aston Villa are expected to have a busy end to the summer transfer market, but owner Tony Xia has dismissed speculation of a £20m bid being lodged.

The Championship outfit suffered another setback on Saturday after falling to a 3-1 defeat at Bristol City, with Roberto Di Matteo’s men still struggling to find consistency.

With six new summer signings in the side at the weekend, it will likely take time for the new-look team to settle, and fortunately given the nature of the Championship, they will have a chance to get things right and climb the table.

According to The Sun, their push for promotion involved making a £20m bid for Hull City striker Abel Hernandez, with £14m up front and then a further £6m in add-ons.

Villa are certainly missing a prolific and pacy striker up top, and their inability to take their chances came back to the haunt them again in Bristol.

In turn, a move for Hernandez would make sense, albeit at a price way over the odds, but Xia has ended talk that they will move for the Uruguayan forward by insisting on Twitter that they are looking elsewhere and hope to wrap up a deal on Sunday.

Xia has become a popular figure with supporters given his honesty and openness on Twitter, and he has certainly done his part this summer after giving the green-light to seven new signings already.

It’s clear that more new faces are on the way, and now it will be down to Di Matteo and his staff to start getting results and quickly.

Villa sit in 16th place in the table having won just one of their opening five games of the campaign, although in their defence, they’ve had a tough start in terms of fixtures so far.

Arsenal are reportedly considering signing Hull City star Abel Hernandez as Arsene Wenger looks to add depth to his squad.

The Gunners have fallen three points behind Premier League leaders Leicester City and sit level with Manchester City in second place after a run of three games without a win.

While Wenger has struggled with injuries in recent months with the likes of Francis Coquelin, Santi Cazorla and Alexis Sanchez all picking up knocks, some more serious than others, the French tactician is starting to get his key players back fit.

However, in order to sustain their title push and get back on track he could be forced into action in the final few days of the January transfer window and that led to further speculation.

Nevertheless, according to Tuttomercatoweb, Hernandez has been identified as a target for the summer and not this week which will undoubtedly frustrate some Arsenal supporters hoping for immediate arrivals.

The Uruguayan international has scored 16 goals in 26 games so far this season for Hull, and he has previous experience of playing in Italy with Palermo where he was relatively successful.

If the reports are true, he will continue to help Steve Bruce’s push for promotion this season as the Tigers sit top of the table after 28 games but remain just a point above nearest rivals Middlesbrough.

In turn, Wenger will bide his time and potentially target the pacy striker in the summer with the likes of Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott having to take responsibility for scoring goals in the next few months.

The Royals were brought back to reality in the second half at the KC Stadium though as Abel Hernandez and a 90th-minute Jake Livermore strike sealed the Tigers a 2-1 win.

The result was Reading’s fourth straight league defeat and left them 13th in the table ahead of Brian McDermott’s anticipated return to the club for a second spell as manager.

According to BBC Sport, the 54-year-old, who led the Royals to promotion to the Premier League in 2012, will be announced as Steve Clarke’s successor this afternoon.

McDermott left Reading in March 2013 and had 13 months in charge of Leeds United before taking up a scouting role with Arsenal, where he spent five years a player, last year.

On this evidence, he has plenty of talent to work with as he aims to push the Berkshire Blues towards the playoff spots, which are currently seven points out of reach.

Napoli are understood to be considering a move to sign Hull City forward Abel Hernandez, who may move to the San Paolo as a replacement for Gonzalo Higuain.

The Argentine striker has made little secret of his desire to leave the Naples giants [according to the Daily Star], and has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League.

Both Manchester United and Arsenal have been named as potential suitors for the forward [Express], who managed 18 goals and seven assists in 37 league outings in the Italian top flight last term.

Higuain moved to Napoli back in 2013, but with the club having missed out on Champions League football, and with Rafael Benitez having departed for Real Madrid, his time with the Partenopei may be coming to an end.

According to Tuttomercato [via talkSPORT], Napoli are keen on making offensive reinforcements, and have earmarked Hull City forward Abel Hernandez as a potential addition to their forward line.

The Uruguay attacker was signed by the Tigers for £10 million a year ago [according to talkSPORT], but failed to thrive in the Premier League.

He managed just four goals in 25 league appearances, and was unable to prevent the Humberside outfit’s relegation to the Championship following a miserable campaign.

Even if Higuain does not leave the San Paolo, Hernandez could be drafted in as a replacement for Duvan Zapata, who has been loaned out to Udinese ahead of the coming campaign.

TalkSPORT report that Hull would be willing to make a loss on the player, with a fee of around £4.5 million being mooted. Despite his struggles, such a deal would represent a bargain for Napoli.

The Liverpool playmaker was among the nominees for the PFA Player of the Year award and was voted into the PFA Premier League Team of the Year. Chelsea’s Oscar is missing from the squad having not recovered from injury, and his absence could see this summer’s tournament as the moment Coutinho steps out of his shadow and makes his mark on the international stage.

(Image) Luis Antonio Valencia hints at Manchester United teammate’s departure

The pair were scuffling during the Tigers’ 0-0 draw with the Red Devils on the final day of the season that finally confirmed that Hull were relegated to the Championship. Clearly the 24-year-old was becoming frustrated with his side’s inability to score and get the win they needed to have a chance of staying in the top flight.

Even if Steve Bruce’s side had been able to get the win it wouldn’t have been enough to save them anyway. Newcastle United’s 2-0 victory over West Ham at St. James’ Park meant that there was never any chance that a miraculous survival could be conjured at the KC stadium on Sunday.

Hernandez will be fortunate to avoid a ban for this transgression.

It doesn’t seem that the referee saw this shocking act from Hernandez, and so he could be banned retrospectively, and may miss the start of next season.
