Crystal Palace are reportedly set to try a summer transfer window move for Middlesbrough striker Chuba Akpom.

The former Arsenal forward has scored a total of 28 goals in 36 Championship games so far this season, and it’s easy to imagine him being a hit in the Premier League.

If Boro miss out on promotion, Palace could definitely do well to snap him up, though it remains to be seen how hard his current club will push to keep hold of him.

Still, Team Talk claim that Palace are reasonably confident that they’d be able to strike a deal for Akpom.

The 27-year-old has mainly played at Championship level whilst also having spells in Greece and Belgium down the years.

West Ham have managed just 34 Premier League goals in total this season, per the Official Premier League website, so it’s understandable why they might be interested in a player that’s scored 29 on his own from 38 appearances according to WhoScored.

What’s more, the player in question was born just a goal kick away from the Hammers’ old Boleyn Ground (or Upton Park if you prefer), in Canning Town.

According to the print edition of The Mirror (April 28, page 67), the east Londoners have put themselves in the race for the 27-year-old’s signature, joining Everton and Leicester in hoping that they can persuade the Middlesbrough star to sign on the dotted line.

Much is likely to depend on whether his current club can make it into the English top-flight by virtue of the lottery of the Championship play-offs.

Chuba Akpom

Under former Man United, Tottenham and West Ham star, Michael Carrick, Boro have played some sparkling stuff, and if he’s able to guide them into the Premier League, who’s to say that Akpom won’t want to stay put.

Equally, could Carrick be tempted into managing the Hammers if they were to dispense with the services of David Moyes in the summer, and does that change the priorities for the Championship’s Player of the Year, (per EFL)?

Those questions will surely be answered once Middlesbrough’s fate is known because it’s clear he’s far too good for the Championship.

With only 21 goals this season, Crystal Palace are the joint third worst for finding the net in the Premier League.

The striking problems that the Eagles have really need to be addressed as soon as possible, though it appears that Patrick Vieira does have a potential solution in mind.

According to talkSPORT, it seems that the highly sought after Middlesbrough striker, Chuba Akpom, is interesting the Frenchman.

With 21 goals in 28 games so far, per Transfer Tavern, the same tally as Palace have across their whole team, he has four more than any other Championship player this season so it’s obvious why Vieira is keen.

At just 27 years of age too Akpom has plenty left in the tank, and regardless of whether the Teeside outfit gain promotion to the top-flight under Michael Carrick, Palace will surely fancy their chances of acquiring the player.

Chuba Akpom

That’s because Vieira’s side play a vibrant attacking style and one which ensures plenty of chances for the front men.

The service will be manna from heaven for a marksman such as Akpom, who thrives on the early ball into the box.

Of course, it isn’t just the south Londoners who are interested in making a purchase, as talkSPORT also note that Leeds United and Everton are following the player closely.

Where Vieira may hold all the aces is that Akpom is a Londoner, and therefore could fancy a switch back to nearer his roots.

The only slight proviso to any deal at this point is that the player isn’t proven in the English top-flight.

It’s no real secret that Leeds have struggled in front of goal in the 2022/23 Premier League campaign.

Though they’ve found the target more often than those teams around them in the relegation battle, with the calibre of striker they have at their disposal the Yorkshire-based outfit need to be converting on a much more regular basis.

It’s perhaps with that in mind, that talkSPORT are reporting that they are keeping a very close eye on Middlesbrough’s Chuba Akpom.

According to the Transfer Tavern, the marksman has scored on 21 occasions in 28 Championship games this season, working out at an average of a goal every 105 minutes.

That compares incredibly favourably to the entire Leeds front line, with Javi Gracia’s squad only having managed to score seven in the 11 English top-flight games since the end of the World Cup.

Much will depend on the fortunes of both sides of course.

At present, it appears that Leeds are one of those teams that are almost certain to go down, unless Gracia can halt the slide.

Middlesbrough under Michael Carrick have been a team reborn, and look more than likely to be on for a return to the Premier League.

Were those scenarios to occur, it’s hard to imagine that Akpom would stay with a Championship outfit, though it is worth baring in mind that the player has no top flight experience and, as such, there can’t be a guarantee of goals – and certainly not at the rate he’s scoring them in 2022/23.

With Middlesbrough officially announcing the signing of Chuba Akpom from PAOK on a three-year deal, Arsenal will have received a nice windfall owing to a sell-on clause.

According to Greek outlet Gazzetta, Middlesbrough have parted with a fee of €3m to sign the 24-year-old, with PAOK retaining a sell-on clause as part of the transfer.

Akpom left Arsenal for the Greek outfit in the summer of 2018, the forward saw little first-team action but was loaned out six times during his spell on the Gunners’ books.

The Associated Press reported last year that the north London outfit negotiated a clause that would see them net 40% of any future Akpom sale to a British club.

This clause proved to be controversial and dropped Arsenal into trouble with FIFA, who fined the Premier League side €42,300 for including a term that was seen to have violated transfer rules.

For whatever reason, FIFA were angry enough to impose a fine but not so much so that they voided the clause, which seems quite strange.

So Arsenal have cashed in €1.2m (40% of €3m) from Akpom’s return to England, which actually covers 60% of the amount they’re expected to pay for imminent arrival Alex Runar Runarsson.

Akpom ended his PAOK career on a positive note as he bagged the assist for the Greek outfit’s opener against Benfica last night.

Akpom had six loan spells away from the Gunners before leaving, the former England youth international has since scored 19 times and chipped in with nine assists in 79 appearances for PAOK.

Should Arsenal have been allowed to benefit from the sale like this?

According to Greek outlet Gazzetta, PAOK are close to granting former Arsenal ace Chuba Akpom a return to England with a sale to Middlesbrough very close.

Gazzetta report that an agreement was actually already struck before Akpom played in what appears to have been his last outing for PAOK last night in the 2-1 upset win against Benfica.

It’s added that Championship side Middlesbrough will pay a €3m fee to land the 24-year-old, with PAOK to retain a sell-on clause as part of the deal.

Gazzetta reiterate that the forward’s desire is to return to England, with the Greek outfit clearly not willing to stand in ace’s way.

chuba akpom
Chuba Akpom during his time at Arsenal.

This relates to Arsenal as the Gunners hold a controversial sell-on clause for Akpom, with the side able to bank 40% from a sale to British sides, compared to 30% if Akpom moved to a foreign club.

The Associated Press added last year that the north London outfit were actually fined €42,300 by FIFA for the inclusion of such a clause in the youngster’s transfer.

Of course with PAOK having to pay back a larger percentage if they sold to a British club – like the potential deal with Middlesbrough – Arsenal’s clause was deemed to have been in violation of rules regarding the influence of other clubs’ transfers, they also didn’t declare this detail in the Transfer Matching System, a secretive move which certainly didn’t bode well.

Despite that, when FIFA’s decision was revealed last summer there was no mention that the clause would be voided, so Arsenal could still be in line for a healthy windfall.

Although Chuba Akpom has become a regular starter for PAOK since leaving Arsenal, he was mainly in the news after FIFA charged Arsenal for some of their actions surrounding a potential sell on fee.

Greek football only tends to make the news if something amazing or dreadful happens, and this miss definitely falls under the second category:

Chuba Akpom ridiculous miss from soccer

It’s tough to watch the first time because you actually cringe at the thought of him somehow missing the target from that position, but the reality is actually worse as he fails to make any connection with the ball at all.

PAOK went on to win the game so it all ended okay, but this is probably explains why he hasn’t been that prolific since leaving Arsenal.

When finances are tight you have to think that any extra income will be welcomed and appreciated, although it’s not clear if this will make much difference to Arsenal’s summer activity.

The transfer of Chuba Akpom from Arsenal to PAOK made the headlines for the wrong reasons after Sky Sports reported that Arsenal had been sanctioned by FIFA over a sell on clause.

The problems arose because Arsenal had insisted that they would receive a higher amount if he was sold on to an English team, and FIFA dictate that you cannot be seen to influence another club’s transfer activity.

Despite that, they now look set to benefit from that clause after a report from Gazzetta in Greece reported that Akpom was closing in on a €2m move to Turkish giants Besiktas.

That report from Sky suggested that Arsenal should get 30% of the next fee if he didn’t go to an English side, so that should result in a fee of around €600k coming Arsenal’s way.

Interestingly that fine from FIFA only came to £34k, so they’ve actually managed to make a profit on that sell on clause business in the end!

It’s becoming clear that every transfer is much more complicated than we realise, but it sounds like Arsenal have been a bit naughty with some of their recent dealings.

As reported by AP News, they’ve been given a fine and warned about their future conduct after FIFA investigated a couple of recent transfers.

It sounds like this revolves around sell on clauses for Chuba Akpom and Joel Campbell, who moved to PAOK and Frosinone respectively.

READ MORE: Arsenal target offered huge incentive to sign on the dotted line this summer

The problem came after two different sell-on clauses were included in these deals, as Arsenal would receive a larger cut of the fee if they were sold on to British clubs.

FIFA opened an investigation into this back in January, and they’ve decided that Arsenal had violated rules related to influencing transfer activity of another team.

The fine won’t make a big difference – it’s reported that the total is $42,300- but it will be interesting to see if this opens up a can of worms.

It would be naive to think that Arsenal are the only team who’s done this, and it does make you wonder if other clubs could face sanctions too.

Arsenal academy graduate Chuba Akpom has joined Greek Superleague side PAOK.

He has penned a three-year deal, according to Sky Sports.

Akpom’s move to PAOK seals the end of a 16-year spell with Arsenal. The striker joined the Gunners academy ranks at the age of six.

During his time at the Gunners Akpom made 12 appearances for the first team, although he spent time on loan at Brentford, Coventry City, Nottingham Forest, Hull City, Brighton and most recently Belgian First Division side Sint Truiden.

22-year-old Akpom climbed through the ranks of the England youth teams having represented England at Under-16, Under-17, Under-19, Under-20 and Under-21 levels.

Akpom’s decision to choose the No. 47 squad number and use the #AK47 hashtag when announcing his move to PAOK on Instagram comes less than six months after the Greek club found themselves at the centre of a gun controversy.

In March, PAOK owner Ivan Savvidis interrupted a game against AEK Athens by marching onto the pitch while carrying a pistol, as reported by the Daily Mail.

His scary protest came after a goal was disallowed.

Akpom could prove to be a coup for PAOK, who finished 2nd in the Greek Superleague last season. Perhaps the acquisition of Akpom could help fire the team towards winning the title for the first time since 1985.
