Having played in 11 domestic games this season, Downes, 24, is enjoying a fine campaign and has massively contributed to the Saints’ fourth-placed league position.

And it has now been claimed the 24-year-old is back in with a chance of reviving his career with the Hammers.

Although unlikely to recall the midfielder in the January window, Claret and Hugh believe a surprise return to Moyes’ first-team plans could be on the cards ahead of next season.

A source close to West Ham United chief David Sullivan has reportedly claimed that Flynn Downes will return to the club from his loan spell at Southampton.

Although Downes hasn’t seen much playing time for the Hammers, it seems he remains part of the first-team picture, and his loan to the St Mary’s Stadium is not necessarily paving the way for him to leave permanently.

Downes has impressed during his time with Southampton so far, so West Ham fans will no doubt be keen to see the 24-year-old returning to the London Stadium soon enough.

Transfer insider Dean Jones has provided the latest on the future of Southampton duo Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Flynn Downes.

Southampton were relegated last season and are currently fourth in the Championship, fighting hard to win promotion back to the Premier League.

The club understands that it will be difficult to attract top players as well as keep hold of the existing ones if they do not regain promotion.

Two players who have been putting in decent performances are Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Flynn Downes. Both of them are currently on loan deals and will eventually return to their respective clubs when the season is over.

But as per Jones, the club wants both of them to become part of the club permanently.

The journalist adds that they are both players who are the kind of profile that the Saints are looking to build with now. Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones said:

“Yeah, I think from a player’s point of view, they won’t be too focused on outside influences affecting player contracts and stuff.

But in terms of the way the club is run and how they want to set up for the future, they want Harwood-Bellis and Downes to become part of the furniture.

And if that means that they need to win promotion, then they’ll understand that there is an external pressure that comes as a result of it.

So they are both players that are really good types for what Southampton are trying to build right now. And I still think that there is a good chance that they’ll be around beyond this season.”

Things have been going well for David Moyes and his West Ham side this season, and the Scot can be pleased with the business that the club did over the summer in order for him to continue with the good form that the team were showing towards the back end of 2022/23.

Not being backed in the transfer market could’ve seen the Hammers regress as they’ve done so many times in the past, so a handful of studious and well thought out buys has them in amongst the chasing pack at present and looking lively.

Of course, not every player from last season will have made the squad for the current campaign, including those unlikely to be utilised or needing to be sold or loaned in order to balance out the squad and the books.

Declan Rice had seemingly made a decision to leave in the wake of West Ham’s epic Europa Conference League title win over Fiorentina, with Flynn Downes, who might have been expected to be given a chance in the position, shipped out on loan to Southampton.

It’s a move that has, so far, worked perfectly for the Saints and the player himself. Ultimately, it could also be to the east Londoners’ benefit.

“In transition (against Stoke), we were really good. Flynn was monstrous today and it has been the Flynn we know in the last two games. He’s been outstanding,” Southampton manager, Russell Martin, was quoted as saying by the Daily ECHO.

If his good form continues, he’ll be giving Moyes the headache of the best kind, unless the Premier League outfit have already made up their mind that Downes is surplus to requirements.

West Ham United could try and sign another midfielder during the January transfer window and David Moyes has his eye on Celta Vigo’s Fran Beltran.

The Hammers brought Edson Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse to the London Stadium this summer as Moyes set about trying to replace Declan Rice who departed for Arsenal.

Beltran would see that midfield strengthened even further, being a Spanish international, but it would not be good news for one West Ham star.

Flynn Downes is currently on loan with Southampton and already faces an uphill task to cement a place at West Ham. The signing of Beltran would certainly end any hope of the 24-year-old making into Moyes’ best 11.

It is uncertain where the midfielder would go should he leave the London club or if he would be willing to stay and fight with the competition for a spot at the London Stadium.

According to reports, the 24-year-old is a target for the Championship club, who have been keeping tabs on him since May.

Downes needs regular game time at this stage of his career and he might not get that at West Ham. A move to Southampton would be ideal for him and he would get to play regularly.

Meanwhile, West Ham are closing in on a deal to sign James Ward-Prowse from Southampton. The 28-year-old will want to return to the top flight immediately and a move to West Ham would be ideal for him. The Hammers will compete in the UEFA Europa League next season and Ward-Prowse will be able to showcase his qualities at the highest level.

And currently valued at around £10 million, the 24-year-old is set to find himself trading places with Ward-Prowse, who is set to join the Hammers in a deal worth £30 million.

Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse is a wanted man, and West Ham could have the edge in the transfer race if they offer one of their young stars in part-exchange.

David Moyes and David Sullivan need to attack the transfer market with vigour now, given that there’s only three weeks until the start of the season and the Hammers still haven’t managed to sign a single player.

For a team that’s just won the Europa Conference League and, as a result, have been granted automatic entry into the Europa League this season, that’s unforgivable.

Using the excuse of having to wait until the money from the Declan Rice deal was confirmed before entering the market clearly wasn’t the wisest choice.

Luckily for the east Londoners, Ward-Prowse is one of their targets that still remains for sale and, as The Guardian (subscription required) report, the set-piece specialist is keen on the move to the London Stadium.

The Hammers could certainly do with a player of his expertise, though a more pressing need is to replace Rice, and any deal really does need to be completed as soon as practicable to enable the player to get used to his new team-mates and way of working ahead of the Premier League kick-off.

The Guardian also suggest that, in order to sweeten any potential deal, West Ham will offer highly-rated youngster, Flynn Downes, in part-exchange.

The 24-year-old hasn’t really hit the heights at the Hammers (no goals or assists in 23 appearances per WhoScored) but is likely to find his level in the Championship and could be an astute pick up for the Saints.

Ange Postecoglou kicks off his Tottenham managerial career with a test down under against London rivals West Ham United, and he’s wasted no time in handing new signing, James Maddison, his debut.

Manor Solomon and Guglielmo Vicario also make the XI with Harry Kane captaining the side despite continued speculation about his future at the club.

It’s a strong starting XI from Postecoglou, who has left enough talent in reserve on the bench to make life difficult for David Moyes’ Hammers side.

Having already played two games of their pre-season, the east Londoners could be expected to be that much sharper than the Lilywhites, however, Moyes appears to have gone for youth to start the match.

Though experienced pros like Kurt Zouma, Angelo Ogbonna, Jarrod Bowen and Danny Ings make the XI, Divin Mubama, Flynn Downes, Freddie Potts and Levi Laing also start.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is that Moyes has kept Gianluca Scamacca on the bench. Unless there’s a real chance of the player moving to Roma and the manager doesn’t want to risk him being injured, there’s no real reason for the Italian to not start in this one.

It promises to be an intoxicating London derby and whilst there’s nothing to play for other than personal pride, the narratives behind this game give it some interest over and above the usual pre-season friendly feel.

24-year-old midfielder hints he will play for West Ham next season

Flynn Downes appears to have hinted he will be playing for West Ham United for the 2023/24 campaign.

The 24-year-old didn’t feature much last season following a move from Swansea City, and that led to some speculation over his future this summer.

Downes has shown some promise in pre-season so far, and, speaking after the game against Boreham Wood last night, he seemed to drop a hint about staying at the club.

“I think, last year, we didn’t have the best start to the season. I felt like it was always a little bit of an uphill battle and you can’t do that in the Premier League,” he said.
