Leeds United could reportedly let as many as six players go this January as a number of their squad want out of Elland Road.

Leeds Live journalist Beren Cross has looked into the current situation at the club, with manager Daniel Farke perhaps set to clear out as many as six players this winter.

According to Cross, Joe Gelhardt, Kristoffer Klaesson, Mateo Joseph, Lewis Bate, Leo Hjelde and Darko Gyabi are all players who could be heading for the exit door at Leeds.

Leeds have a lot of competition for places in their current squad after a busy summer, and it’s clear that there are now plenty of players who will have to move elsewhere in order to play regular first-team football.

As the end of the transfer window approaches, Leeds United could still be one of the more active clubs in the marketplace.

After having lost so many players already and Willy Gnonto seemingly refusing to play for the club again unless he gets a move away, Daniel Farke needs things to settle down quickly.

The last thing the German needs is more upheaval than is necessary, particularly if it impacts his preferred starting XI after the season has already begun.

Sam Byram might well have something to say about that, however.

The left-back came on for Leo Hjelde in Leeds’ opening couple of games of the campaign, and started the last match against Birmingham City.

Fifty-eight appearances over the last four seasons per transfermarkt hint at Byram’s injury record, but being brought in ahead of Hjelde, who is interesting Salernitana according to Calicomercato, could see the 19-year-old being eased out of the club before transfer deadline day.

There could be push back from Farke who needs strength in depth, and Junior Firpo, the other left-back at the club, is injured at present, but the manager has to take into account that he doesn’t want a disruptive or unhappy player in his dressing room.

With just over a couple of weeks to go until the transfer window closes, a decision needs to be made soon for the benefit of all parties.

It never rains but it pours for Daniel Farke and Leeds United at present, with yet another obstacle placed in the manager’s way at the start of this 2023/24 Championship season.

Farke has had more than enough to deal with since he took over the reins at the club, not least striker Willy Gnonto effectively going on strike to try and force through a move to Premier League side, Everton.

A number of players have also left the club and there’s still time for more to go given that there’s over two weeks left of the current transfer window.

One player that is looking to ply his trade elsewhere is Leo Hjelde, with reliable journalist, Gianluca di Marzio, reporting that a switch to Salernitana is on the cards.

He might well have played his last game for the all whites, but that’s nothing to do with his transfer situation.

According to Yahoo, as the player suffered a concussion in Leeds’ training session on Tuesday, per English Football League protocols, he will be forced to sit out the match against West Bromwich Albion.

Given that their fixture the week after, and right on top of the end of the transfer window, is against table-topping Ipswich Town, Farke is highly unlikely to risk the player incase of injury and a move collapsing.

Truth be told, the German needs as many players on board that he can, but with Hjelde believed to be angling for the move, it’s senseless keeping an unhappy player.

Things still haven’t really settled down for Daniel Farke at Leeds United, with the German having to deal with all manner of issues at the club.

Willy Gnonto has effectively gone on strike in order to try and force through a move to Everton or any other interested Premier League party, whilst Tyler Adams could also be on the move.

With a number of departures just before or just after Farke arrived in Elland Road hot-seat, the manager has barely had the time to get his starting XI bedded down, and it seems that there could be yet another departure on the cards.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, although he’s played two games for Leeds already in 2023/24, Leo Hjelde is on the verge of agreeing a switch to Salernitana.

It would mean yet more upheaval for Farke and it’s surely incumbent upon new owners, 49ers Enterprises, to back him in the transfer market before it closes in just under three weeks time.

If they either unable or unwilling to do so to any great degree, it really does put the German at a disadvantage from the get-go.

Though it wouldn’t make his position untenable as such, it places untold pressure on Farke to deliver whilst having one arm tied behind his back for want of a better phrase.

There’s still plenty of time for Leeds United to refine their playing squad as, even though the new Championship season begins in a week’s time, the transfer window doesn’t shut for a few weeks yet.

Daniel Farke has been working his squad hard in training ready for the big kick-off, and the all whites have to be considered as one of the favourites to go straight back up.

The squad has really taken shape in the last two weeks, with those players that are considered surplus to requirements or simply don’t want to be at the club any longer being moved on.

Having a divisive presence in the dressing room at any time is bad for team morale, though as a new manager looking to make an impression, the last thing Farke will need is players in the team that either don’t subscribe to his methods or aren’t interested in what the club has to offer.

According to Tutto Salernitana, 6ft 2in Leo Hjelde is Serie A side Salernitana’s main transfer target this summer, and it’s believed that the Elland Road outfit won’t stand in the player’s way if he decides that the move is for him.

Leeds had wanted €2m for the player but after the Italians made it clear that was too much, the report states Leeds are ‘willing to take a small step back’ and accept a loan move with an obligation to buy, as well as a percentage of any future sell-on fee.

It’s only been a couple of weeks since Daniel Farke took over as first-team manager at Leeds United, but one player has already been complaining about his methods.

As so often happens when someone new comes in to shake things up a bit, noses are put out of joint, egos are jolted and the dynamic shifts.

From Leeds’ players point of view, they’ll understand that Farke’s methods have worked at previous clubs so, like it or not, until new owners, 49ers Enterprises, say otherwise, they’ll just have to get on with it.

Farke will have known that he was walking into a club with a real challenge on his hands.

Leeds are a massive club and though no one ‘deserves’ to be in the top-flight purely on that basis, the English top-flight is the all whites rightful home.

That’s the pressure facing the new manager as he tries to work out ways in which he can give his team the edge.

It sounds like he does have most players on side already despite their reservations about certain aspects of training.

“Very tough (training), I can say that. But it’s been very good,” Leo Hjelde said to Leeds Live.

“He (Farke) likes to play possession-based. He knows what he’s doing. It’s just been a week, just trying to implement it. We’ve done too much running for my liking, but that’s how it is.”

With it often said that the Championship is one of the hardest leagues to get out of, Farke has to ensure that his players can run harder and for longer than their opponents as a basic requirement.

Hjelde and his colleagues will almost certainly see the benefits in due course.

Although a new manager is still to be announced by Leeds United, that doesn’t appear to be stopping the new owners from conducting any transfer business.

It isn’t clear at this stage just how much work can be done without a new director of football/sporting director and first-team manager in place, but 49ers Enterprises are at least trying to get ahead of the curve and save money where possible.

Relegation to the Championship was arguably not in anyone’s thinking last season, but the drop down into English football’s second tier is a fact now, and one that the club need to adjust to accordingly.

If that means selling players who may or may not be considered surplus to requirements, those are some of the difficult decisions that 49ers Enterprises will have to make.

Supporters can’t really lay the blame at the new owners door either. They will likely just be attending to whatever business they can to ensure that Leeds are successful and have the best chance of coming straight back up.

If fingers need to be pointed, they should be at former owner, Andrea Radrizzani, who seemed to make bad decision after bad decision during the 2022/23 campaign.

In any event, one player that could be about to leave the club and save some money on the club wage bill is 19-year-old defender, Leo Hjelde.

According to Tutto Salernitana, if the right offer came in for a player who appears to be attracting a lot of attention, Leeds are unlikely to stand in his way.

The centre-back has most recently been on loan at Rotherham and played only two games for Leeds in two seasons per WhoScored, so a move away is likely to suit all parties.

According to recent reports, Leeds United’s promising centre-back, Leo Hjelde, is said to be engaged in discussions with Serie A outfit Salernitana regarding a prospective permanent transfer to the Italian club.

The 19-year-old Norwegian defender, who joined Leeds from Celtic in January 2021, has shown great potential during his time with the English side.

Hjelde’s potential move to Salernitana could offer him an opportunity to further develop his skills and gain valuable first-team experience in one of Europe’s top leagues though. While the specific details of the negotiations remain undisclosed, it is evident that Salernitana sees Hjelde as a valuable addition to their defensive lineup.

This potential move to Serie A would mark an important milestone in Hjelde’s career, allowing him to showcase his abilities in a different footballing environment. It would also underline the growing reputation of Leeds United’s youth development system, which has been successful in nurturing and producing talented players in recent years.

Leeds United have made progress in their bid to complete their next signing of the summer.

Celtic defender Leo Hjelde has emerged as a target this summer, but up to this point, the Whites had come up against a brick wall in their attempts.

But according to a fresh report from the Yorkshire Evening Post, there has been progress in negotiations between Leeds and Celtic.

The two clubs were stuck in a deadlock for some time, but there now seems to be movement, meaning the Whites are at least a little closer to landing Hjelde.

Fortunately, Leeds aren’t in any real rush given Hjelde is only 17 and very much a signing for the future, the Norwegian yet to make a senior appearance for Celtic.

Marcelo Bielsa clearly means business in 2021/22

But the Yorkshire club will want to wrap things up by the end of the transfer window, which closes at the end of this month.

And with that in mind, the progress is significant, and there will be hope an agreement can be reached in the coming weeks.
