Since joining Liverpool last summer, football has not been very kind to Calvin Ramsay as the defender has been plagued with injury issues over the last few months. 

The right-back arrived from Aberdeen with undiagnosed back issues and things have not improved on the injury front since. The youngster has not played a competitive game at senior level since his first start for Liverpool, which came in the win over Derby in the League Cup back in November.

Ramsay required surgery on a serious knee injury in February, which ended his maiden campaign at Anfield early. The Reds decided it would be best to loan out the Scottish star for the current campaign and the player is now at Preston where he is yet to play. The right-back suffered an injury prior to the start of the season with manager Ryan Lowe explaining last month that he could be facing “six to eight weeks” out.

That injury is now believed to be worse than expected as Preston boss Lowe told reporters on Thursday that Ramsay will ‘probably be out for another couple of months,’ as quoted by This is Anfield.

The defender has now returned to Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre for rehabilitation, which loanees with long-term injuries typically do to help their recovery. This will be another blow to the youngster as the main reason for being loaned out was to gain valuable game time at a senior level.

Liverpool right-back Calvin Ramsay has agreed to join Championship side Preston North End on a season-long loan after Jurgen Klopp believes it would be best for his development. 

The 19-year-old joined Liverpool last summer from Aberdeen in a deal worth £4.2m, but the Scotland international only made two appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side during an injury-ravaged first season at Anfield.

According to The Athletic, the Liverpool boss made the decision to let the youngster go as he believes a loan would be best for Ramsay’s development with the German coach keen to ensure the youngster gets regular first-team action after missing so much football.

Ramsay remains part of Klopp’s long-term plans and will be given more chances upon his return in the summer of 2024.

This leaves Liverpool with just Trent Alexander-Arnold as their only natural right-back and it could mean that the Reds try and sign one during the summer transfer window.

Joe Gomez has the ability to play the role but with Klopp using Alexander-Arnold as an inverted midfielder throughout the end of this season, will a player with a profile that can do that more naturally be signed to back up the England international?

Regular game time will be necessary for Ramsay to develop into the player Liverpool want him to be, so keeping him at the club doesn’t make an awful lot of sense.

However, Alexander-Arnold has struggled at times this season, so maybe Klopp is planning on utilising Ramsay more in the second-half of the season.

Liverpool have reportedly agreed a deal to sign 18-year-old right-back Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen.

Ramsay was recently named Scottish Football Writers’ Association Young Player of the Year, after he registered nine assists for Aberdeen, playing 33 times.

The highly-rated defender is set to become Liverpool’s third and final signing, according to Paul Joyce from The Times. The fee is believed to be in the region of £4.5m, increasing to £7m if add-ons are met.

As Joyce confirmed, Ramsay is likely to be Liverpool’s final signing, and the Merseyside club will prioritise a midfielder in the 2023 summer transfer window. Ramsay was closely coveted by David Moyes but Liverpool is appeared to have won the battle for his services.
