Everton have been handed a 10-points deduction for breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

The punishment from the Premier League has sent Everton to the relegation zone, they have moved to second bottom in the league table with just 4 points now.

This is the biggest point deduction punishment given in Premier League’s history. Everton have denied any wrongdoing and plan to appeal the decision.

The Premier League club could now be sued by Leeds United, Leicester City and Burnley. All these clubs have written to the Everton owners and warned them before that they could sue them. All these clubs faced relegation from the Premier League while Everton survived in their place.

An independent commission audited Everton’s financial records for the 2021-22 season and found the Premier League club have breached the rules. Under Premier League rules, clubs are allowed to lose a maximum of £105m over a period of three years. Clubs who break this rule can be fined or deducted points by the Premier League.

Everton believe they have been transparent in their dealings with the Premier League and this was not considered by the independent commission.

A statement from the Premier League read: “An independent Commission has imposed an immediate deduction of 10 points on Everton FC for a breach of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs).

“The Premier League issued a complaint against the club and referred the case to an independent commission earlier this year. During the proceedings, the club admitted it was in breach of the PSRs for the period ending Season 2021/22 but the extent of the breach remained in dispute.

“Following a five-day hearing last month, the commission determined that Everton FC’s PSR calculation for the relevant period resulted in a loss of £124.5million, as contended by the Premier League, which exceeded the threshold of £105million permitted under the PSRs. The commission concluded that a sporting sanction in the form of a 10-point deduction should be imposed. That sanction has immediate effect.”

Everton have released this statement:

“Everton Football Club is both shocked and disappointed by the ruling of the Premier League’s commission.

“The Club believes that the commission has imposed a wholly disproportionate and unjust sporting sanction. The club has already communicated its intention to appeal the decision to the Premier League.

“Everton maintains that it has been open and transparent in the information it has provided to the Premier League and that it has always respected the integrity of the process. The club does not recognise the finding that it failed to act with the utmost good faith and it does not understand this to have been an allegation made by the Premier League during the course of proceedings.

Both the harshness and severity of the sanction imposed by the Commission are neither a fair nor a reasonable reflection of the evidence submitted.

“The club will also monitor with great interest the decisions made in any other cases concerning the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules. Everton cannot comment on this matter any further until the appeal process has concluded.”

Sean Dyche has overseen his second win in his third game in charge of Everton.

This afternoon was a must-win clash for the Toffees as they took on manager-less Leeds United, who are also fighting for survival in the Premier League.

Dyche picked up a triumphant 1-0 last week against league leaders Arsenal in his first match in the dugout but suffered a 2-0 loss in the Merseyside derby this week.

However, his side offered an instant response today against the Whites; club captain Seamus Coleman’s 64th minute goal was enough to secure a win at Goodison Park and move the Blues out of the bottom three. They now sit 16th placed on 21 points, whilst Leeds have moved to 19th on 19 points.

Next up for the Toffees

Next up for Dyche is another home outing against Aston Villa on Saturday, February 25 before taking on the Gunners again in the reverse fixture at the Emirates on March 1.

Everton’s Jordan Pickford used a water bottle last night at Anfield that was covered in notes to form a Liverpool “cheat sheet”.

The goalkeeper had prepared for any spot-kick by revising each of Liverpool’s potential taker’s usual tricks. The notes displayed diagrams detailing Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, James Milner and Cody Gakpo’s previous penalty history, including their run-ups and latest attempts.

It also showed where the players had sent their shots and whether or not they had been successful or on target.

Pickford was advised to “check the run-up” if it was the Egyptian, who went on to score the opening goal, or James Milner stepping up. The note also told him to “wait right” if Nunez was standing over the ball and “GK left” for the second goalscorer of the night, Gakpo.

Next up for Liverpool

Liverpool’s 2-0 win was crucial to their season and it was their first victory of 2023. Next up is another challenge though, as they travel to St James’ Park to face an in-form Newcastle United.

West Ham and Everton will have to wait until the summer to move for Sheraldo Becker with Union Berlin refusing to allow a January exit amid their ongoing search for Champions League football.

The Budesliga-based outfit currently finds itself second in the German top-flight – rather remarkably only a single point behind Julian Nagelsmann’s Bayern Munich at the top of the table.

Both West Ham and Everton are interested in Sheraldo Becker. We’ve just had it confirmed that Union received a concrete offer on Monday, though it’s not immediately clear which of the two submitted it,” Christian Falk exclusively informed CaughtOffside.

“Union, however, now have a chance to potentially secure Champions League football next year and they’re still in the cup, so that’s why they were reluctant to sell Sheraldo.

“But in the summer they know they could lose him. He’s got a contract that runs until 2025. I could imagine seeing him switch to the Premier League in the summer.”

Whilst few fans will likely be seriously dreaming of a first title for Union in their entire history, there’s a very real prospect of the side securing top European football for the 2023/24 campaign if they can stay true to their current course.

That will, of course, be reliant on Urs Fischer’s retaining their top-performing talents, as they have done with Becker who’s managed to accumulate 15 goal contributions in 27 games (across all competitions) so far this season.

Given the club lost former hitman Taiwo Awoniyi in the summer to Nottingham Forest, their path to the top four is certainly all the more sensational.

Should the Suriname international keep up his stellar form through to the end of the campaign and secure Union Champions League football, one can imagine interest in his services may extend beyond the likes of West Ham and Everton.

Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher has reportedly told the club he would prefer a move to Newcastle United over Everton after the Toffees tabled a £40 million bid.

Gallagher was seemingly on top of Sean Dyche’s transfer list and the first order of business today at Finch Farm was an approach to try and sign the 22-year-old.

However, Newcastle reporter Craig Hope of The Mail has stated that Gallagher would rather join the Magpies over Everton if he was to leave the Blues this month.

Deadline day could be key to Gallagher’s Chelsea future

The England international is a graduate of Cobham academy and has been keen to cement in place in the starting eleven under Graham Potter, however, he may fall further down the pecking order if the club can oversee the signing of World Cup starlet Enzo Fernandez from Benfica.

The two clubs are in talks and Todd Boehly is adamant about bringing the Argentine to London this winter. If it happens, Gallagher may be heading out the door to make way for Fernandez.

Anthony Gordon has completed a move to Newcastle United from his boyhood club Everton.

The 21-year-old has signed for a fee of £40 million plus £5 million in add-ons.

Prior to making the switch from Merseyside to Tyneside, Gordon had handed in a transfer request to force the board’s hand into overseeing his exit.

The Liverpool-born attacker is a graduate of Everton’s academy. He made 78 appearances in total for the Toffees and scored seven goals throughout that time.

From relegation scrap to top-four fight

He leaves the club in 19th place to join the third-placed Magpies, who are enjoying an outstanding first half of the campaign and are on track to achieve European football. They also have one foot in the final of the Carabao Cup, after winning the first leg of their semi-final 1-0.

The Blues are on the back of sacking Frank Lampard, with Sean Dyche the rumoured replacement. He faces the task of keeping the team in the top flight this season.

Both Everton and West Ham United have missed out on the signing of sought-after striker Ben Brereton-Diaz.

Journalist Alan Nixon had previously reported (via his Patreon) that both Everton and West Ham were in the race for Blackburn Rovers forward Brereton-Diaz, along with the likes of Leeds United, Sevilla and Nice.

Blackburn had set an asking price of £15 million for the 23-year-old, which was considerably higher than the interested clubs were expecting, as the player’s contract expires in the summer.

Brereton-Diaz snubs Premier League for Spain

The Premier League sides, namely the Toffees and the Irons, had set their sights on the goalscorer in a bid to boost their chances of survival this season. However, the Chile international has seemingly snubbed the chance to play in the top flight and has instead opted for a switch to the La Liga.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Brereton-Diaz will join Villareal in the summer as a free agent. The deal is “sealed and completed”.

Newcastle United are lining up a January move for Everton’s Anthony Gordon.

According to reporter Alan Myers, the 21-year-old will return to Finch Farm and resume training today after missing two sessions with the squad ahead of a reported departure.

The Magpies are seemingly the only team in the race for the forward and are willing to pay a fee of £40 million.

Gordon is an academy graduate at Everton and will likely tarnish his reputation with fans if he leaves his boyhood club during their fight for survival to remain in the top flight.

Gordon not forcing move but keen on exit

Whilst he has currently not handed in a transfer request, his absence from training and the speculation shows that he has already made up his mind over his future as a blue. The Toffees will then have less than a week to identify and agree a deal for a replacement, alongside the board’s current manager search.

Former Burnley boss Sean Dyche is emerging as the favourite for the Everton job following Frank Lampard’s sacking.

That is according to The Mirror, which confirmed that Dyche is the current front-runner over the likes of Marcelo Bielsa, who reportedly has “serious reservations” about heading into the role.

Dyche is keen on making a return to the Premier League but will face the daunting task of keeping the Toffees in the top flight after their dismal start to the 2022/2023 campaign.

New manager has mountain to climb with Toffees

They sit in 19th place and the dressing room appears far from inspired, with academy graduate Anthony Gordon so keen on a move that he has missed the last two training sessions. Newcastle United are interested in signing the 21-year-old and they could be willing to pay a fee of around £40 million.

Former Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl is also being lined up, as well as West Bromwich Albion’s Carlos Corberan. The club are expecting to have made a decision by the end of the day (January 26).
