There’s just over a month until the January transfer window opens for business, and West Ham United need to bring in a quality front man as soon as practicable.

The Irons have spread the goals around this season but it’s noticeable that their strikers haven’t been at the races where finding the net in 2023/24 is concerned.

David Moyes appeared to try once before to just go with what he had, rather than spending money for the sake of it and, as luck would have it, he seemed to get away with it. Not anymore.

If the Scot wants the Hammers up towards the top of the Premier League and challenging for honours, then a striker purchase in January is an absolutely necessity.

Not just any striker either, but one who is a guarantee of goals.

Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke might not be a household name as such, but he does have seven goals and one assist in 13 games in all competitions this season, per WhoScored, which is an impressive return in a team that’s struggling badly under Andoni Iraola.

You’d imagine that the Cherries would fight tooth and nail to keep a player with that sort of output, but it seems as though they won’t have to.

As Sky Sports report, Iraola has been quoted as saying that “he’s happy here,” in relation to the question from a reporter to the Bournemouth manager about Solanke’s links with West Ham.

That’s sure to disappoint the east Londoners who’ll likely have to look elsewhere for their new front man.

The Premier League could reportedly be close to its first sacking of the season, with Andoni Iraola struggling at Bournemouth.

The Spanish tactician took charge of the Cherries during the summer, but things haven’t gone to plan for him as his team sit in 19th place in the table without a single win on the board so far this season.

Bournemouth only narrowly survived in the Premier League last season, and will have hoped to build on that with some improved displays this term.

Iraola looked like he could be the ideal man to take them forward, but it now seems his job is increasingly in danger, according to a report from the Daily Mail.

Bournemouth may feel this season can still be salvaged if they make the right change soon enough, so it’s not looking good for Iraola right now.

The 41-year-old previously did impressive work at Rayo Vallecano, but the Premier League is a whole different ball game and it seems to be proving too much of a step up for him at this stage in his coaching career.

David Moyes and his West Ham side will be kicking themselves that they couldn’t keep hold of their lead at Bournemouth, Dominic Solanke earning the hosts a point with a late equaliser.

Jarrod Bowen gave the Hammers a second-half lead with a stunning strike, and the visitors were well on top at that point.

However, soon after they sat back and invited pressure from the Cherries. Solanke made that pressure count with a simple finish 10 minutes from the end.

Although Bournemouth are unlikely to be expected to shock the Premier League next season, as they showed against Arsenal and other sides in 2022/23, when they’re on song, the Cherries aren’t to be taken lightly.

After ensuring their stay in the English top-flight for another season, it was an odd decision to fire manager, Gary O’Neil, given that he’d got the team playing well, securing results and ultimately their safety.

In any event, Andoni Iraola was eventually appointed in his stead, perhaps a left-field choice for many but a manager in La Liga with some great ideas, tactical nous and the ability to get the very best out of his players in each game.

When speaking with Sam Matterface and Alex Crook on their talkSPORT radio show, Iraola identified that the way he will be playing is with a much higher line than the south coast side have been used to, and with a style that will see his side putting consistent pressure on in the opposition half.

Coming from Spain it goes without saying that he will expect his players to be comfortable on the ball, and not all of those players from last season are likely to make the cut for 2023/24.

Indeed, Iraola admitted that he ideally wants to sign at least five or six players in this summer’s transfer window in order to pad out his squad with the strength in depth needed for a successful campaign.

Leeds United have recently appointed Javi Gracia as their new manager and the Spaniard will be expected to guide them to safety this season.

The Whites are currently fighting the relegation battle and the club hierarchy decided to part ways with Jesse Marsch after a series of poor performances.

Former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson has now revealed MOT Leeds News that Leeds were set to appoint Andoni Iraola as their new manager but they struggled to get him out of Rayo Vallecano in the end.

Robinson added that Leeds would have had a better chance of landing Iraola if they had sacked Marsch earlier.

However, Iraola has produced a series of impressive results at the Spanish club and Rayo Vallecano demanded a premium for his services.

“I don’t think they had a backup plan beyond the Rayo Vallecano manager. From what I’m led to believe that’s the direction they wanted to go in and that was all done.

“He’s had such a good season and results at Vallecano it was hard to get him out of the club. The price to get him out of the club had changed.”

Leeds had to pull out of the deal eventually and they have appointed the former Watford manager Javi Gracia as their new manager. It remains to be seen whether the Spaniard can turn things around at Elland Road and guide the club to safety.

Inside Spain is a weekly instalment brought to you by Football España, providing an insight into all of the major stories coming out of the rich and intense climes of La Liga and beyond.

There was plenty of good football in Spain this week, but you’d have barely heard about that due the several incidents of hysteria. All of the top seven sides in La Liga played teams from 10th down last weekend, only Barcelona and Athletic Club would win. Aside from Real Madrid, the biggest shock was Elche beating Villarreal – gaining their first win in 20 attempts this season.

Los Blancos for their part, fell to an ugly and costly defeat to Real Mallorca. Marco Asensio missed a penalty, Nacho Fernandez scored past his own ‘keeper, and leaft them on the ropes in the La Liga title race, trailing Barcelona by a sizable eight points. That was barely the biggest story, as Vinicius Junior was brought down repeatedly. It took a matter of minutes after the final whistle for the Madrid media to highlight that not only has Vinicius been fouled more times already this season than last, but he is by far the most fouled player in Europe. Running parallel, he once again suffered from racial abuse, a depressing fourth incident this season. The noise surrounding the Brazilian is at fever pitch, with Spain split down the middle on him.

Rayo Vallecano coach Andoni Iraola is a rising star.

Back in the Spanish capital, Leeds United Sporting Director Victor Orta came to Madrid to replace Jesse Marsch, but went straight back without managing to do so. Raul Gonzalez, mounting a promotion push with Real Madrid’s B team (Castilla), turned down an approach, before Andoni Iraola of Rayo Vallecano did. Despite reports from SkySports in the United Kingdom saying that Rayo blocked a move, they could quite easily have unblocked it themselves if they just paid his €10m release clause.

Iraola is one of the rising stars in Spanish management, arguably doing the best job of any coach in Spain. With his contract up in four months, he could well be in the Premier League sooner rather than later though. Find out why he is likely to have a number of teams buzzing his phone in June here.

It was relatively tranquil in Barcelona until midway through the week, when Matias Messi, brother of little known Lionel, placed dynamite on the tracks. His statements on Twitch have since been followed by an apology, but the damage from his scathing attack, also ruling out a Barcelona return for Lionel Messi, was well and truly done.

On the pitch at least, things are as smooth as they have been, with Barcelona cruising into an eight-point lead with their 3-0 victory over Sevilla. The big questions in Catalonia are over the summer. President Joan Laporta says they are close to being able to act normally and without restrictions in the summer transfer window. That would allow them to register the players signing new contracts, and perhaps retain Ansu Fati – most recently linked with Manchester United.
