According to The Athletic’s Phil Hay, Middlesbrough are likely to trigger the £1.5million option-to-buy clause in their loan deal for Sam Greenwood. 

Greenwood was one of the several players loaned out by Leeds United manager Daniel Farke after he decided they are not part of his plans.

Fellow Championship side, Middlesbrough, ended up signing him on a loan where he has been on a decent form.

The 21-year-old has made 12 league appearances for them, and has scored four goals in his last 6 games.

The club have been impressed with his performances lately and as per the report, it is ‘highly likely‘ that Middlesbrough will trigger the option to purchase clause in his contract.

Greenwood is an extremely versatile player who can play as a number 10, as well as a central midfielder and also as a wide attacker.

He scored the winner against Leicester City last week with a stunning free-kick from almost 25-yards out.

Leeds could be selling a potential star in the making and would be doing so without making any profit having signed him from Arsenal for £1.5m.

Leicester City suffered a 1-0 defeat against Middlesbrough earlier today.

The game was a heading for a 0-0 draw up until the 83rd minute when Hamza Choudhury conceded a free-kick.

Sam Greenwood stepped up from 25 yards out and banged in a stunner to win it for Middlesbrough.

It’s been a bit of a topsy-turvy season for Daniel Farke and Leeds United so far this season, a draw thanks to an injury-time equaliser and a last-minute defeat the sum total of their Championship season to this point.

One player that hasn’t featured for the all-whites after being injured during their first pre-season game against Man United, has been spotted training at the club’s Thorp Arch complex.

Taking to his Instagram stories, attacking midfielder-cum-forward. Sam Greenwood, posted a picture with a fist emoji.

The suggestion that he’s potentially fit again can’t come too soon for Farke who has problems with injuries and Willy Gnonto’s self-imposed strike.

Leeds United manager Sam Allardyce has hinted that young midfielder Sam Greenwood could be given a chance against Newcastle United at the weekend.

The 21-year-old has struggled for game time under the previous manager Javi Gracia. Greenwood made just one appearance as a substitute under the former Leeds manager and he will be hoping to get his career back on track under Allardyce.

The 21-year-old did reasonably well under Jesse Marsch and he could be an important player for Leeds United in the remaining games of the season. He will add work ethic, creativity and presence in the middle of the park.

“Everyone has trained well enough to be involved. We will make a couple of changes against Newcastle but you’ll have to wait and see when we name the team,” Allardyce said when asked if Greenwood could start this weekend.

Leeds are currently fighting for their survival in the Premier League and they will be desperate to finish the season strongly and secure their status as a top-flight club.

Greenwood will be hungry to prove himself at this level and his determination to succeed will be a bonus for Leeds.

A positive result against Newcastle United could be a huge boost for Leeds and it remains to be seen whether Allardyce can mastermind a morale-boosting victory against the Magpies.

Conor McGilligan has suggested that Leeds United youngster Sam Greenwood might be going out on loan to the Championship this winter. 

The 20-year-old is a promising young talent at Elland Road, but it looks like potentially a long way into a regular place in Jesse Marsch’s first XI.

YouTuber McGilligan has now weighed in on Greenwood’s future, suggesting everything points towards a January loan.

He explained: “I reckon if you offered Sam Greenwood a Championship move and said, ‘look, you’re going to be playing 90 minutes week-in, week-out’ – as Leeds did with someone like Cody Drameh, as Leeds have done with Charlie Cresswell – I think that is something that Sam Greenwood would prefer.

Leeds prodigy Crysencio Summerville had signed a new long-term contract with the club despite interest in a loan move from Scottish giants Rangers in what is a huge boost to the Elland Road outfit.

Summerville signed for the Whites back in 2020 from Feyenoord in a deal worth around £2m after impressing on loan at ADO Den Haag at the age of just 18.

The Rotterdam-born starlet signed a three-year deal upon his arrival in Yorkshire, although he made no appearances in his first campaign at the club which was hampered by potential ligament damage in March 2021.

However, his development rose exponentially and he made eight appearances last season as Jesse Marsch’s men as they escaped relegation to the Championship on the final day.

Leeds escaped relegation on the final day as they beat Brentford 2-1.

And the news of a new contract will dishearten Rangers fans, who were keen to snap Summerville up prior to his move to Leeds on a permanent transfer.

They had been linked as recently as January, although they opted for Manchester United youngster Amad Diallo instead.

Elsewhere, Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood have also signed new long-term contracts at Elland Road as Leeds transfer chiefs look forward to securing the future of the club.

With the Whites now moving in a new direction under Marsch, a former manager of German side RB Leipzig, a recent training clip has revealed that the American coach has brought both Sam Greenwood and Lewis Bate back into first-team contention.

Both players, who have just six senior appearances between them, were with the club’s under-23s side, but now appear to have been promoted back to the first-team.

Leeds United reportedly rejected SIX offers for attacker Sam Greenwood in the summer transfer window.

Greenwood, an England U-19 international, left Arsenal’s academy to join Leeds last year and has already made his senior debut for Marcelo Bielsa’s men as a second-half substitute in the FA Cup.

According to Football Insider, Leeds were approached by as many as six Championship sides over the possibility of signing the teenager in the summer transfer window. All six were rebuffed.

As is mentioned in the report, Leeds trimmed down their attacking options over the summer and there appears to be a legitimate desire to give Greenwood minutes, hence why he was kept around.

There will be those that’ll argue regular first-team football would have been more beneficial for Greenwood, but there appears to be a legitimate chance of Bielsa giving him a chance to impress in the weeks and months to come.

If Greenwood is not given first-team opportunities in the first half of the season, he and his advisors can reassess the situation when the market re-opens in the winter.
