Just when you thought that things couldn’t get any worse for Schalke, the Bundesliga outfit have made another incredibly poor decision.

Although it had been reported by ESPN’s Bundesliga commentator, Derek Rae, that the players had revolted and wanted manager, Christian Gross, removed for a variety of reasons, he was their fourth manager of a disaster of a season and it wouldn’t have made sense to send him packing.

However, after Schalke’s 5-1 defeat at Stuttgart, which leaves them rooted to the bottom of the Bundesliga with no wins in the last eight league matches, the powers that be have acted swiftly.

According to another tweet from Rae, not only has Gross been relieved of his duties, but head of sport, Jochen Schneider, team coordinator, Sascha Riether, and athletic trainer, Werner Leuthard, have gone too.

With only one win all season and just nine points on the board, Schalke are already nine points from safety.

There’s no doubt they will be relegated to Bundesliga 2, so whomever comes in now has to be the right appointment for the short and medium term.

It’s simply unsustainable to have a ‘hire ’em and fire ’em’ mentality in this situation.

According to Kris Temple of the BBC (also the voice of England and Wembley), Thierry Henry is on the final shortlist of candidates as Bournemouth close in on a new manager.

Temple reports that former Huddersfield and Schalke boss David Wagner is in the running, it’s added that Bournemouth are keen to open talks with Henry, but require permission from his current employers.

Henry has been in charge of MLS side Montreal Impact since November 2019, in a reign that has produced iconic moments like this.

Montreal finished ninth out of 14 teams in the Eastern Conference in the 2020/21 campaign (they operate a different schedule, the season is finished) and ninth out of 12 in 19/20.

Temple reiterates that reports Henry has been offered the job are ‘premature’ at this moment in time.

Bournemouth sacked Jason Tindall – Eddie Howe’s old assistant turned successor – at the start of the month.

Former England star Jonathan Woodgate is in caretaker charge of the side, winning twice and drawing one of his games in charge to date.

The Cherries sit sixth in the Championship, with the South Coast outfit looking to return to the Premier League at the first chance.

Henry is one of the greatest players to ever play the beautiful game, with the former forward starring for Arsenal, Barcelona, Monaco and Juventus in Europe before ending his career at New York Red Bulls.

With all respect to Montreal and the MLS, a job in the Championship would mark the first high-profile one for Henry since he was sacked by boyhood club Monaco after just three months.

The 49-year-old is currently out work and is said to be keen on taking the Bournemouth manager’s job, though he’s not alone in that, according to The Athletic.

Wagner is said to be one of a number of names keen on taking over at Bournemouth, but some big names have also already been ruled out.

The report explains that Frank Lampard is not yet ready to return to management after his recent sacking at Chelsea, while Fulham’s Scott Parker is also thought to be an unrealistic target.

It remains to be seen who the Cherries will ultimately settle for, but they could do a lot worse than Wagner, who did well with Huddersfield in the Championship.

The German tactician endured a difficult spell at Schalke, but could surely bounce back with a step down to a lower level.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that former Schalke manager David Wagner gave a glowing reference for new signing Ozan Kabak.

The Turkey international completed a loan move from Schalke to Liverpool yesterday, as made official on the Reds’ website.

This looks a necessary move for Liverpool to strengthen their defence after a difficult season of injuries to key players like Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip.

Klopp has been forced to play midfielders Jordan Henderson and Fabinho as his two centre-backs at times this season, and it’s clear that the highly-rated young Kabak could be a better option.

The 20-year-old impressed in the Bundesliga and Klopp is clearly excited about working with him, citing his big personality as one major factor in signing him.

Speaking to Liverpool’s official site about Kabak, the German tactician revealed he asked Wagner about the player and got a glowing reference, which will no doubt have helped convince him to bring him to Anfield.

Ozan Kabak in action for Schalke

“Yes, Dave was already very, very positive about him,” Klopp said. “He came very young to Germany and everybody was clear he was a massive talent.

“He is only 20 now. He plays in his second club [in Germany]; he is at Schalke and unfortunately they are in a bad position in the moment. For him, I think it’s a really good moment to make the move because, like each player in the world, you need a stable team around you and that’s what we can deliver.

“We deliver a stable team and you can play your position, you don’t have to be 20 with pretty much everything on the pitch and not allowed to make mistakes anymore.

“He’s really a big, big talent and we are really looking forward to working with him.

“Dave always said he will be a future captain of a team. He is a proper personality.

“When you go abroad in that young age, to another country and play for other clubs, he could have played in Turkey in each club he wants. Goes then to Stuttgart, goes then to Schalke. He could have gone anywhere but he wanted to make football steps and we are a proper football step for him.

“He wants to learn but he can deliver already.”

There has been a fair share of criticism and scrutiny thrown at VAR this season, and if you’re Schalke boss David Wagner, you’ll now understand why.

During his side’s 3-2 win over Hertha Berlin in the DFB Pokal, the 48-year-old was incredibly sent off from the touchline after an incident involving Jordan Torunarigha.

SEE MORE: Video: Gio Reyna scores stunning first goal for Dortmund

As seen in the video below, it appears as though Wagner is merely trying to help the defender back to his feet before Torunarigha loses his temper and lashes out over perhaps not being able to keep the ball in play and the scoreline.

For whatever reason, Wagner’s offer of help was misinterpreted by both the Hertha star and VAR, as after his rival was handed a second yellow card for his angry reaction during the ‘altercation’, Wagner was then shown a straight red card himself.

This is ultimately where things become farcical with VAR, but fortunately as far as Schalke and Wagner are concerned, they got the job done in terms of advancing in the cup after securing a win.

Still, this has unsurprisingly led to a reaction as it seems ridiculous the former Huddersfield boss received any punishment at all…

Liverpool were very wasteful in their 1-0 win against Huddersfield this evening, Huddersfield caused the Reds more problems than they would have expected.

Liverpool failed to create the amount of clear-cut chances that fans would have expected throughout the game and the Reds were often wasteful with the ball in the final third.

Liverpool’s line-up included several changes with the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri, Daniel Sturridge, Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana brought into the starting line-up.

See More: Video: Mohamed Salah scores fine right-footed finish to give Liverpool first half lead vs Huddersfield

Liverpool scored the only goal of the game through Mohamed Salah in the 24th minute of the tie, Salah hadn’t scored for the Reds for four games heading into today’s match-up against the Terriers.

Salah produced a fine right-foot finish after a perfectly weighted pass from summer signing Xherdan Shaqiri. The Egyptian international was a deserved Man of The Match this evening.

Salah vs Huddersfield
Salah was the best player on the pitch for Liverpool tonight and his well-taken goal proved to be decisive for the Reds.

With Liverpool fans largely disappointed that their side didn’t blow away Huddersfield in more exciting fashion some Liverpool fans took to Twitter to voice their concerns on Lallana’s performance.

Check out the tweets below:

Lallana was eventually substituted in the 69th minute of the match, with summer signing Fabinho coming on to make his Premier League debut for the Reds.

Criticism towards Lallana seems unfair considering that the England international was making his first start for Liverpool since January 1st.

Lallana was bound to look rusty after the amount of injuries the midfielder has had to deal with in the last year, Sturridge looked rusty when he was first reintroduced into the team and things are now flying for the striker.

Despite the areas of improvement Liverpool have managed to just do enough to continue their unbeaten record in the Premier League this season.

The fans should have faith in Klopp’s decision to start Lallana as they will need quality in depth if they look to pry the Premier League title away from the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea this season.

The stats show no team in the Premier League ran more than Arsenal this weekend despite their disappointing opening day defeat to Manchester City.

The Gunners were beaten 2-0 by City at the Emirates Stadium as new manager Unai Emery took charge of his first competitive game for the club since replacing Arsene Wenger in the summer.

MORE: Arsenal Fan TV forced to undergo rebrand after talks with club, relaunch as AFTV

While this was far from an ideal start for the new man in charge, it’s worth noting the scale of the job on his hands, particularly against such quality opposition.

And yet, it seems Emery’s new tactics may be working as his players covered more distance than any other team over the weekend.

Sky Sports show this in the graphic below, with Tottenham in second place, with Newcastle and Manchester City very close behind, followed by Huddersfield Town and Chelsea.

Of course, Gooners will want more than their team to just be running and working hard, but that’s one area they were arguably lacking in under Wenger.

Known for playing pretty football but for buckling when it mattered most, it would be a welcome change if Emery could make Arsenal better at battling against top sides like City.

Despite the poor result, this stat should leave fans fairly optimistic about what’s to come for the club under their new boss.

Liverpool returned to winning ways on Saturday, as the Reds hammered minnows Huddersfield 3-0 to record their first league win since September 23rd. Here are five things we learnt from Jurgen Klopp’s side’s victory on Saturday afternoon.

Klopp

1 – Firmino’s on fire

Following his well taken finish on the weekend, Liverpool talisman Roberto Firmino has now taken his tally this season to seven goals and four assists in 15 games, a record that shouldn’t be sniffed at. Depsite his side’s recent struggles in the league, the Brazilian international has still maintained a decent run of form, and has made sure he’s always one of the first names on the team sheet at Anfield.

2 – Salah takes a hit

Liverpool’s summer signing Mohamed Salah had a pretty shocking day on Saturday, with the Egyptian proving to be fairly ineffective as well as missing the chance to give his side a first half lead from the spot. Although his failed spot-kick didn’t end up effecting the final result, it still would’ve surely effected the player’s confidence, and it certainly looked that way. The former Roma ace was dragged off by boss Klopp with 10 minutes to go, just to show how much of an off day the forward was having.

3 – Milner’s resurrection

Reds stalwart Milner was everpresent in Jurgen Klopp’s starting line-up last season, with the England international managing to make 36 league appearances for his side. This season is a bit of a different story, as the former Man City and Newcastle man has often found himself starting from the sidelines, with Moreno or Gomez being preferred to the 31-year-old. However on Saturday, the midfielder showed exactly why he Klopp put his faith in him last season. Milner was superb, constantly making tackles and trying to get the ball forward as much as possible. He even picked up an assist for his troubles as well!

4 – Wijnaldum’s run carries on

Following his more than impressive strike on Saturday, Netherlands international Georginio Wijnaldum extended his run of only scoring in home league games. This is now the 18th time the midfielder has scored in the Premier League, with not a single one of them coming away from home. He sure likes playing at home that kid! Should this run carry on, it would surely make sense for Klopp to only start the player in home games, and go for a more defensive option on the road.

5 – Terrier’s terrible in attack

On Saturday, David Wagner’s side failed to register a single shot on target, with the away side only being able to muster up a measly one shot in total throughout the entire 90 minutes. Despite sitting pretty in 13th place, the Terriers have only scored seven league goals so far this season, with three of those coming against bottom of the league Crystal Palace on the opening day. They’ve been fairly poor in front of goal so far this season to say the least, and it definitely looked like it on the weekend. Should their poor run in front of goal continue, it wouldn’t surprise us to see the newly promoted side head back to the Championship at the first time of asking.
