Leicester City remain the team to beat in the Championship this season, Enzo Maresca’s side winning 13 of their 16 English second-tier fixtures already.

Despite seemingly streaking ahead in the division, they’ve been pegged back a little with two defeats in their last two matches, meaning that they’re currently level on 39 points with second placed Ipswich Town, and just eight points ahead of Leeds United in third.

The top two face each other twice in the space of 25 days either side of the new year, and the results in those two games in particular could well go some way to defining how the second half of the league season might pan out.

One of the staff members that Maresca isn’t able to call upon is Jack Lyons, who Brendan Rodgers has confirmed is back with him at Celtic.

“I have been impressed with all the coaches,” Rodgers was quoted as saying by The Scotsman.

“John Kennedy is brilliant, and I saw that in my first spell. He is an outstanding coach and has an incredible thirst to continue learning and developing. He works as hard as I’ve ever seen anyone work in football. Besides all of that he is a good man. A very loyal man.

“I didn’t know Gavin and Harry. I met Harry prior to taking the job and had a chat with him at my house down south.

“And I have to say, for a player who was world class in his pomp, the commitment he has to being here at Celtic and helping all our wingers, he is very good. And I think (former) players like him give you that bit of gold dust. He shares that with the players and he is good for our team and gives a different viewpoint.

“Gavin is an excellent coach, very diligent and has lovely human qualities. He is always there for the players. And obviously Jack Lyons. I brought in Jack as a really young, talented coach who is analytically brilliant. He can analyse and present that to players too.

“So the team is very good and that’s why I didn’t just single out Harry! The dynamics of it all make it work.”

Leicester’s loss would very definitely appear to be Celtic’s gain, with Rodgers clearly glowing in his appraisal of his analyst.

That said, the Foxes don’t seem to be doing too badly at all without him, so there’s an argument that, in fact, the Midlands-based side have ended up with the better of that particular arrangement.

In any event, with both teams top of their respective leagues, it’s a win all round at present.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers won the hearts of many as he displayed a heartwarming act of kindness after today’s game, rescuing a young fan from stewards’ intervention.

Following Celtic’s 3-0 victory against Livingston, a young Celtic fan ran onto the pitch.

In a viral video, stewards can be seen tackling the young child to do the ground before proceeding to grab him roughly before proceeding to escort him away.

A furious Brendan Rodgers can be seen stepping in. He pushed the steward aside, before putting his arm around the young fan, and walked with him towards the stands.

Rodgers later addressed the incident during a post-match interview with Sky Sports. He criticized the stewards’ behavior toward the young supporter, emphasising the importance of common sense in such situations.

He said:

“It’s just common sense. The wee guy at the end, he wants to see his heroes. He shouldn’t be punished or prosecuted for that. Especially when the security guy’s a lot older than him.”

Watch the incident below:

In the game itself, Celtic secured a comfortable win despite playing most of the match with ten men.

Former Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart received the first red card of his career in the 28th minute. Despite this setback, Celtic’s Reo Hatate, Matt O’Reilly, and Daizen Maeda found the back of the net to secure the 3-0 victory.

Ajax

  • Official, completed. Ajax sign Benjamin Tahirovic on a permanent deal from AS Roma for a package worth close to €8.5m. Tahirovic will sign long term deal next week after medical tests planned in Amsterdam. Blow for Roma as Jose Mourinho is a big fan and said “he’s gonna become a top player” a few months ago.

Arsenal

  • There’s a concrete chance for Thomas Partey to leave Arsenal. Who could replace him? Why is Mikel Arteta taking this gamble? My thoughts and more exclusive details here.
  • Kai Havertz has been very clear with all parties involved in the deal: he wants to play for Arsenal after green light on contract this week. All personal terms have been agreed, and there’ll be a new bid from Arsenal soon. My understanding is that there is hope of getting this done after the international break.
  • Mikel Arteta approached by PSG? The truth – here.

Atletico Madrid

  • Antoine Griezmann on PSG links: “I want to stay at Atletico Madrid. I’m very happy there and my family too. I wanna win La Liga with Atleti and try to do something special in Champions League.”

Barcelona

  • Barcelona are closing in on a deal with Athletico Paranaense for Vitor Roque, a verbal agreement is now at the final stages. Deal agreed for €35m plus €10m add ons as per MD — taxes/commission to be fixed soon. The player’s choice has been key here as he only wanted to join Barca, despite interest from three other European clubs. He’ll sign a contract until 2028, with Deco taking care of the situation.
  • Ansu Fati on his future: “My intention is to stay at Barcelona, keep going there as I’m under contract and I’m very happy. I want to keep growing at Barca, I’ve no doubts.”

Bayern Munich

  • The agreement between Bayern and Kim Min-jae is now at final stages, details to be sorted on a five-year deal. He’s prepared to accept, but it’s not signed yet. Kim’s release clause will become valid on July 1, so unless other clubs submit new bigger salary proposals by next week, Kim will join Bayern.
  • Gambian talented striker Mamin Sanyang (born 2003) is set to leave Bayern to join Hannover on a permanent transfer. It’s the second deal between Bayern and Hannover this week after Bright Arrey-Mbi’s permanent transfer was also completed.

Benfica

Chelsea

  • N’Golo Kante is joining Al Ittihad, it’s set to be announced. The French midfielder leaves Chelsea to sign a four-year contract with the Saudi giants, earning a total salary of €100m over the four years. The negotiations started on 6 June and it’s now all but done, the end of an era.
  • There was growing confidence at Chelsea last night for Kalidou Koulibaly to accept Al Hilal’s contract proposal, which will be valid until 2026. It’s about key details now.
  • Both Koulibaly to Al Hilal and Ziyech to Al Nassr deals are advancing well and fast. They could be finalised this week, with Chelsea to receive fees for both players.
  • Chelsea are alongside Liverpool in keeping informed on Gabri Veiga’s situation – the Blues will continue to discuss the potential deal internally for now.
Gabri Veiga to Chelsea or Liverpool?
  • Conor Gallagher is currently not involved in Chelsea’s negotiations with Brighton for the Moises Caicedo deal. Gallagher is wanted by West Ham and Newcastle, while Brighton have other priorities for the midfield.
  • Armando Broja is also not part of Chelsea’s negotiations with Brighton – Mauricio Pochettino wants to get a look at the talented young striker in pre-season. He’ll be ready to try to impress the new manager after returning from injury.

Inter Milan

  • Could Denzel Dumfries leave Inter this summer? Is there concrete interest from Man Utd and Chelsea? All you need to know here.

Southampton

Following their relegation back to the Championship on the final day of last season, Leeds United are set for another busy and important summer transfer window.

Not only has manager Sam Allardyce already left his position, but several players are also expected to depart, including defender Robin Koch and Marc Roca.

However, although winger Jack Harrison is another name heavily linked with leaving Elland Road, according to a recent report from TalkSPORT, the former Manchester City wide-man may prefer to stay in Yorkshire if the Whites opt to hire Brendan Rodgers are their next manager.

Former Liverpool and Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers is reportedly closing in on a return to Celtic to replace the departing Ange Postecoglou.

The Northern Irish tactician is now widely expected to make a return to Celtic following a positive round of talks, according to the Guardian, who say this now looks to be all but sealed.

Rodgers has had a difficult few months, with things ending badly for him at Leicester, despite previously bringing the team so much success, but it now looks like he could be about to land another big job.

Celtic will no doubt be thrilled to attract such a proven candidate after the success Rodgers had in his first spell at the club between 2016 and 2019.

Brendan Rodgers looks set to return to Celtic

Postecoglou also did well during his time as Celtic manager, and that led to Tottenham swooping for him this summer as they sought a replacement for Antonio Conte.

It won’t be easy to build on what Postecoglou achieved at Celtic Park, but Rodgers is surely one of the strongest candidates the Scottish giants could have hoped for.

It’s been a tumultuous time for Ange Postecoglou after the Australian guided his Celtic side to a wonderful treble.

Just a few days after celebrating that wonderful achievement, it was announced he was heading south to become the new first-team manager at troubled Tottenham Hotspur.

Quite what he’ll make of the mess at White Hart Lane is anyone’s guess, but it appears that he’s up for what will be a significant challenge and, if he’s able to bring the good times back to the north Londoners, he’ll be lauded as their saviour.

In recent times both Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte have tried and failed to get the best out of the Spurs squad, so Postecoglou certainly has his work cut out.

In any event, his departure has opened up a position north of the border, and as Foot Mercato journalist, Santi Aouna tweeted, Celtic have West Ham’s David Moyes as their priority replacement.

Moyes still has the small matter of the Europa Conference final to negotiate on Wednesday evening, and whether or not the Hammers are successful against Fiorentina, it isn’t clear if the Scot wants to leave the east Londoners in any event.

If they fail to beat the Italians, given their poor domestic campaign, the Hammers board may decide it’s time for a change.

Aouna believes that should Moyes go, then former Leicester City manager, Brendan Rodgers, is in pole position to set up camp at the London Stadium.

Former Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers is reportedly emerging as the favourite to become the new West Ham manager in case David Moyes leaves after tomorrow night’s Europa Conference League final against Fiorentina.

It’s not been the best season for the Hammers domestically, though they can undoubtedly end on a real high if they get a win and lift a trophy tomorrow evening.

Still, Moyes’ long-term future has looked uncertain for a while now and it seems Rodgers is the man most likely to take over from the Scottish tactician if he does step down.

Rodgers has long been rated very highly and was also linked with the Tottenham job recently before it went to Ange Postecoglou instead.

West Ham will surely feel it’s worth gambling on Rodgers, even if things didn’t quite go to plan for him towards the end of his time at the King Power Stadium.

The least surprising news of the day was that Leeds United have parted company with Sam Allardyce via mutual consent.

‘Big Sam’ was never likely to bag a permanent position at Elland Road after his four games in charge of the club at the back end of the 2022/23 Premier League campaign ended with one draw and three defeats.

That he was parachuted in at such a late stage should be a cause of embarrassment for Andrea Radrizzani and  his fellow directors at Elland Road, who really should’ve acted much sooner when the writing was on the wall.

As it is, Radrizzani could well be looking at a buyout of the club by 49ers Enterprises, and, according to The Athletic (subscription required), they will then begin the search for a new manager, with one in particular catching their eye.

Though he’s not worked for a few months now, former Leicester City chief, Brendan Rodgers, would appear to be top of their list and the man that they believe can bring them straight back up to the promised land.

The report suggests that other names are being considered but the Rodgers appointment definitely appeals.

Given his extensive big club experience and his availability, it’s a job that could work for both parties as it would allow Rodgers to build a new project with a definite aim of promotion, and give the owners confidence that they have a man in charge that has been there and done it and, as such, is unlikely to be cowed by the obvious pressures of the role.
